  • to investigate occurrence of kiwifruit bacterial canker disease,172 kiwifmit orchards in Jeonnam and Gyeong-nam provinces were surveyed from March to April in 1999. In the south coast region of Korea, such as Haenam, Wando, Jindo, Jangheung, and Bosuns, red-rusty brown bacterial oozes were observed in 17 kiwifvuit orchards. Disease incidences varied from 2.2% to 100% depending on various regions. Total 22.8 ha of kiwifruit orchards were destroyed by occurrence backerial canker at 1999 in Korea. Orchard in Wando, Jindo, and Goheng were severely damaged in 1999. The seasonal variation of bacterial canker incidence was also investigated from 1996 to 1997 on leaves, vines and twigs of kiwifruit. Red-rusty brown bacterial ooze was exuded from mid February or early March to late April in creaked site of vine and twig. The seasonal incidence of bacterial canker on leaves appeared from late April to late June, and rapidly increased during May, Optimum growth temperature of Pseudomonas sytingae pv. actinidiae was at $25^{\circ}C$ on King's B medium and did not grow at 33$^{\circ}C$. We suggest that spreading of bacterial canker was suppressed under the plastic flim and windbreak net house.

  • The interaction of U(VI) (hexavalent uranium) species with natural organic matter (NOM) in KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel) groundwater is investigated using a laser spectroscopic technique. The luminescence spectra of the NOM are observed in the ultraviolet and blue wavelength regions by irradiating a laser beam at 266 nm in groundwater. The luminescence spectra of U(VI) species in groundwater containing uranium concentrations of $0.034-0.788mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ are measured in the green-colored wavelength region. The luminescence characteristics (peak wavelengths and lifetime) of U(VI) in the groundwater agree well with those of $Ca_2UO_2(CO_3)_3(aq)$ in a standard solution prepared in a laboratory. The luminescence intensities of U(VI) in the groundwater are weaker than those of $Ca_2UO_2(CO_3)_3(aq)$ in the standard solution at the same uranium concentrations. The luminescence intensities of $Ca_2UO_2(CO_3)_3(aq)$ in the standard solution mixed with the groundwater are also weaker than those of $Ca_2UO_2(CO_3)_3(aq)$ in the standard solution at the same uranium concentrations. These results can be ascribed to calcium-U(VI)-carbonate species interacting with NOM and forming non-radiative U(VI) complexes in groundwater.

  • Genetic differences among nine land races of Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer) were examined using RAPD markers. Land races of Korean ginseng were collected from nine regions in Korea: Cheongwon, Guesan, Geumsan, Namwon, Pochun, Yangju, Yeoncheon, Yeongju. Out of 48 RAPD primers tested, 5 primers (OPA 7, OPA 13, URP 2, URP 3 and UBC 3) produced remarkable bands which showing polymorphisms among evaluated collections. Lower levels of genetic diversity were in detected same land races than among other land races. Genetic differences within and among land races indicate heterogeneity. These results indicate that cultivated ginseng in Korea is heterogeneous. Genetic similarity matrices of RAPD profiles were generated via coefficients of variation and the data were processed by the cluster analysis (UPGMA). When 90 collections were evaluated using selected 5 primers, those were clustered to 5 and 3 subgroups. These differences in genetic variation between land races of Korean ginseng implied the potential source for further breeding of Korean ginseng.

  • This study was carried out to to execute the slope stabilization scheme of soil and weathered rock slope with forest road generating slope failure due to heavy rainfall. The timber piled stabilization by Shin's formulae for landslide-restraint pile as elastically supported elastic columns under distributed loads was applied on the unstable fill slope. The results obtained were summarized as follows: The timber piled stabilization was applied for unstable slopes such as the soil slope and weathered rock slope of metamorphic rock regions. The results indicated that pile interval of 0.5~1.0m was appropriate in the case of high hillslope gradients and 0.7~2.0m in the case of low hillslope gradients of soil slope, and Pile interval of 0.5~1.3m in the case of high hillslope gradients and 0.7~2.0m in the case of low hillslope gradients of weathered rock slope. Recommended pile length was around 4m for pile 1, 2 and 3, and nearly 3m for pile 4 and 5.

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to provide an actual guideline in determining the shape, diameter, and position of the implant in immediate implantation by the measurement of the thickness of facial and palatal plate, the thickness of cortical bone on the facial and palatal plate, the diameter of the root, and the distance between the roots in the cadavers. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The horizontal sections of 20 maxillae were measured and analyzed to obtain the average values. Resin blocks were produced and cut serially at 1 mm intervals from the cervical line to the root apex. Images of each section were obtained and the following measurements were performed: The thickness of the facial and palatal residual bone at each root surface, the thickness of the facial and palatal cortical bone at the interdental region, the diameter of all roots of each section on the faciopalatal and mesiodistal diameter, and the interroot distance. Three specimens with measurements close to the average values were chosen and 3-dimensional images were reconstructed. RESULTS. The thickness of the facial and palatal cortical bone at the interdental region in the maxilla, the buccal cortical bone was thicker in the posterior region compared to the anterior region. The interroot distance of the alveolar bone thickness between the roots increased from anterior to posterior region and from coronal to apical in the maxilla. CONCLUSION. In this study, the limited results of the morphometric analysis of the alveolar ridge using the sections of maxilla in the cadavers may offer the useful information when planning and selecting optimal implant for immediate implantation in the maxilla.

  • One way to create a visually immersive environment is to utilize a front projection system. Especially, when enough space is not available behind the screen, it becomes difficult to install a back projection system, making the front projection an appropriate choice. A drawback associated with the front projection is, however, the interference of shadow. The shadow can be cast on the screen when the user is located between the screen and the projector. This shadow can negatively affect the user experience and reduce the sense of immersion by removing important information. There have been various attempts to eliminating shadows cast on the screen by using multiple projectors that compensate for each other with missing information. There is trade-off between calculataion time and desired accuracy in this mutual compensation. Accurate estimation of the shadow usually requires heavy computation while simple approaches suffer from inclusion of non-shadow regions in the result. We propose a novel approach to removing shadows created in the front projection system using the skeleton data obtained from a depth camera. The skeleton data helps accurately extract the shape of the shadow that the user cast without requiring much computation. Our method also utilizes a distance field to remove the afterimage of shadow that may occur when the user moves. We verify the effectiveness of our system by performing various experiments in an interactive environment created by a front projection system.

  • Temporal and spatial variations of nutrient elements (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate and silicate) in surface seawater off the west coast of Korea were investigated during three periods of field survey aboard R/V Eardo of KORDI (May 1995 and June 1996) and a patrol vessel of the National Maritime Police (November 1995). In general, the concentrations of nutrient elements were lowest in June and highest in November except for ammonia that showed the lowest concentration in May and the highest in November. The results tell us that the development of thermocline and tidal front restricts riverine and benthic supply of nutrient elements to surface waters in June in the offshore regions of the study area which become nutrient-depleted due to phytoplankton bloom in spring. In late fall (November) the level of nutrient concentrations of the surface waters of the study area become high due to vigorous vertical mixing within the water column, which supplies nutrient-enriched bottom water to the surface waters.

  • The regulation of gene expression plays an important rolet in cell cycle controls. In this study, a novel $mas3^+$ (mitosis associated protein) gene, a homolog of human SMARCADl, was isolated and characterized from a fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe. The overall homology between the helicase proteins of the two species is $87\%$. This DEAD/H box-containing molecule has seven highly conserved sequence regions that allow us to place it in the SNF2 family of the helicase superfamily. Knock-out cell of $mas3^+$ gene was constructed using kanMX6 as a selection marker. Survival of mas3 null mutant exposed to UV or MMS was similar to those of wild type cells. $mas3^+$ expression was lowest at $G_2$ and gradually increased. Cytokinesis of mas3 null mutant was abnormal at $26^{\circ}C\;and\;35^{\circ}C$ and a large number of multi-septate cells were produced. These results indicate that the $mas3^+$ is involved in cytokinesis and cell shape control.
