Widely tunable diodes integrated with periodically sampled and chirped DBR(distributed Bragg reflector) and an EA(electroabsorption) modulator are analyzed dynamically using the improved largesinal time-domain model. The tuning characteristics of sampled- and chirped-grating DBR laser diodes are demonstrated theoretically. The results of the simulation agree well with those of the experiment. And the intensity-modulation properties of the laser diodes integrated with an EA modulator are calculated. It is shown that the external modulation has the lower frequency chirp by 1/20 for the same extinction ratio than the direct modulation, and also the short pulse train can be generated using the optical gating of an EA modulator.
We propose an architecture that reduces the power consumption and active area of such a modulator through a reduction in the number of active components and a simplification of the topology. The proposed architecture reduces the power consumption and active area by reducing the number of active components and simplifying the modulator topology. A novel second-order loop filter that uses a single operational amplifier resonator reduces the number of active elements and enhances the controllability of the transfer function. A trapezoidal-shape half-delayed return-to-zero feedback DAC eliminates the loop-delay compensation circuitry and improves pulse-delay sensitivity. These simple features of the modulator allow higher frequency operation and more design flexibility. Implemented in a 130 nm CMOS technology, the prototype modulator occupies an active area of $0.098mm^2$ and consumes 5.23 mW power from a 1.2 V supply. It achieves a dynamic range of 62 dB and a peak SNDR of 60.95 dB over a 15 MHz signal bandwidth with a sampling frequency of 780 MHz. The figure-of-merit of the modulator is 191 fJ/conversion-step.

In this paper, a X-band 50 W pulsed solid state power amplifier(SSPA) is designed and fabricated for radar systems. The SSPA consists of a driver amplifier, a high power amplifier, and a pulse modulator. The high power stage employes four 25 W GaAs FET to deliver 50 W at X-band. To meet the stringent target specification for the SSPA, we used a new hybrid pulse switching method, which combine the advantage of pulse modulation and bias switching method. The fabricated SSPA shows a power gain of 44.2 dB, an output power of 50 W over a 1.12 GHz bandwidth. Also, pulse droop < 1 dB meet the design goals and a rise/fall time is less than 12.45 ns. Fabricated X-band pulsed SSPA size is compact with overall size of $150{\times}105{\times}30\;mm^3$.

The 2.5GeV linac of the Pohang Light Source(PLS) is planed to be converted to a XFEL. The PAL XFEL requires a new 1.2-GeV linac that will be combined to the existing linac to increase a beam energy upto 3.7GeV. This stability is mainly determined by a low level RF drive system and klystron-modulators. The stability level of the modulator has to be improved 10 times better to meet the pulse stability of 0.02 %. The regulation methods such as traditional de-Qing and precision inverter charging technology are reviewed to find out suitable upgrade scheme of the modulators. In order to obtain electron beam of the consequently stability for XFEL linac, the pulse-to-pulse beam voltage regulation is less than +/-0.5%. To get the reliable stability of the modulator which is less than +/-0.2%, a charging section is improved in a modulator which has been operated with inverter power supply and de-Q'ing.

The traveling wave tube amplifier (TWTA), which can be applied to the Ka-band millimeter-wave multi-mode seeker, consists of an high voltage power supply(HVPS), a grid modulator, a command and control, and an RF assembly. We designed a power supply that generates a -17.9 kV high voltage by synchronizing the pulse repetition frequency(PRF) and power supply switching frequency(i.e. synchronization frequency), and a high-speed grid-switching modulator for RF pulse modulation. The TWTA, which is fabricated through miniaturization with a volume of 3.18 L, has high pulse switching characteristics of up to 18.5 ns. The maximum rise/fall time of the grid on/bias signal and peak power is more than 564.9 W. Moreover, an excellent spurious performance of -68.4 dBc or less was confirmed within the range of PRF and PRF/2.

Dynamic characteristics of widely tunable SGDBR/SSGDBR laser diodes integrated with an electroabsorption modulator is inestigated using an improved large-signal timef-domain model. First, wide tunning properties of a SGDBR laser diode and a SSGDBR laser diode are analyzed respectively and compared with each other. And, intensity-modulation characteristics of a SGDBR laser diode incorprating an electroabsorption modulator are investigated. It is shown that an external modulation has the lower frequency chirp by 1/20 for almost same extinction ratios than a direct modulation, and a nearly transform-limited pulse train can be generated using the optical gating of an electroabsorption modulator.
After making the light modulator using the BLN-PZT 9.0/65/35 specimen which has the slim-loop hysteresis characteristics and quadratic electro-optic characteristics, switching and spectral response characteristics were investigated. As the results of switching characteristics of the light modulator, it was found that the transmitted light intensity was modulated by both AC and pulse voltage. From the possibility of the selective transmission of the RGB(Red, Green, Blue) spectrum with electric field, the application for the light modulator, light shutter and color filter was expected.
The 2.0 GeV Pohang Light Source (PLS) is consisted of a full energy Linac and a storage ring. Four kicker magnets are installed in the storage ring tunnel to move the stored beam orbit in the storage ring closer to the injected beam from the beam transfer line. The injected beam then falls into the storage ring beam dynamic aperture. A kicker magnet modulator drives all four kicker magnets to maintain field balance and also synchronized kick of the beam. The kicker modulator can handle 2 GeV full energy beam. The kicker magnet modulator is installed in the storage ring tunnel and under stable operation. Specification of the kicker magnet modulator is ${\sim}6.0{\mu}s$ pulse-width, 200 ns flat-top width with ${\pm}0.2%$ regulation, ${\sim}24\;kA$ peak current, and 10 Hz repetition rate. Two thyratron switches (EEV CX-1536AX) are used in the system. In this article, design, and experimental results of the kicker magnet modulator are discussed.

A hybrid ${\Delta}{\Sigma}$ modulator for audio applications is presented in this paper. The pulse generator for digital-to-analog converter alleviates the requirement of the external clock jitter and calibrates the coefficient variation due to a process shift and temperature changes. The input resistor network in the first integrator offers a gain control function in a dB-linear fashion. Also, careful chopper stabilization implementation using return-to-zero scheme in the first continuous-time integrator minimizes both the influence of flicker noise and inflow noise due to chopping. The chip is implemented in a 0.13 ${\mu}m$ CMOS technology (I/O devices) and occupies an active area of 0.37 $mm^2$. The ${\Delta}{\Sigma}$ modulator achieves a dynamic range (A-weighted) of 97.8 dB and a peak signal-to-noise-plus-distortion ratio of 90.0 dB over an audio bandwidth of 20 kHz with a 4.4 mW power consumption from 3.3 V. Also, the gain of the modulator is controlled from -9.5 dB to 8.5 dB, and the performance of the modulator is maintained up to 5 nsRMS external clock jitter.

This paper describes a Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) modulator and demodulator and the experimented underwater data ommunication equipment to transfer the analog echo signal in real-time from an underwater vehicle to the mother ship. The system consists of an echo signal transfer unit equipped to the vehicle and an ultrasonic receiver equipped on the ship. The former includes an ultrasonic transceiver unit of 180kHz for echo detection and a continuous wave transmitter of 50kHz with a FSK modulator for echo transmission to the ship. The latter includes an ultrasonic receiver of 50kHz and the FSK demodulator. The results of experiment are as follows. 1. The characteristics of the FSK modulating and demodulating circuits designed with the use of C-MOS IC 4046 was good and confirmed its usefulness in underwater data communication system.2. The prototype ultrasonic transceiver unit shows profitable driving power while the pulse duration was short less than 3 msec, but it was found that the driving power is not sufficient while the long pulse duration or continuous wave is used. The gain of the ultrasonic receiver was 80 dB and the receiving bandwidth 700Hz (at - 3 dB point).3. It was found that the system designed by the author has some possibility to use in underwater echo transfer.4. At the FSK modulator, the widths of voltage and frequency which represent linearity were 3.5 V, 1600Hz, respectively, at the FSK demodulator 2.6 V, 700Hz, respectively.
