In radiography, an antiscatter grid is a well-known device for eliminating unexpected x-ray scatter. We investigate a new stationary grid artifact suppression method based on a nonsubsampled contourlet transform (NSCT) incorporated with Gaussian band-pass filtering. The proposed method has an advantage that extracts the Moiré components while minimizing the loss of image information and apply the prior information of Moiré component positions in multi-decomposition sub-band images. We implemented the proposed algorithm and performed a simulation and an experiment to demonstrate its viability. We did this experiment using an x-ray tube (M-113T, Varian, focal spot size: 0.1 mm), a flat-panel detector (ROSE-M Sensor, Aspenstate, pixel dimension: 3032 × 3800 pixels, pixel size: 0.076 mm), and carbon graphite-interspaced grids (JPI Healthcare, 18 cm × 24 cm, line density: 103 LP/inch and 150 LP/inch, ratio: 5:1, focal distance: 65 cm). Our results indicate that the proposed method successfully suppressed grid artifacts by reducing them without either reducing the spatial resolution or causing negative side effects. Consequently, we anticipate that the proposed method can improve image acquisition in a stationary grid x-ray system as well as in extended x-ray imaging.
Objectives: With the object of finding the appropriate conditions and algorithms for dimensional analysis of human EEG, we calculated correlation dimensions in the various condition of sampling rate and data aquisition time and improved the computation algorithm by taking advantage of bit operation instead of log operation. Methods: EEG signals from 13 scalp lead of a man were digitized with A-D converter under the condition of 12 bit resolution and 1000 Hertz of sampling rate during 32 seconds. From the original data, we made 15 time series data which have different sampling rate of 62.5, 125, 250, 500, 1000 hertz and data acqusition time of 10, 20, 30 second, respectively. New algorithm to shorten the calculation time using bit operation and the Least Trimmed Squares(LTS) estimator to get the optimal slope was applied to these data. Results: The values of the correlation dimension showed the increasing pattern as the data acquisition time becomes longer. The data with sampling rate of 62.5 Hz showed the highest value of correlation dimension regardless of sampling time but the correlation dimension at other sampling rates revealed similar values. The computation with bit operation instead of log operation had a statistically significant effect of shortening of calculation time and LTS method estimated more stably the slope of correlation dimension than the Least Squares estimator. Conclusion: The bit operation and LTS methods were successfully utilized to time-saving and efficient calculation of correlation dimension. In addition, time series of 20-sec length with sampling rate of 125 Hz was adequate to estimate the dimensional complexity of human EEG.
This paper presents a new technique to analyze data on the coordinate x, y, z and apply these data to design the motion control to improve the efficiency of the engraving machine so that it can engrave accordingly in 3 dimensions. First, the tool path on the x-y plane is analyzed to be synchronized with the z-axis. The digital data is then sent to the motion control to guide the movement of the engrave point on the x-y plane. Tool path moves along the x-axis with zero degree and different values of the y-axis according to the coordinate of the digital data and the analysis along z-axis to determine the depth for engraving. The depth can be specified from the gray level with the 256 levels of resolution. The data obtained includes the distances on x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis, the acceleration of the engrave point's movement, and the speed of the engrave point's movement. These data is then transfered to the motion control to guide the movement of the engrave point along the z-axis associated with the x-y plane. The results indicate that engraving using this technique is fast and continuous. The specimen obtained looks perfect in 3D view.
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are a class of two-dimensional (2D) materials that have attracted growing interest because of their promising applications. The properties of TMDs strongly depend on the crystalline structure and the number and stacking sequence of layers in their crystals and thin films. Though electrical, mechanical, and magnetic studies of 2D materials are being conducted, there is an evident lack of direct atom-by-atom visualization, limiting insight on these highly exciting material systems. Herein, we present our recent studies on the characterization of 2D layered materials by means of aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), in particular via high angle annular dark field (HAADF) imaging. We have identified the atomic arrangements and defects in 2H stacked TMDs, 1T stacked TMDs, distorted 1T stacked TMDs, and vertically integrated heterojunctions of 2D TMDs crystals.
An optical grism for education is fabricated and tested. It is composed of a transmission grating as dispersion element and a prism as diffraction angle compensation device. The transmission grating is Edmundoptics #49-584(spatial frequency 600 lines/mm, dimension $50mm{\times}50mm$). The prism is the fused silica type with angles ($41.3^{\circ}$, $-48.7^{\circ}$, $-90^{\circ}$). The grism device is fabricated by bonding the transmission grating and the prism with an optical adhesive. The zig for assembling the grism, telescope and camera is composed of an aluminum tube, an aluminum disk ring and a T-ring camera adaptor. The fabricated optical grism spectrograph is tested in laboratory using Halogen lamp and Neon lamp with DSLR camera. And the grism assembled with reflector telescope is tested in a field using stellar light. The results show good agreements with design parameters. The wavelength coverage range of the grism is 250 nm at the un-deviated wavelength of 506 nm. The wavelength resolution is 0.11 nm/pixel.
In this study, comprehensive two dimension gas chromatography (2D GC-MS) and 15 T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (15T FT-ICR MS) connected to atmospheric pressure photo ionization (APPI) have been combined to obtain detailed chemical composition of a diesel oil sample. With 2D GC-MS, compounds with aliphatic alkyl, saturated cyclic ring(s), and one aromatic ring structures were mainly identified. Sensitivity toward aromatic compounds with more than two aromatic rings was low with 2D GC-MS. In contrast, aromatic compounds containing up to four benzene rings were identified by APPI FT-ICR MS. Relatively smaller abundance of cyclic ring compounds were found but no aliphatic alkyl compounds were observed by APPI FT-ICR MS. The data presented in this study clearly shows that 2D GC-MS and 15T FT-ICR MS provides different aspect of an oil sample and hence they have to be considered as complementary techniques to each other for more complete understanding of oil samples.

Given the widespread use of the Finite Element Method in strength analysis, automatic mesh generation is an important component in the computer-aided design of parts and assemblies. For a given resolution of geometric accuracy, the purpose of mesh generators is to discretize the continuous model of a part within this error limit. Sticking to this condition often produces many small elements around small features in spite that these regions are usually of little interest and computer resources are thus wasted. Therefore, it is desirable to selectively suppress small features from the model before discretization. This can be achieved by low-pass filtering a CAD model. A spatial function of one dimension higher than the model of interest is represented using the Fourier basis functions and the region where the function yields a value greater than a prescribed value is considered as the extent of a shape. Subsequently, the spatial function is low-pass filtered, yielding a shape without the small features. As an undesirable effect to this operation, all sharp corners are rounded. Preservation of sharp corners is important since stress concentrations might occur there. This is why the LPF (low-pass filtered) model can not be directly used. Instead, the distances of the boundary elements of the original shape from the LPF model are calculated and those that are far from the LPF model are identified and removed. It is shown that the number of mesh elements generated on the simplified model is much less than that of the original model.
Experimental investigations of the magnetization, magnetostriction and magnetoelectric (ME) effects were performed on sandwich - type Metglas/PZT/Metglas laminate composites. The results have been analyzed by taking into account the demagnetization contribution. The study has pointed out that the magnetic flux concentration is strongly improved in piezomagnetic laminates with a narrower width leading to a significant enhancement of the ME effects. The piezomagnetic laminates with the optimal area dimension were integrated to form a 2-D geomagnetic device, which simultaneously can precisely detect the strength as well as inclination of the earth's magnetic field. In this case, a magnetic field resolution of better than $10^{-4}$ Oe and an angle precision of ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}$ were determined. This simple and low-cost geomagnetic-field device is promising for various applications.

The present study discusses the results of the controlled precipitation of HgTe nanocrystals in a PbTe semiconductor matrix and demonstrates its effectiveness in producing well-organized and crystallographically aligned semiconductor nanocrystals. Following the similar procedure used in metallic alloys, the semiconductor alloys are treated at 600$^{\circ}C$ for 48 hours, quenched and aged up to 500 hours at 300$^{\circ}C$ and 450$^{\circ}C$ to induce homogeneous nucleation and growth of HgTe nanocrystalline precipitates. Examination of the resulting precipitates using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution TEM (HRTEM) reveals that the coherent HgTe precipitates form as thin discs along the {100} habit planes making a crystallographic relation of {100}$\sub$HgTe///{100}$\sub$PbTe/ and [100]$\sub$HgTe///[100]$\sub$PbTe/. It is also found that the nato-disc undergoes a gradual thickening and a faceting under isothermal aging up to 500 hours without any noticeable coarsening. These results, combined with the extreme dimension of the precipitates (4 nm in length and sub-nanometer in thickness) and the simplicity of the formation process, leads to the conclusion that controlled precipitation is an effective method for the preparation of the desirable quantum-dot nanostructures.
In this paper, the abdominal-deformation measurement scheme is conducted on a shape-flexible mannequin using the DIC technique in a stereo-vision system. Firstly, during the integer-pixel displacement search, a novel fractal dimension based on an adaptive-ellipse subset area is developed to track an integer pixel between the reference and deformed images. Secondly, at the subpixel registration, a new mutual-learning adaptive particle swarm optimization (MLADPSO) algorithm is employed to locate the subpixel precisely. Dynamic adjustments of the particle flight velocities that are according to the deformation extent of each interest point are utilized for enhancing the accuracy of the subpixel registration. A test is performed on the abdominal-deformation measurement of the shape-flexible mannequin. The experiment results indicate that under the guarantee of its measurement accuracy without the cause of any loss, the time-consumption of the proposed scheme is significantly more efficient than that of the conventional method, particularly in the case of a large number of interest points.
