The turbulent flows in a tunnel mock-up($10L{\times}0.5W{\times}0.25H$ m3 : scale reduction 1/20) with rectangular cross section were investigated. The instantaneous velocity fields of Re = 49,029, 89,571 were measured by the 2-D PIV system which is consisted of double pulsed Nd:Yag laser and the tracer particles in the straight-duct mock-up where the flows were fully developed. The mean velocity profiles were taken from the ensemble averages of 1,000 instantaneous velocity fields. Simultaneously, numerical simulations(RANS) were performed to compare with experimental data using STREAM code. Non-linear eddy viscosity model (NLEVM : Abe-Jang-Leschziner Eddy Viscosity Model) was employed to resolve the turbulent flows in the duct. The calculated mean velocity profiles were well compared with PIV results. In the log-law profiles, the experimental data were in good agreement with numerical simulations all the way to the wake region except the viscous sub-layer (near wall region).

The free vibration and stability analysis of a spinning composite shaft modelled as a thin-walled closed beam is performed for several design parameters, such as ply angle, aspect ratio, and spin speed. The governing equations of spinning shafts based on the Timoshenko beam theory are derived via Hamilton's variational principle. Coriolis acceleration and anisotropy of constituent materials are incorporated in the derivation. The equations of motion are then transformed to the standard form of an eigenvalue problem for free vibration and stability analysis. Analytical results both for uniform circular cylindrical shaft and rectangular cross-section shaft are obtained by using extended Galerkin method, and the results are compared with those from FEM ANSYS analysis for a verification.

The present study investigates the pressure drop characteristics in rotating two-pass ducts. The duct has an aspect ratio (W/H) of 0.5 and a hydraulic diameter $(D_h)$ of 26.67mm. Rib turbulators are attached parallel in the four different arrangements on the leading and trailing surfaces of the test ducts. The ribs have a rectangular cross section of $2m(e){\times}3mm(w)$ and an attack angle of $70^{\circ}C$. The pitch-to-rib height ratio (p/e) is 7.5, and the rib height-to-hydraulic diameter ratio $(e/D_h)$ is 0.075. The results show that the highest pressure drop among each region appears in the turning region for the stationary case, but appears in the upstream region of the second pass for the rotating case. Effects of parallel rib arrangements are almost the same in the first pass for the stationary and rotating cases. In the second pass, however, heat transfer and pressure drop are high for the cases with parallel NN or PP type ribs in the stationary ducts. In the rotating ducts, they are high for the cases with parallel NN or PN type ribs.

Equations of motion for the vibration analysis of rotating pre-twisted beams with functionally graded material properties are derived in this paper. Based on Timoshenko beam theory, the effects of shear and rotary inertia are considered. The pre-twisted beam has a rectangular cross-section and is mounted on a rotating rigid hub with a setting angle. Functionally graded material (FGM) properties are considered along the height direction of the beam. The equations of stretching and bending motion are derived by Kane's method employing hybrid deformation variables. To validate the derived equations, natural frequencies of a rotating FGM pre-twisted beam are compared to those obtained by a commercial software ANSYS. The effects of the pre-twisted angle, slenderness ratio, hub radius, volume fraction exponent, and angular speed on the modal characteristics of the system are investigated with the proposed model.
New material applications and transparency are desired by contemporary architects. Its superb transparency and high strength make glass a very suitable building material -in spite of its brittleness- even for primary load bearing structures. Currently we will focus on load bearing glass beams, subjected to different loading types. Since glass beams have a very slender, rectangular cross section, they are sensitive to lateral torsional buckling. Glass beams fail under a critical buckling load at stresses that lie far below the theoretical simple bending strength, due to the complex combination of torsion and out-of-plane bending, which characterises the instability phenomenon. The critical load can be increased considerably by preventing the upper rim from moving out of the beam's plane. Different boundary conditions are examined for different loading types. The load carrying capacity of glass beams can be increased three times and more using relatively simple, cheap lateral restraints.

Plate buckling is very important design criteria when the ship is composed of high tensile steel plates. In general, the plate element contributes to inplane stiffness against the action of inplane load. If the inplane stiffness of the plating decreases due to buckling including the secondary buckling, the flexural rigidity of the cross section of a ship's hull also decreases. In these cases, the precise estimation of plate's behaviour after buckling is necessary, and geometric nonlinear behaviour of isolated plates is required for structural system analysis. In this connection, the author investigated the geometric nonlinear behaviour of simply supported rectangular plates under uniaxial compression in the longitudinal direction in which the principle of minimum potential energy method is employed. Based on the energy method, elastic large deflection analysis of isolated palate is performed and simple expression are derived to discuss the bifurcation paint type buckling and limit point type buckling.

The LGP with nanometer structures resulted in enhancement of optical efficiency. Its fundamental mechanism is to recycle the polarized light via one round-trip through QWP(Quarter-wave Plate) but the maximum efficiency to reach with this method is limited up to 2. To get the larger efficiency than this a LGP with 1D PC(one-dimensional photonic crystal) nanometer-patterned on its top and bottom surfaces is suggested. For its optimum design the computer simulation is performed and suggests a grating that the spatial frequency between adjacent patterns is 500nm, its height 250nm, duty cycle 50%, and its cross section is rectangular. The angles of transmitted light are nearly the same as the results expected from the generalized Snell's law. Thus the Mathematica code, developed in this experiment, will be applied to designing the optimized LGP. The LGP with nanometer-patterened 1D PC LGP on its both surfaces shows the enhancement of transmitted intensity distribution up to 5.7 times.
Coated conductors have been developed to increase piece length and critical current for electric power applications. Otherwise, Many efforts were carried out to reduce AC loss of coated conductor for AC applications. Twisting and cabling processes are effective to reduce AC loss but, these processes can not be applied for tape shaped coated conductor. It is inevitable to have thin rectangular shape because coated conductor is fabricated by thin film deposition process on metal substrate. In this study, round shape superconducting wire was first fabricated using coated conductors. First of all, Ag coated conductor was used. coated conductor was slitted to several wires with narrow width below 1mm. 12ea slitted wires were parallel stacked on top of another until making up the square cross-section. The bundle of coated conductors was heat treated to stick on each other by diffusion bonding and then copper plated to make round shape wire. Critical current of round wire was measured 185A at 77K, self field.

This paper investigates critical loads of the tapered Beck's columns with clamped and spring supports, subjected to a subtangential follower force. The linearly tapered columns with the solid rectangular cross-section is adopted as the column taper. The differential equation governing free vibrations of such Beck's columns is derived using the Bemoulli-Euler beam theory. Both divergence and flutter critical loads are calculated from the load-frequency curves which are obtained by solving the differential equation. The critical loads are presented as functions of various non-dimensional system parameters: the taper type, the subtangential parameter and the spring stiffness.

The effect of reinforced circular hole in a flat plate under general biaxial loading conditions is considered. The reinforcement is achieved by attaching a circular ring of uniform rectangular cross section along the boundary of the hole. This investigation includes a theoretical solution and an experimental conformation. In the theoretical analysis, Gurney's method is used to obtain a solution for the stress distribution and the solution is expressed in a general form, so that it can be applicable to the case of general biaxial loading and general values of Poisson's ratios. In the experimental work a systematic series of photoelastic models, as shown in Fig.5 and Table 1, were analyzed on polariscope. The experimental results were in good agreement with the theoretical ones, as shown in Fig.8 and 9. The conclusions derived are as follows: 1) The theoretical results, given in Eq. $(1){\sim}(5)$, are sufficient in accuracy for the engineering design purpose. 2) The stress concentration factor decreases as the ratio n increases, but not significant beyond n=3. 3) The stress concentration factor increase as the ratio m increases, but not significant below m=0.7.
