  • We have analyzed 255 data of the daily sunspot observations during the period of January 3 to December 31 in 1997 and present the daily relative sunspot numbers. During the 1997, the preliminary annual average of the relative sunspot numbers found to be 28.2 based on 9.7 distinct spots in a single group for 1.4 spot groups. According to the appearance of 366 spot groups, our analysis shows that the mean life time of spot group is about 4 day and 17.0 hours.

  • Among the sample of red giant stars in the globular clusters M3 and M13 whose CN bands $(3883{\AA})$ have been measured by various authors, the stars on the red giant evolutionary state are selected to have their CN band distributions. It is found that all stars brighter than Mv = 0, are CN-strong in M3, while all stars except IV-29 are CN-strong in M13. It hints that the onset of meridional mixing is related with the RGB bumps of the clusters.

  • We will discuss two-dimmensional spectrophotometry including long-slit spectroscopy and narrow-band imaging. The basic principles, applications, and techniques of observations and data reduction of spectroscopy and spectrophotometry for extended objects are described. This discussion will focus on practical long-slit spectroscopy using a Cassegrain spectrograph attached with 2 or 4m class telescopes and on imaging spectrophotometry using narrow-band interference filter sets. We will discuss scientific applications.

  • Infrared spectroscopic observations and their analysis revealed many physical and chemical characteristics of the various stars with dust envelopes. Especially, AGB stars and young stellar objects are believed to be major contributors of infrared radiation from galaxies. The wavelength of the peak spectral energy for typical galaxies is about $100{\mu}m$. Therefore, infrared spectral observations of galaxies provide important information for their overall properties. The qualitative analysis of the infrared spectra which are made of various stars and interstellar matter will be possible through a new population synthesis.

  • We have developed a Monte Carlo code, which solves the problem of radiative transfer in anisotropically scattering atmosphere. The radiative code is flexible in handlings of the system geometry, the distribution of scattering particles, and the source-particle geometry. This code treats the case of highly forward throwing scattering. As performance tests, we have compared the result of Monte Carlo calculations with that of Quasi-Diffusion method for a spherically symmetric cloud model.

COSMOLOGICAL APPLICATIONS OF MULTIPLE-IMAGE GRAVITATIONALLY LENSED QUASARS (다상 준항성 중력렌즈의 우주론적 응용)

  • Quasars at cosmological distances can be gravitationally lensed by galaxies into two or more images. The probability of this lensing and the angular separation between the images depend on the geometry and the expansion history of the universe as well as the lensing galaxies. The time delay between lensed images is also a direct indicator of the size of the universe. I review these cosmological applications of multiple-image gravitationally lensed quasars to determine or constrain the cosmological parameters.

CMBR FLUCTUATIONS IN THE BIANCHI TYPE I SPACETIME: THE EFFECTS OF GRAVITATIONAL WAVES (비앙키 I 형 시공간 속의 CMBR 흔들림: 중력파의 영향)

  • In the framework of linear perturbation theory and linear approximation of spacetime anisotropy, we investigated the formulae for the CMBR temperature anisotropy and fluctuation spectrum which have their origin in the primordial tensor perturbations of the perturbed Bianchi type I universe model. The resulting formulae were compared with those of the flat Friedmann model.

NEW EQUATIONS FOR THE ENTROPY INCREASE AND THE ANGULAR MOMENTUM-ENERGY EQUATION OF A BLACK HOLE (새로운 블랙흘 엔트로피 증가, 각운동량-에너지 추출 방정식)

  • In the earlier papers we analyzed the axisymmetric, nonstationary electrodynamics of the central black hole and a surrounding thin accretion disk in an active galactic nucleus. Based on those papers we analyze the axisymmetric, nonstationary force-free black hole magnetosphere and the motion of the plasma. We concentrate on deriving the totally new equations for the entropy incrrease and the angular momentum, energy extraction of the black hole.

  • In the earlier papers we analyzed the axisymmetric, nonstationary electrodynamics of the central black hole and a surrounding thin accretion disk in an active galactic nucleus. Based on those papers we analyze the axisymmetric, nonstationary black hole magnetosphere in this paper. We concentrate on deriving the ‘Grad-Shafranov equations’; both in the force-free and non-force-free cases. In the time-independent limit our equations naturally coincide with stationary equations as they should.

  • The problem of the collapse of a self gravitating disk is here considered. We show self-similar solutions for the above problem under a modified viscous parameter. Surface density depends on r$^m$ in the inner region, where m is -1.6. Therefore growing central mass goes on without mass inflow to the system.
