The purposes of this study were to a develop a preventive tailored early intervention program and to investigate the effects of the program on the quality of parenting for low income families. The subjects were eighty five infants, aged 13 to 32 months, and their mothers. Of the 85 mother-infant dyads, 42 dyads were randomly assigned to the experimental group and 43 dyads to the control group. To prevent the risks of the adverse development of infants from low income families a tailored intervention program was created based upon the transactional model. This emphasized the quality of the home environment and of the daily mother-infant interaction. The risk factors were assessed and progress monitoring was undertaken for the preventive tailored intervention treatment. In order to assess the effects of the program, HOME, the NCAST Teaching Scale and the Parenting Stress Index/Short From were used. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, ANCOVA, and the McNemar test. The experimental group showed a significant increase in performance and higher scores than the control group on the scores from HOME, and the NCAST Teaching Scale and significant decrease and lower scores in the Parenting Stress Index(SF).
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to construct a model that describes the health related quality of life in working women with preschool children and to verify the goodness of fitness of the model. Methods: The data were collected with a structured self-report questionnaire from 483 working women with preschool children. Results: The modified model showed a reasonable fitness to the data. Social support, job satisfaction, parenting stress, sense of coherence and depression accounted for 78% of the health related quality of life in working women with preschool children. Conclusion: This study suggests that the health related quality of life in working women with preschool children can be improved by reducing parenting stress and depression level, and by increasing social support, job satisfaction, and sense of coherence. Depression can also be managed by reducing parenting stress and by increasing job satisfaction and sense of coherence. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop intervention programs to increase the health related quality of life or to decrease depression in working women.
Purpose: This study was designed to identify how parenting stress and empowerment affect the quality of life in caregivers of children with disabilities. Methods: Caregivers assuming parenting responsibilities for children with disabilities under 18 yr of age were recruited at 8 local welfare centers, homes for children with disabilities, and parent associations in U city. They were asked to complete a questionnaire in a face to face interview or by self-report, and 265 data units were analyzed with stepwise multiple regression. Results: Parenting stress, empowerment and monthly income were statistically significant explaining 39% of the variance. Among the subconstructs of parenting stress and empowerment, parental distress ($\beta=-.42$, t=-6.45) and competence ($\beta=.30$, t=3.59) significantly influenced quality of life. Among the general characteristics, monthly income ($\beta=.10$, t=2.01) was found to be significantly related to quality of life. Conclusion: Nurses who work with children with disabilities and their caregivers need to focus on parental distress and competence to improve the quality of life of caregivers and to stimulate development in children with disabilities.
It has been repeatedly reported that the quality and quantity of relationships with other people moderate responses to stress and influence health and adjustment. This evidence has stimulated research on the characteristics of social support. In this review, the definition of social support for parents will be discussed. This study also will connect the concept of social support with family theories such as the human ecology theory and the developmental contextualism. The findings from previous studies will be summarized to examine the effects of social support on parenting and to understand the social support within a cultural context.
The present study investigated how mothers with infants and toddlers obtain information about parenting and examined the nature of maternal parenting knowledge in order to evaluate the quality of the information. The mothers' age and educational level were included in the analysis as a influential factor on parenting knowledge. Four hundred and twenty-nine mothers with infants and toddlers completed the questionnaires issued regarding the source and content of parenting information and parenting knowledge. The results indicated that the mothers with only one child preferred to utilize their friends and relatives as their primary source of information and the mothers with more than one child acquired parenting information from their own previous experience. Second, the subjects were most interested in acquiring information related to physical development and medical problems. Third, the main effects of all independent variables were found. In addition, the interactional effects between the educational level and source of parenting information for the mother with only one child and the interactional effects between age and source of parenting information for the mother with more than one child were determined as a result of this study. These results indicate that there are some high-risk groups when it comes to the acquisition of parenting knowledge and we suggest providing valid and reliable information to these most vulnerable groups.
The purpose of this study was to examine that marital conflict, maternal parenting behavior, and a child's friendship quality varied as a function of bully/victim groups. A sample of 227 elementary school children and their mothers participated in the study. Children answered questionnaires regarding maternal parenting behavior, friendship quality, and bullying/victimization and mothers rated their marital conflict. The data were analyzed by frequencies, factor analysis, one-way ANOVAs, and Duncan's post-hoc analyses. The bully/victim distribution was 8.4% bullies, 7.9% victims, 4.4% bully-victims, and 79.3% normative contrasts when reported by children themselves and 9.3% bullies, 4.8% victims, 5.3% bully-victims, and 80.6% normative contrasts when reported by peers. Bullies and bully-victims experienced higher marital conflict than normative contrasts. Bully-victims perceived higher maternal warmth than bullies and both bullies and victims perceived higher maternal rejection/punishment than normative contrasts. Victims perceived their mothers to be more permissive/neglected than normative contrasts, and bully-victims perceived them to be more overprotective than both bullies and normative contrasts. Both bullies and bully-victims showed higher negative function of friendship quality than victims.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parent-teacher relationships on mothers' parenting efficacy especially for toddlers. Methods: 225 mothers of toddlers completed questionnaires on parent-teacher relationships and parenting efficacy. This study used technical statistics, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis in order to analyze the collected data. Results: First, there was a significant correlation between parent-teacher relationships and mothers' parenting efficacy. Second, the parent-teacher relationships was an important factor in predicting mothers' parenting efficacy. In particular, when a teacher and mother develop practical collaboration for caring for and educating a child, the mothers' parenting efficacy was higher. Conclusion/Implications: These findings indicate that the parent-teacher relationship is a significant factor in order to improve the quality of parenting. The results especially support the importance of collaboration between teachers and parents and suggest that we need to find practical ways for collaborating in the field. Limitations of this study and implications for future research were discussed.
The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of maternal perception of children's temperament on parenting stress. The subjects of this study were 303 mothers of four to six-year-old. Evaluations of Parent and Teacher temperament questionnaire for Children 3-7 years of age(Tomas, Chess, & Kom, 1977)(korean version) was used to measure children's temperament, and PDH(Parenting Daily Hassles) was used to measure maternal perception of parenting stress. Data were analyzed by descriptive analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Peasons's Correlation and multiple regression analysis and Duncan test for post test by SPSS WIN program. The results of this study were as follows; First, the average level of maternal perception of children's temperament was the highest in the category of adaptability and the lowest in the category of threshold of responsiveness. Second, maternal perception of children's temperament was significantly different according to children's sex. Boys were perceived higher than girls for the category of activity level. Third, the degree of daily hassles was explained by adaptability, the quality of mood, and activity level relatively, while the intensity of parenting stress could be predicted orderly by adaptability, threshold of responsiveness, attention span & persistence, regularity, and activity level. Fourth, mother's daily hassles was explained 22% valiance by children's temperament such as adaptability, the quality of mood, and activity level. Future research should be done to identify the interaction of temperamental factors.
Purpose: This study aimed to explore the subjective sleep quality of depressed and non-depressed mothers in the late postpartum period and to determine the relationship with their health promoting behaviors, family functioning, parenting stress. Method: A non-probability sample of 128 mothers completed a self-administered questionnaires at 4-6weeks postpartum. The Edinburgh postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were used to measure mother's experiences of depression symptoms and sleep. Related factors of sleep quality were measured by the Korean Family Functioning Scale, Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile, and Parenting Stress Index. The data was analysed using t-test, one-way ANOVA, and the Pearson's correlation coefficients. Result: The results indicated that the depressed mothers (EPDS$\geq$ 10) had poorer sleep quality than the non-depressed mothers(EPDS < 10), reported shortened sleep duration, and experienced more daytime dysfunctions. Depressed mothers who had no job, did not drink coffee, and were primipara tended to report poorer sleep quality. There were significant correlation between poorer sleep quality and lower health promoting behaviors, higher family intimacy and lower family communication, and higher parenting stress among depressed mothers. Conclusion: Our findings support the view that depressed mothers' experiences of poor sleep are much higher than non-depressed mothers and multi-faced. Nurse professionals should screen for sleep problems in the depressed mothers with a different biopsychosocial and behavioral aspect from the non-depressed mothers in the late postpartum period.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the home literacy environment, mother's literacy belief and parenting efficacy in terms of the interaction which occurs during reading picture books between mothers and preschoolers. Questionnaires from 378 5-year-olds' mothers in Seoul and Kyunggi province were analysed. The findings from the validated structural equation model constructed with these variables were as follows. First, the home literacy environment, the mother's literacy beliefs and the mother's general parenting efficacy affected the quantity, and the quality of interaction whilst reading books with preschoolers. Second, the mother's efficacy in education and communication had a direct impact on the quantity of the interaction during reading books through the mediation of the home literacy environment, and had an indirect effect on the quality of the interaction whilst reading books, respectively. Third, the mother's efficacy in communication directly accounted for the quality of the interaction which occurs whilst reading books with children.
