  • The purpose of this study is to analyze STS contents in the elementary school science textbooks developed under the 7th national curriculum. Major findings from the analyses are as follows: (1) The Percentage of STS contents included is 26% by the number of pages, and 40% by the lesson hour, Higher proportions of the STS contents are found in the domains of ‘energy’ and ‘material’. By grade level, the coverage of 5th grade textbooks is relatively low. (2) Most STS topics are related to science rather than technology or society. (3) In many cases, STS contents are used in the whole processes of a lesson. (4) Most activities are 'group activity' or 'experiment.observation'. There are few activities of 'role playing', 'spot study' or 'interview'. These results indicate that recent STS education trends are reflected on the revised textbooks well. However, it is suggested that some improvement is needed, such as diversification of topic or activity.

  • This study investigated six teachers who used the lessons utilizing geospatial technologies including GPS and Google Earth. The lessons were designed to ask students to solve problems with the technologies rather than to teach students to just use technology and teachers to function more as a facilitator. Key findings include: (1) The teachers with background and interest in learner-centered teaching were more effective in implementing the lessons with their students while the teachers who were familiar with teacher-centered instruction often reduced learners' roles in the lesson; (2) Generally, students expressed huge interests in the lessons. Changes in attitude and participation toward lessons were more clearly observed from low achievers and passive learners; (3) Key influencing factors in adoption of lessons utilizing geospatial technologies were school culture toward innovativeness, characteristics of school administrators, learning experience of the lessons during the workshops, and support systems for lesson preparation and implementation.

  • This study is to design and implement the synthetic courseware that covers repeating learning, individual teaching, and effective teaching-learning games by using multimedia authoring tool KAS for numerical data of computer science which is especially a little boring and difficult to understand through blackboard-based lesson for senior high school students. It also overcomes the drawbacks of the existing CAI focused on text and image by combining various kinds of media like image, animation and sound effects. Animation of numerical data in the fields of radix conversion makes it possible for learners to check the individual learning process and visual interest. So it comes to increase the effectiveness of learning. Whenever each chapter is finished. learners' understanding can be evaluated by formative test. Applicability test of the developed CAI in Eumsung Senior High School. is statistically evaluated as more effective than that of the blackboard-based lesson.

  • The objective of this research was to study the impact of metacognitive lesson models on the formation of magnetic field concepts. The subjects of this research was eighty students from two sixth grade classes. One class of forty of these students was the experimental group, which the metacognitive strategic lesson model was applied, and the other class of forty students was the control group which the traditional lessons were conducted. As the result of the experiment, the experimental group and the control group, which previously did not show difference in terms of achievement of conceptualizing magnetic field, displayed a significant difference. According to the comparison between the pre-experiment test on the students' previous concepts and the achievement of the students after the experiment, the middle group showed difference between the experimental group and the control group in a small degree. The lower group showed a notable difference between the two groups and the higher group showed no difference. In terms of achievements shown in different questions asked, there was little difference in the questions that were stated in the textbook while there was a significant difference in the questions that applied the contents of the textbook. The higher academic group, according to the test on the previous concepts, did not show much difference between the experimental group and the control group when they were asked about the concepts of the textbook. In terms of the comparison in the metacognitive levels, both the higher and lower metacognitive experimental groups' average grade was higher than the control groups' and showed an important statistical difference.

  • The current research was to investigate the effects of discussion activities based on Havruta style on elementary school students' social studies communication skills. For this purpose, we examined a comparative study between 5th grade students and other students of partner schools. As research results, first, online classes using video conference equipment and smart devices will enhance the students' interest and participation in class. Second, the Havruta style helps students not only acquire and internalize knowledge by themselves through the course of reciprocal questions and discussions but also improve presentations and participations. Third, it is necessary not only to draft a new lesson plan and to reconstruct the education process for video and online classes but also to develop the classes with a lesson plan after preparations and discussions with colleague teachers; the process of reflection, such as writing a lesson research journal, has a positive effect to improve the quality of cooperative classes. Fourth, using SNS discussion activities to serve as a complementary activity is good, and two teachers can evaluate each of the students' achievement. It is necessary to have a sufficient number of schools where video and online cooperative learning is possible with video equipment provided. To maximize the effect of video and online classes, various studies and teacher trainings are needed. Education office needs to provide a server that enables students in small and large classes to freely engage in cooperative learning.

  • It is a story through which people share their ideas and express their thoughts. Storytelling is temporally and spatially interconnected narration that consists of characters, background, its beginning and its conclusion. Furthermore, the story in storytelling is a means of delivering culture and history; thanks to the development of various media, delivering and exchanging the story are conducted in a variety of forms. Due to the technological advancement, the way storytelling is done has changed, which was a method called digital storytelling. This storytelling has been frequently used in education; that is, teachers utilize stories to communicate their thoughts. As receivers, students understand a shade of meaning and the role of language, thus reorganizing the important factors in the context of meaningful events. However, in practice the classes are so teacher-centered that the role of students are relegated to that of passive learners, thus debilitating the interaction between participants; as a result, this situation shows serious limitations in that it does not improve students' practical skills. Despite this situation, home economics has attempted to broaden students' practical knowledge and has enabled them to acquire procedural knowledge as its main objectives in the context of the entire life. To overcome this problem, this study attempts to demonstrate the lesson model utilizing the storytelling where the lively participation in the process and results of learning can increase learners' self-confidence and responsibility. This lesson model is believed to facilitate the communication among participants including teachers and students. Through this alternative teaching method, learners can participate in the process of learning so that they can acquire practical knowledge: this method can be a step-stone for further development. In conclusion, the development of curriculum and lesson plans should be encouraged.

  • The object of this study is to understand the characteristics of mathematical knowledge that elementary 5th graders have regarding the statistical variation concept and the changes after taking lessons. This study includes a pretest to examine the characteristics of mathematical knowledge that elementary 5th graders have regarding the statistical variation concept. And It was followed by a lesson on statistical variation concept to be able to correct error which was revealed by the inspection, and to improve good points. It turned out that after five lessons on the statistical variation concept, the insufficient aspects were properly improved, and as for the points they already understand, they came to understand better than before. They came to consider the statical variation concept instead of the frequency, preponderance, average, stable traits for the optimum value. Also, through the lesson on drawing tables and graphs, they came to better understand them, analyzing correctly the exercises in which tables and graphs were combined. When comparing data sets whose general distributions and extents were similar, students came up with the right answers in a stable way by considering averages combining statistical variation too. Since they tended to interpret a situation with their own subjective views adding conditions, teachers need to examine the proper situation and conditions prior to the lessons on the statistical variation concept.
