  • We propose the new sampling method, called modified ranked ordering set sampling (MROSS). Kim and Kim (2003) suggested the sign test using the ranked ordering set sampling (ROSS), and showed that the asymptotic relative efficiency (ARE) of ROSS against RSS for sign test increases as sample size does. We propose the estimator for the population mean using MROSS. The relative precision (RP) of estimator of the population mean using MROSS method with respect to the usual estimator using modified RSS is higher, and when the underlying distribution is skewed, the bias of the proposed estimator is smaller than that of several ranked set sampling estimators.

  • Multiple imputation, proposed by Rubin, is a procedure for handling missing data. One of the attractive parts of multiple imputation is the simplicity of the variance estimation formula. Because of the simplicity, it has been often abused and misused beyond its original prescription. This paper provides the bias of the multiple imputation variance estimator for a linear point estimator and discusses when the bias can be safely neglected.

  • The purpose of this study was (1) to identify the experimental bias which could appear person perception as results of development methods (2) to find out the most desirable method in developments of stimulus. The research was a quasi experiment and the subjects were 358 male and female undergraduate students by convenient sampling. The experimental instruments consisted of a set of stimulus and semantic differential scales of 7-point bi-polar adjectives. The collected data were analyzed by Principle Component Analysis, ANOVA(analysis of variance), Scheffe's multiple range test. The independent variables were developing methods of stimulus(live person, photography of real person, 2 kinds of black and white line drawing, 2 kinds of color drawing). The results were as follows. First, five factors which were potency, sociality, appearance, evaluation, activity impressional dimensions emerged to account for the methods of development of stimulus. Second, the methods of development of stimulus had significant effects on potency, sociality, appearance, activity factors. In sociality factors, the impression of photographic stimulus was the closest to the live person's impression. However in the appearance and activity impressions, significant difference existed between live person and other developing stimulus. In the potency impression, black and white line-drawing gave the highest impressional bias. In the sociability and appearance impressions, color-drawing stimulus gave the highest impressional bias. Result: On conclusion the developments of stimulus can effect on stimulus person's impressions and these effects can produce experimental biases, the photographic stimulus gave the least impressional bias. The study shows that photography of real person will produce minimize measurement error.

  • The Korean National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) has biannually (spring and fall, respectively) deployed a bottom trawl survey along the coastal areas for last decade, taking samples on a regular basis (i.e., a systematic sampling). Despite the availability of the survey data, NIFS has not yet officially reported the estimates of the groundfish population sizes as well as has not evaluated uncertainty of the estimates. The objectives of our study were to infer the relative size of a fish population, applying two different sampling techniques (namely simple and stratified sampling) with different observation units to the NIFS survey data, and to compare those two techniques in bias and precision. For demonstration purposes, we used data on Pacific cod (Gadus macrocephalus) collected by the 2011-2015 surveys, and the results of simple and stratified sampling showed that the point estimates and precision varied by observation unit as well as the sampling technique.

  • An empirical Bayesian approach is discussed for estimation of characteristics from the two-way balanced rotation sampling design which includes U.S. Current Population Survey and Canadian Labor Force Survey as special cases. An empirical Bayesian estimator is derived for monthly effect under presence of two types of biases and correlations It is shown that the marginal distribution of observation provides more general correlation structure than that frequentist has assumed. Consistent estimators are derived for hyper-parameters in Normal priors.

  • For crops that are planted in a lattice layout, sampling designs can be made to take advantage of this regular arrangement. In order to select which tobacco plants to be examined in a survey to estimate disease loss in tobacco a method of, so called, bent plots was devised based on the regularity of plantings in the tobacco fields. We will first describe this sample selection and measurement method and then provide estimators and their bias and variance properties.

  • We consider using ranked set sampling methods to draw inference about the three well-known measures of overlap, namely Matusita's measure $\rho$, Morisita's measure $\lambda$ and Weitzman's measure $\Delta$. Two exponential populations with different means are considered. Due to the difficulties of calculating the precision or the bias of the resulting estimators of overlap measures, because there are no closed-form exact formulas for their variances and their exact sampling distributions, Monte Carlo evaluations are used. Confidence intervals for those measures are also constructed via the bootstrap method and Taylor series approximation.

  • In order to develop a confident sampling technique, we designed and constructed a 6-port manifold MFC sampling system for collecting gaseous pollutants in air. Using this instrumentation, we tested the performance criteria of MFC system in terms of: (1) flow rate; (2) MFC-to-MFC variability; (3) tube-to-tube variability; and (4) time. It was interesting to find that the later two factors did not show any significant variations, while the former two show substantially large variations. However, as most of those variabilities are consistent enough to form systematic patterns, we were able to explain the occurrence patterns of all those MFC biases in terms of those four major variables. The overall results of our experiment suggest that one needs to use correction factor for each MFC unit under a given flow rate to maintain optimal accuracy and precision for sampling of those pollutants.

  • In the present study, a combined ratio cum regression estimator is proposed to estimate the population mean of the study variable in the presence of a non-response using an auxiliary variable under double sampling. The expressions of bias and mean squared error(MSE) based on the proposed estimator is derived under double (or two stage) sampling to the first degree of approximation. Some estimators are also derived from the proposed class by allocating the suitable values of constants used. A comparison of the proposed estimator with the usual unbiased estimator and other derived estimators is carried out. An empirical study is carried out to demonstrate the performance of the suggested estimator and of others; it is endow that the empirical results backing the theoretical study.

  • A variety of practical problems can be addressed in the framework of rotation (successive) sampling. The present work presents a sample rotation pattern where sampling units are drawn on two successive occasions. The problem of estimation of population variance on current (second) occasion in two - occasion successive (rotation) sampling has been considered. A class of estimators has been proposed for population variance that includes many estimators as a particular case. Asymptotic properties of the proposed class of estimators are discussed. The proposed class of estimators is compared with the sample variance estimator when there is no matching from the previous occasion. Optimum replacement policy is discussed. Results are supported with the empirical means of comparison.
