A Study of Experiences of Smoking and Smoking Cessation in out-of-school Youth (학교 밖 청소년의 흡연 및 금연 경험 연구)

  • Purpose: The aim of this qualitative study was to identify the experiences of smoking and smoking cessation in out-of-school youth. Methods: The participants were 12 out-of-school youths belonging the Youth support Center located in A and B area. The data were collected from January 8 to 15, 2018, using a FGI(Focus Group Interview). The main sub-domains of the experiences of smoking and smoking cessation in out-of-school youth by 7 questions were categorized from the intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, and community factors in ecological model. Results: The motivation, continuity, disadvantage of smoking experiences of out-of-school youth were analyzed in 10 sub-domains (curiosity, friend's invitation, mood of adapted group, habit, relieving stress, providing breaks, friendship, physical damage, loss of money, a bad sight of smoker). The reason, difficulty, advantage, reason for restarting smoking cessation experiences of out-of-school youth were analyzed in 15 sub-domains (physical damage, for future hope, invitation of others, influence of family, weight gain, emotional stress, worsening friendship, improvement physical condition, saving money, better relationships, not with bad friends, withdrawal, smoking of friends, drinking, separated a lover). Conclusion: Based on the results, it is expected that a Specialized Smoking Cessation Education Program will be developed for out-of-school youth's health activities in ecological factors.

  • This study explores how the main variables of youth going through a transition period (parents' nurturing behavior, the youth's self-esteem and ego resilience, the peer group relationships) affect the youth's school adjustment. It also analyzes the effects of theses variables on the youth's dependence on cell phones, which are considered a necessity in modern society. This research is verified by using a structure model verification method based on data from the Korean Children Youth Panel Study. According to the research, first, 1st-year students in middle school show better adjustment to their school life and less dependence on cell phones when they have a stronger sense of self-esteem and ego resilience; further, it is revealed that cell phone dependence has an indirect influence on the school life of these children. Second, they tend to show better adjustment to their school life and less dependence on cell phones when their parents' nurturing behaviors are more positive. Third, these children tend to depend more on cell phones when they have a positive peer group relationship, Moreover, cell phone dependence has an indirect influence on their school life. When considering the impact of cell phone to youth in modern society, need to prepare proper training program for correct uses and preventing from addiction.

Effects of Youth Voluntary Service on Sense of Citizenship, Positive Self-perception, and Peer Relation - The Comparison between Middle School and High School Students- (청소년의 자원봉사활동이 시민의식과 긍정적 자기지각 및 또래관계에 미치는 영향 - 중학생과 고등학생 간 비교 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of youth voluntary on sense of citizenship, positive self-perception, and peer relations, which procedures was conducted by being comparison between middle school students and high school ones. This study also use the data given by 2st of the Seoul Education Longitudinal Study(SELS), which subjects were 7,593 youths(3,566 in middles school students and 4,027 in high school ones). The most significant variable for youth's peer relations was sense of citizenship both middle school and high school student, which indicates not only that it is encouraged by sense of citizenship but also that developing and leading the sense of citizenship for youth should be given by the school welfare policy. Positive self-perception in middle school youth influenced the second effect on their peer relations, but high school student's peer relation was impacted by the voluntary service into a secondary effect.

Influence of Community Participation of Rural Students on Leadership Skill (농촌지역 학생의 지역사회참여가 리더십기술에 미치는 영향)

  • Youth leadership development is crucial domain of youth development. The study was to analyze the influences of youth community participation and organizational engagements on youth leadership development. Community participation of youth was categorized fours factors; service activity, school engagement, conversation participation and political activity. The survey was employed by rural students in Daegu and KoungBuk area. Major findings of the study were as followed; First rural students' community participation of eup-myoun area were higher than that of outside area. Second, rural students' participating community organization of eup-myoun area were higher than that of outside area. Third, youth leadership skill was positively influenced by students school engagement. The study showed that youth leadership is positively influenced by community participation of rural students. The study suggested that rural youth should encourage to participate community organization and community activities for developing youth leadership skill.

The Effect of Youth Activity by Aspects of Individual, Family, and School Life on Youths -Focusing on Mediated Effects of Self-Esteem - (청소년활동이 청소년의 개인, 가족, 학교측면 결과에 미치는 영향 - 자아존중감의 매개효과를 중심으로-)

  • This study aims to explore the effect of youth activity on aspects of individual, family, and school life on youths. Also, this study verifies the consideration of self-esteem as a mediated variable in reporting the effectiveness of youth activities. For the purpose, this study collected data from 1,088 high school and junior high school students in Jeollabuk-do, and performed a final data analysis from 1,063 of those students. SPSS 19.0 and Amos 18.0 were used to analyze the data. As the result of study, youth activities have a positive significant effect on individual, familial, and school life for the youth involved. The results also show that youth activity experiences contribute to self-esteem completely in the youths' individual aspect, and to partially in both familial and school life as well. This study suggested direction in conjunction with the activation of youth activities by analyzing the effectiveness of youth activities from a variety of viewpoints such as individual, familial, and school life for the youths involved.

The Impact of Parental Attachment on Career Barriers for Out-of-School Youth : Focusing on the Mediating Effect of Self-esteem

  • This study examines the mediating effect of self-esteem in the path between parental attachment and career barriers for out-of-school youth and proposes measures to reduce the level of career barriers for out-of-school youth. As analysis data, we used data from the 5th year of the panel survey of school dropout youth conducted by the Korea Youth Policy Institute, and used 318 out-of-school youth for analysis. As a result of analysis using the statistical programs SPSS 23.0 and Amos 23.0 version, the mediating effect of self-esteem was confirmed in the path between emotional support, a subfactor of parental attachment, and all subfactors of career barriers. These results suggest that multifaceted efforts are needed to improve parental attachment (emotional support, economic support) and self-esteem, which influence the level of career barriers for out-of-school youth. Accordingly, based on the results of this study, practical measures were specifically presented to educate parents of out-of-school youth and improve their self-esteem.

Mediator and Moderator Effects of Academic Resilience in Relation with Academic Burnout and School Adaptation in Gifted Youth (영재 청소년의 학업소진이 학교적응에 미치는 영향에서 학업탄력성의 매개 및 조절 효과)

  • In this study, research was held on verifying mediator effects of academic resilience of gifted youth in relation between academic burnout and school adaptation. To accomplish this, academic burnout, school adaptation, and academic resilience for gifted youth were measured from the participants of 444 gifted youth who had participated in Gifted Education Center and Gifted Class. The results were analyzed by SPSS/WIN 21.0 and AMOS 21.0. A summary of the results of this study is as follows. First, it was revealed that academic resilience for gifted youth plays a role of full mediation in relation between academic burnout and school adaptation. Second, it was revealed that academic burnout and school adaptation had moderator effects in influence of academic resilience for gifted youth. Especially, school adaptation and academic burnout were observed to be negatively correlated with low group of academic resilience. Based on the results of the study, several implications and limitations were proposed for the role of academic resilience in gifted youth.

A Discussion on the Importance of Community Youth Activities and Enhancement of Youth Competence (지역사회 중심 청소년활동의 중요성과 청소년 역량강화 방안)

  • The purpose of this study were to discuss on the importance of community youth development programs and review the enhancement of competence in youth The research methods used the extensive review of related literatures. Based on the major results, the implications and suggestions were as follows. First, community youth activity will need to provide the opportunities of enhancing the competencies and a full complement of positive connections to youth programs. Second, communities promote to engage youth as partners with adults in the process of positive youth development. Third, youth development organizations operate to support the programs to prevent risky-behaviors or treat specific problems in terms of community youth contexts. Finally, collaboration and network are necessarily required among youth, adults, family, school, organizations within the community. Changes to work and workplace are so significant that policies refer to 'the knowledge society' at the same time 'information society'. Future workers will need to have the skills of information and communications management and control.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate violences of youth and to develop the prevention in community. The data were collected from 809 middle school students in Seosan city and Taean-gun and were analyzed by SPSSWIN 10.0. The statistical technique used for this study were crosstabs, ANOVA, and frequencies. The results were as following; 1) Youth has suffered from more linguistic violences than physical violences 2) Male youths have undergone linguistic violence and robberies, while female youths haves experienced stepchild, 3) Fitty percentage of youth violence was occurred by acquaintances or students in school 4) Experiences of violences were relative to peer groups. 5) Youths required that violence clubs should be dismissed for reducing school violences.

The Present Conditions of Rural Youth Welfare Facilities and Policy Measures for Development (농어촌 청소년 복지시설의 문제점과 해결 방안)

  • Rural youth welfare was defined to provide the preventive services as well as the protective and curative services such as education, job training, youth activity, delinquency prevention, etc. for rural youth who live in rural society, including who go out to metropolitan city for study. Based on this concept, the rural youth related facilities and problems were investigated in the area of education, culture and leisure, career, and problematic behavior. The results were identified that the efforts of government and rural related institutions were in sufficient to establish and improve the facilities for rural youth, and the gap between rural and urban youth facilities was extended increasingly, in spite of seriousness of those rural youth problems. Some of policies and programs were proposed in order to improve rural youth welfare; 1) To establish at least one activity facility in every Eup ; 2) To convert the public culture facilities such as museums, fine art museums, exhibition facilities, etc. into the culture and art facilities for rural youth; 3) To establish rural youth job information center in the agricultural technology and extension center; 4) To convert school to rural youth education and cultural center; 5) To establish the comprehensive welfare facilities for rural youth in metropolitan city.
