Soot particles generated by fossil fuel combustion normally have fractal morphology with aggregates consisting of small spherical particles. Thus, Rayleigh or Mie elastic light scattering theory is not feasible for determining the fractal properties of soot aggregates. This paper describes a detailed process for applying Rayleigh-Debye Gans (RDG) scattering theory to effectively extract the morphological properties of any nano-scale particles. The fractal geometry of soot aggregates produced from an isooctane diffusion flame was observed using ex situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) after thermophoretic sampling. RDG scattering theory was then used to analyze their fractal morphology, and various properties were calculated, such as the diameter of individual soot particles, number density, and volume fraction. The results show indiscernible changes during the soot growth process, but a distinct decreasing trend was observed in the soot oxidation process. The fractal dimension of the soot aggregates was determined to be around 1.82, which is in good agreement with that produced for other types of fuel. Thus, it can be concluded that the value of the fractal dimension is independent of the fuel type.
This experiment was conducted for the purpose of developing such a sensor that can quickly sense dopamine concentration by using chitosan-gold nanoshell. Chitosan nano particles were reacted with gold nano particles so as to synthesize chitosan-gold nanoshell, and the size of the synthesized product was about 150 nm. When dopamine was reacted with chitosan-gold nanoshell, the size of it was not definitely changed, but dopamine was well reacted with chitosan-gold nanoshell, and it generated SERS (surface-enhanced Raman scattering), which led to a clear difference in the intensity of Raman scattering within the range of dopamine concentration (1 mM-10 mM). When Raman scattering was intensity marked on chitosan-gold nanoshell by employing a calibration curve according to dopamine concentration, a straight line whose margin of error was narrow was earned.

The particle depolarization ratios were retrieved from the observation with a multi-wavelength Raman lidar at Gwangju, Korea ($35.11^{\circ}N$, $126.54^{\circ}E$). The measurements were carried out on 24 February and 9 March 2004. Using the particle depolarization ratios, the non-dust aerosol particles were distinguished from the Asian dust plume, and the proportion of the non-dust particle to total dust plume was retrieved. The calculated proportion of the non-dust particle was used for the retrieval of backscatter coefficients at 355, 532, and 1064 nm and extinction coefficients at 355 and 532 nm of non-dust particles in the dust plume. Microphysical parameters of non-dust particles including single-scattering albedo at 532 nm were retrieved using retrieved optical values. The retrieved single-scattering albedo of non-dust particles was 0.92~0.95 below 1 km height and 0.82~0.91 above 1 km height on 24 February 2004 and $0.81{\pm}0.03$ on 9 March 2004.

The influences of fluorescence, scattering, and flocculation in turbid material were interpreted for the scattered fluorescence intensity and wavelength, it has been studied the molecular properties by the spectroscopy of laser induced fluorescence(LIF). The effects of optical properties in scattering media have been found by the optical parameters(${\mu}_s$, ${\mu}_a$, ${\mu}_t$). Flocculation is an important step in many solid-liquid separation processes and is widely used in Photodynamic therapy. The interactions of several colloid particles can come into play which have major effect on the flocculation and LIF process. We measured scattering and fluorescence spectra of the sample for in vitro as function of concentration from lase source to detector. The value of scattering coefficient ${\mu}_s$ is large by means of the increasing particles of scatterer. Therefore, Phorphyrin A is larger than Phorphyrin C in scattering intensity ${\mu}_s$, but Phorphyrin A is smaller than Phorphyrin C in penetration depth ${\delta}$.

A novel and simple method for the synthesis of nano-magnetite particles is disclosed. In the novel procedure, $Fe^{2+}$ is the only source of metal cation. Carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) is used as the structure directing agent. The phase analysis of the nano-particles was performed using XRD and electron diffraction techniques. Size and morphology analysis was performed using light scattering and TEM techniques. The effect of $NH_4OH$ solution (32 wt. %) at different CMC concentrations on the size distribution of the final magnetite powders is studied. An optimal base concentration exists for each CMC concentration leading to minimal agglomeration. There exists a minimum CMC concentration (0.0016 wt. %), lower than that no magnetite forms. It is shown that using the new method, it is possible to immobilize a lipase enzyme (Candida Rugosa) with immobilization efficiency larger than 98 % with a loading more than 3 times the reported value in the literature. The latter phenomenon is explained based on the agglomerate state of the nano-particles in the liquid phase.
We have developed a Monte Carlo code, which solves the problem of radiative transfer in anisotropically scattering atmosphere. The radiative code is flexible in handlings of the system geometry, the distribution of scattering particles, and the source-particle geometry. This code treats the case of highly forward throwing scattering. As performance tests, we have compared the result of Monte Carlo calculations with that of Quasi-Diffusion method for a spherically symmetric cloud model.

A new technique for control of size and shape of flame-made particles is Introduced. The characteristic sintering time can be controlled Independently of collision time by heating the particles with irradiation of laser because the sintering time strongly depends on temperature. A coflow oxy-hydrogen diffusion flame burner was used for $SiCl_4$ conversion to silica particle. Nanometer sized aggregates irradiated by a high power CW $CO_2$ laser beam were rapidly heated up to high temperatures and then were sintered to approach volume-equivalent spheres. The sphere collides much slower than the aggregate, which results in reduction of sizes of particles maintaining spherical shape. Light scattering of Ar ion laser and TEM observation using a local sampling device were used to confirm the above effects. When the $CO_2$ laser was irradiated at low position from the burner surface, particle generation due to gas absorption of laser beam occurred and thus scattering intensity increased with $CO_2$ laser power. At high irradiation position, scattering intensity decreased with $CO_2$ laser power and TEM image showed a clear mark of evaporation and recondensation of particles for high $CO_2$ laser power. When the laser was irradiated between the above two positions where small aggregates exist, average size of spherical particles obviously decreased to 58% of those without $CO_2$ laser irradiation with the spherical shape. Even for increased carrier gas flow rate by a factor of three, TEM photograph also revealed considerable reduction of particle size.
Current in-situ airborne probes that measure the sizes of ice crystals smaller than 50 ㎛ are based on the concept that the measured intensity of light scattered by a particle in the forward and/or backward direction can be converted to particle size. The relationship between particle size and scattered light used in forward scattering probes is based on Mie theory, which assumes the refractive index of particle is known and all particles are spherical. Not only are small crystals not spherical, but also there are a wide variety of non-spherical shapes. Although it is well known that the scattering properties of non-spherical ice crystals differ from those of spherical shapes, the impacts of non-sphericity on derived in-situ particle size distributions are unknown. Thus, precise relationships between the intensity of scattered light and particle size and shape are required, as based on accurate calculations of scattering properties of ice crystals. In this study, single-scattering properties of ice crystals smaller than 50 ㎛ are calculated at a wavelength of 0.55 ㎛ using a numerically exact method (i.e., discrete dipole approximation). For these calculations, hexagonal ice crystals with varying aspect ratios are used to represent the shapes of natural small ice crystals to determine the errors caused by non-spherical ice crystals measured by forward scattering probes. It is shown that the calculated errors in sizing nonspherical ice crystals are at least 13% and 26% in forward (4~12°) and backward (168~176°) directions, respectively, and maximum errors are up to 120% and 132%.
We present real.time, rapid detection of Mycoplasma pneumonia in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) inside a Y.channel polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic device by means of optical fiber monitoring of latex immunoagglutination. The latex immunoagglutination assay was performed with serially diluted Mycoplasma pneumonia solutions using highly carboxylated polystyrene particles of 390nm and 500nm diameter conjugated with monoclonal anti. Mycoplasma pneumonia . Proximity optical fibers were located around the viewing cell of the device, which were used to measure the increase in 45${\b{o}}$ forward light scattering of the immunoagglutinated particles. The detection limit was less than 50 $pgml^{-1}$ both for 390nm and 500nm microspheres with the detection time less than 90 seconds.
A facile and effective approach has been developed to prepare hybrid hollow microspheres, via consecutive processes of pickering mini-emulsion polymerization for core-shell formation, and calcination of the sacrificial core. The resulting hollow composite particles have mono-layered shells. The morphology and size characteristics of synthesized composite particles were investigated, using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements.
