  • In robust design, the mean and variance of design performance are frequently used to measure the design performance and its robustness under uncertainties. In this paper, we present the Gauss-type quadrature formula as a rigorous method for mean and variance estimation involving arbitrary input distributions and further extend its use to robust design optimization. One dimensional Gauss-type quadrature formula are constructed from the input probability distributions and utilized in the construction of multidimensional quadrature formula such as the tensor product quadrature (TPQ) formula and the univariate dimension reduction (UDR) method. To improve the efficiency of using it for robust design optimization, a semi-analytic design sensitivity analysis with respect to the statistical moments is proposed. The proposed approach is applied to a simple bench mark problems and robust topology optimization of structures considering various types of uncertainty.

  • A robust controller is proposed for regulating effectively the pressure of control cylinder of swash plate type variable displacement axial piston pump. In order to design a precise and robust pressure control system, a mathematical model for swash plate control system is identified by the signal compression method. Based on the identified mathematical model, an $H_{\infty}$ robust swash plate controller is designed which is robust to the variation of the load pressure. The precise and robust swash plate control characteristics are verified by experiments.

  • In this paper, the position tracking control problem of the servo system with nonlinear dynamic friction is issued. The nonlinear dynamic friction contains a directly immeasurable friction state variable and the uncertainty caused by incomplete parameter modeling and its variations. In order to provide the efficient solution to these control problems, we propose the composite control scheme, which consists of the robust friction state observer, the FNN approximator and the approximation error estimator with sliding mode control. In first, the sliding mode controller and the robust friction state observer is designed to estimate the unknown internal state of the LuGre friction model. Next, the FNN estimator is adopted to approximate the unknown lumped friction uncertainty. Finally, the adaptive approximation error estimator is designed to compensate the approximation error of the FNN estimator. Some simulations and experiments on the servo system assembled with ball-screw and DC servo motor are presented. Results show the remarkable performance of the proposed control scheme. The robust friction state observer can successfully identify immeasurable friction state and the FNN estimator and adaptive approximation error estimator give the robustness to the proposed control scheme against the uncertainty of the friction parameters.

  • In practical wireless systems, the erroneous channel state information (CSI) sometimes deteriorates the performance drastically. This paper focuses on robust design of coordinated set planning of coordinated multi-point (CoMP) transmission, with respect to the feedback delay and link error. The non-ideal channel models involving various uncertainty conditions are given. After defining a penalty factor, the robust net ergodic capacity optimization problem is derived, whose variables to be optimized are the number of coordinated base stations (BSs) and the divided area's radius. By the maximum minimum criterion, upper and lower bounds of the robust capacity are investigated. A practical scheme is proposed to determine the optimal number of cooperative BSs. The simulation results indicate that the robust design based on maxmin principle is better than other precoding schemes. The gap between two bounds gets smaller as transmission power increases. Besides, as the large scale fading is higher or the channel is less reliable, the number of the cooperated BSs shall be greater.

  • In this paper, the robust control scheme with the improved control performance within the boundary layer is proposed. In the control scheme, the robust controller based on the traditional variable structure control method is modified to have the adaptation within the boundary layer. From this controller, the width of the boundary layer where the robust control input is smoothened out can be given by an appropriate value. But the improved control performance within the boundary layer can be achieved without the so-called control chattering because the role of adaptive control is to compensate for the uncovered portions of the robust control occurred from the continuous approximation within the boundary layer Simulation tests for circular navigation of an underwater wall-ranging robot developed for inspection of wall surfaces in the research reactor, TRIGA MARK III, confirm the performance improvement. • Given a periodic reference signal or disturbance, repetitive control is a special control scheme to reduce a tracking error effectively by the periodic signal generator in the repetitive controller. In general, a repetitive controller is added on the existing feedback control system to improve the tracking performance. However, because the information used in the design of the feedback controller is not taken into account, the design problem of the repetitive controller is totally another problem irrespective of that of the feedback controller. In this paper, we present a more general method to design an add-on type repetitive controller using the information on the performance of the existing feedback control system. We first show that a robust stability condition of repetitive control systems is obtained using the well-known robust performance condition of general feedback control systems. It is also shown that we can obtain a steady-state tracking error described in a simple form without time-delay element if the robust stability condition is satisfied for the repetitive control system. From the obtained results, several design criterions for repetitive controller are provided. Through the simulation study, the feasibility of the proposed method is verified.

  • This article deals with the problem of designing a robust algorithm for the motion control of robot manipulator whose nonlinear dynamics contain various uncertainties. To ensure high performance of control system, a model-based feedforward compensation with continuous robust control has been developed. The control structure based on the deterministic approach consists of two parts : the nominal control law is first introduced to stabilize the system without uncertainties, then a robust nonlinear control law is adopted to compensate for both the resulting errors(or structured uncertainties) and unstructured uncertainties. The uncertainties assumed in this study are bounded by polynomials in the Euclidean norms of system states with known bounding coefficients. The presented control scheme is relatively simple as well as computationally efficient. With a feasible class of desired trajectories, the proposed control law provides sufficient criteria which guarantee that all possible responses of the closed-loop system are uniformly ultimately bounded in the presence of uncertainties. Therefore, the control algorithm proposed is shown to be robust with respect to the involved uncertainties.

  • Recently, there are various researches using inaudible high frequencies like as wireless communication based smart devices, data transmission algorithm, indoor positioning trace technologies. However, when they use high frequencies of inaudible range, they have a problem that the accuracy of data transmission with high frequencies was low because of interference from ambient noise in our real life. To solve this problem, in this paper, we proposed an application based on smart phone and server system for collection of ambient noise and detection of robust high frequency range. The server system could detect the robust high frequency range from statistical analysis of collected noise and the robust high frequency could avoid interference from ambient noise. We tested the proposed application's ability to gather noise and high frequencies for a certain period of time to evaluate performance. According to the testing results, we confirmed that the proposed application and server system could detect a robust high-frequency range via noise analysis in real life. Therefore, the proposed application and server could be a useful technology for future research on inaudible high frequencies.

  • This paper deals with a robust semi-active control algorithm which is applicable to a semi-active suspension with a multi-state damper. Since the controllable damping rates are discrete in case of a multi-state semi-active damper, the desired damping rate can not be produced exactly even if force-velocity relations of a multi-state semi-active damper is completely known. In addition, damping characteristics of the semi-active dampers are different from damper to damper. A robust nonlinear control law based on sliding control is developed. The main objective of the proposed control strategies is to improve ride quality by tracking the desired active force with a multi-state damper of which the force-velocity relations are "not" completely known. The performance of th proposed semi-active control law is numerically compared to those of the control law based on a bilinear model and a passive suspension. The proposed control algorithm is robust to nonlinear characteristics and uncertainty of the force-Velocity relations of multi-state dampers.

  • In this paper, the robust superconductor flywheel energy storage system(SFESS) controller using $H_{\infty}$ control theory was designed to damp low frequency oscillation of power system. The main advantage of the $H_{\infty}$ controller is that uncertainties of power system can be included at the stage of controller design. Both disturbance attenuation and robust stability for the power system were treated simultaneously by using mixed sensitivity $H_{\infty}$ problem. The robust stability and the performance for uncertainties of power system were represented by frequency weighted transfer function. To verify control performance of proposed SFESS controller using $H_{\infty}$ control, the closed loop eigenvalue and the damping ratio in dominant oscillation mode of power system were analyzed and nonlinear simulation for one-machine infinite bus system was performed under disturbance for various operating conditions. The results showed that the proposed $H_{\infty}$ SFESS controller was more robust than conventional power system stabilizer (PSS).
