  • This study aims to investigate the aspects of revision in the external and internal structure of curriculum and documentation in Korea and Japan and to propose the direction and task to enhance the current framework of the national curriculum. Japan has been selected for comparison in that it explicitly prepared social changes such as the dramatic evolution of artificial intelligence and population aging in its new curriculum. Therefore, various aspects of revision were analyzed the 2009 & 2015 revised mathematics curriculum of Korea and the 2008 & 2017 mathematics curriculum of Japan respectively in the elementary, middle, and high school grade bands. Then, the differences between the two countries were identified through comparison. First, the structure of the mathematics curriculum in Japan was connected with the general guidelines more tightly than Korea, and the external structure of the mathematics curriculum stayed consistently after the revision. Second, contrary to Korea, which pursued the appropriateness and reduction of mathematical content, Japanese mathematics curriculum has been pursuing detailed contents both quantitatively and qualitatively. Lastly, Japan emphasized statistical problem-solving ability. Based on this, we suggested considering of consistency in the structure curriculum documentation, detailing contents of the curriculum, and strengthening of statistical education.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify how didactic transposition (teaching and learning methods) has occurred and developed in the teaching of graphs in elementary school mathematics textbooks for third and fourth graders according to the previous and current curricula. In this study, we analyzed the lesson units on bar graphs and line graphs in mathematics textbooks for each curriculum, from the fifth curriculum to the 2015 revised curriculum. We also investigated the implication of statistics education deriving from didactic transposition (teaching and learning methods). We found that the timing of teaching bar and line graphs was rarely changed as the curriculum has changed. In addition, the use of technology was not actively implemented in school statistics, although the curriculum emphasized the use of technology in statistical education. Lastly, the textbooks did not address the variability and distribution of data and the sample or sampling process, which are significant statistical concepts. Based on the findings of this study, we suggest how to teach statistical graphs and what to consider for the next mathematics textbook.

  • This study discussed a sketch map and planar figure, classical contents in math curriculum of Korea. Two problems were posed. One was the degree of difficulty and ambiguous intentions of some contents in 5th grade math textbook of 2009 revised curriculum. The other was the status of sketch maps and planar figures in more general view. We looked into elementary mathematics textbooks of former Korean national curriculums and other countries to discuss the problems. The reason why the present Korean textbook has such contents was considered, based on the result of searching former Korean and foreign textbooks. The suggestions in view of expression and building of 3D shapes were also talked.

  • This study analyzes divisor and multiple in elementary school mathematics textbooks published according to the first to the 7th curriculum, in a view point of the didactic transposition theory. In the first and second textbooks, the divisor and the multiple are taught in the chapter whose subject is on the calculations of the fractions. In the third and fourth textbooks, divisor and multiple became an independent chapter but instructed with the concept of set theory. In the fifth, the sixth, and the seventh textbooks, not only divisor multiple was educated as an independent chapter but also began to be instructed without any conjunction with set theory or a fractions. Especially, in the seventh textbook, the understanding through activities of students itself are strongly emphasized. The analysis on the each curriculum periods shows that the divisor and the multiple and the reduction of a fractions to the lowest terms and to a common denominator are treated at the same period. Learning activity elements are increase steadily as the textbooks and the mathematical systems are revised. The following conclusion can be deduced based on the textbook analysis and discussion for each curriculum periods. First, loaming instruction method also developed systematically with time. Second, teaching method of the divisor and multiple has been sophisticated during the 1st to 7th curriculum textbooks. And the variation of the teaching sequences of the divisor and multiple is identified. Third, we must present concrete models in real life and construct textbooks for students to abstract the concepts by themselves. Fourth, it is necessary to develop some didactics for students' contextualization and personalization of the greatest common divisor and least common multiple. Fifth, the 7th curriculum textbooks emphasize inquiries in real life which teaming activities by the student himself or herself.

  • The purpose of this paper is to find out the full extent of abilities of elementary students on area of operations and the effects on student's affective domain toward mathematics, after providing 3rd grade students with Skemp's play activities instead of providing activities suggested in the textbook of 7th curriculum. For this study, we will first analyse new elementary mathematics curriculum of 3rd grade and then explore mathematical factors for play activities related to operational sections. The play activities are revised from that of Skemp's for our classroom circumstances, but the ideas included from Skemp's such as thinking aloud were not changed. The experimental group while consists of 39 students were taught Skemp's play activities instead of usual textbook activities for 30 hours for the second term. In all other area, both the experimental group and the comparative group were taught the same contents. Statistical data is as follows 1) In addition and subtraction, the experimental group had 5.6% higher score than the comparative's, but the difference of mean of the both groups is not significant within 5% level. 2) In multiplication and division, the experimental group had 7.8% higher score than the comparative's and also the difference of mean of the beth within 5% level is significant. 3) When measured the effects in affective domain, the interests, attitude, and values for mathematics had about 10% higher score after the experiment than before the experiment. So we conclude that Skemp's activities are more effective than the activities suggested in the textbook on the area of operations, especially in multiplication and division.

  • In this study, how to instruct the computational estimation of addition and subtraction was considered from the perspective of a 'intended-written-implemented' multi-dimensional curriculum. To this end, the 2015 revised elementary school mathematics curriculum as a intended curriculum and the 2015 revised first~sixth grade textbook as a written curriculum were analyzed with respect to how to instruct the computational estimation of addition and subtraction. As an implemented curriculum, a research study was conducted in relation to the method of instructing teachers about the computational estimation of addition and subtraction. As a result, first, it is necessary to discuss how to develop the ability to estimate and set it as a teaching goal and achievement standard in a separate curriculum to instruct it with learning content. Second, it is necessary to provide an opportunity to learn about various estimation methods by presenting specific activities so that students can learn the estimation itself in a separate operation method. Third, in order to improve the computational estimating ability of addition and subtraction, contents related to the computational estimation need to be included in the achievement criteria, and discussions on the expansion of the areas, and the diversification of the instructing time will be needed.

  • This research intends to give a practice of mathematics lesson-critique and some perspectives on a mathematics lesson in the elementary school level. We carried out a mathematics lesson-critique on a lesson chosen as a good lesson by a local educational district in Korea. The main themes of mathematics lesson-critique were the reconstruction of lesson models, the pursuit of relational understanding, the activation of mathematical communication, and the didactical transformation by a in-service teacher. Meanwhile we confirmed that we need to discuss the properness and adequateness of contents about division of natural numbers given in the elementary mathematics textbook and teachers' guide according to the revised 2007 mathematics curriculum.

  • The purpose of this study is to review how to introduce a division algorithm in mathematics textbooks which were applied 2009 revised curriculum. As a result, the textbooks do not introduce the algorithm in the context of division by equal part. The standardized division algorithm was introduced apart from the stepwise division algorithms and there is no explanation in between them. And there is a lack connectivity between activities and algorithms. This study is expected to help new curriculum and textbook to introduce division algorithm in proper way.
