  • The lubrication state between contacting bodies with rolling and sliding under loaded condition is generally understood by the conception shown in Figure 1. When the lubricating oil film formation between facing bodies is good enough to separate these bodies by the hydrodynamic pressure, this state is called by the expression of "hydrodynamic lubrication". The thickness of oil film is so large that the lubricating oil between facing bodies behaves as fluid and metal-to-metal contact between surface roughness asperities on facing bodies does not occur. When the oil film thickness becomes thinner or when the surface roughness height becomes larger, top of surface roughness asperities on facing bodies reaches very near to each other and there the oil or absorbed oil molecules on the surface of facing bodies behave no more as fluid. Partly metal-to-metal contact of surface roughness asperities occurs. Such lubrication state is called by the expression "mixed-lubrication". When the oil film thickness becomes more thinner or surface roughness height becomes larger, metal-tometal contact or contact via absorbed oil molecules dominate at most of the part in contact zone. Such state is called by the expression "boundary lubrication". Schematic representation of these three regimes of lubrication is shown in Figure 1.rication is shown in Figure 1.

  • 'Slope' is an invariant of a straight line and 'Linear Equation' is an algebraic representation of a straight line in the cartesian plane. The concept 'slope' is necessary for algebraically representing a geometrical figure, line. In this article, we investigate how those concepts are dealt with in school mathematics and suggest some improvement methods.

  • In this paper, we propose a new approach to learning a discriminative model for figure/ground segmentation by incorporating the bag-of-features and conditional random field (CRF) techniques. We advocate the use of image patches instead of superpixels as the basic processing unit. The latter has a homogeneous appearance and adheres to object boundaries, while an image patch often contains more discriminative information (e.g., local image structure) to distinguish its categories. We use pixel-level sparse coding to represent an image patch. With the proposed feature representation, the unary classifier achieves a considerable binary segmentation performance. Further, we integrate unary and pairwise potentials into the CRF model to refine the segmentation results. The pairwise potentials include color and texture potentials with neighborhood interactions, and an edge potential. High segmentation accuracy is demonstrated on three benchmark datasets: the Weizmann horse dataset, the VOC2006 cow dataset, and the MSRC multiclass dataset. Extensive experiments show that the proposed approach performs favorably against the state-of-the-art approaches.

  • In this paper, we propose a computer environment class for student's mental representations about non-Euclidean geometry. Through the software Cinderella, students construct knowledge about non-Euclidean geometry and recognize differentness between Euclidean and non-Euclidean geometry. Also they recognize an existence of non-Euclidean geometry newly and its mental representations with images represented in Cinderella. In geometry class, we make students can use many representations systematically and can figure a visual internal image by emphasizing a transform process. And then students can reason about non-Euclidean geometry.

  • The aims of this study is figure out the characteristics of justification patterns and mathematical representation which are derived from 14 mathematically gifted middle school students in the process of solving the spatial tasks on Archimedean solid. This study shows that mathematically gifted students apply different types of justification such as empirical, or deductive justification and partial or whole justification. It would be necessary to pay attention to the value of informal justification, by comparing the response of student who understood the entire transformation process and provided a reasonable explanation considering all component factors although presenting informal justification and that of student who showed formalization process based on partial analysis. Visual representation plays an valuable role in finding out the Idea of solving the problem and grasping the entire structure of the problem. We found that gifted students tried to create elaborated symbols by consolidating mathematical concepts into symbolic re-presentations and modifying them while gradually developing symbolic representations. This study on justification patterns and mathematical representation of mathematically gifted students dealing with spatial geometry tasks provided an opportunity for understanding their the characteristics of spacial geometrical thinking and expending their thinking.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the strategy of representation of homosexuality in the mainstream media and its meaning. And it also concerns what would be the limit of representations of homosexuality and what would be the discourse these representations produce in the major terrestrial broadcasting. For this investigation, we conducted the analysis of , the mainstream television drama, focused on the gay couple characters and their representations of conflicts and resolutions by comparing with the two heterosexual couples to figure out the differentiated representation strategies of homosexuality. As results of the analysis, the representation of sociogenic cause of conflict is absent for gay couple while it was found in the case of one heterosexual couple. And gay couple is exposed to the interpersonal conflicts against their family members than heterosexual couples and described as victims. Lastly, gay couple was represented as needing mediators to solve their problems while heterosexual couple was represented as ensuring subjectivity for the resolutions of conflicts.

  • In Korean textbooks, by T(x,y) = (x+a, y+b) where a and b are horizontal and vertical changes respectively, an arbitrary point on the original figure f(x, y) = 0 has been expressed as a point (x, y) and a point on a translated figure f(x-a, y-b) = 0 has been expressed as a point (x', y'). If an arbitrary point on a figure f(x, y) = 0 is expressed as a point (x, y), then a point (x, y) and a figure f(x, y) = 0 are different targets but the same characters are used. In this following study, there were found that the expressions in these textbooks were stuck for more than 50 years, so students' thoughts were stiff. And therefore these are a need to be improved so that those things are studied as follows. First, inducing a formula, what are the students' responses like when were expressed differently from textbooks? Second, based on the results reviewed, how will the expressions of the textbook be revised? Third, how do the students respond to the modified expressions? As the result, a point on the original figure were expressed differently from textbooks and a point on a translated figure was put as a point (x, y), and about it, all of the students surveyed said that this improved expressions made in the study were easier.

  • Since 2012, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe'sadministration began to promote women's participation and advancement in the workplace and established the Act on the Promotion of Female Participation and Career Advancement in the Workplace (the Act) in 2015. Some criticize this Act as a way to utilize women for economic development and to deal with the shrinking working population. In contrast, others point out that it is a law that can be beneficial for women. As such, this Act serves as an interesting case of a women's policy promoted by a conservative government. This paper's objective is to shed light on if and how women are substantively represented in the Diet members' statements made during the legislative debate of the bill on the Promotion of Female Participation and Career Advancement in the Workplace between 2014 and 2015. This paper asks two research questions. First, based on the mixed evaluation of the Act made in the studies about the Abe administration's women's policies, this research asks if the Diet members speak of women as resources to use for other economic and social goals or if women are substantively represented. Second, drawing insights from the literature on women's substantive representation, this research asks how Diet members speak for women. Particularly, based on the studies on conservatism and substantive representation of women, this question seeks to determine if Diet members engage in the conservative representation of women, taking women's roles as mothers and wives who provide care for children, husbands, and elders at home for granted. The results of the analysis demonstrate that the number of statements that explicitly claimed to use women was small. Second, while some Diet members of conservative political parties engaged in the conservative representation of women, there were more instances of non-conservative representation, in which a variety of types of women were represented. These findings reveal that even when the conservative government's intention to submit the bill was to utilize women rather than acting for women, Diet members could speak for various types of women and engage in the non-conservative representation of women. The findings also imply the importance of paying attention to formal and informal legislative deliberation rules to figure out how women's substantive representation can occur under a conservative government and in a legislature dominated by conservative parties.

  • This is paper aims to figure out the way movies and engineering have communicated and the right direction for better communication between them. Engineering no longer should be treated as playing a key role when it comes to film making. Engineering is essential in making films look real. It means that movies gain credibility from utilizing engineering, which all other types of arts also seek after. Films can be resonated better through mutual communication with engineering. The paper takes a close look at emotional aspects to figure out what the new direction of communication between movies and engineering is. People's lives shown in films and the material world that engineering represents are mingled to attain the emotional oneness between the two. This can be easily observed in Japanese movies where robots and humans have a close relationship or recent films whose theme is emotional exchange among humans and robots. This kind of contact leads us to explore newly found humans' position that was brought about in the wake of development in engineering and existential conditions that humans need to have accordingly. Artificial intelligence and neurology sectors that the engineering field is today earnestly working on are in line with it. Therefore, this article seeks to find out the meaning and value of communication between movies and engineering when establishing the fresh mankind model based on emotions and pursuit of diversity.
