The experiments were conducted to evaluate safening effect of fenclorim (CGA 123'407, 4,6-dichloro-2-phenyl pyrimidine) against injuries of pretilachlor, butachlor, and benthiocarb in direct-seeded rice under flooded conditions. Pretilachlor and butachlor and benthiocarb reduced crop standing and inhibited growth of rice plants. However, premixture application of pretilachlor, butachlor or benthiocarb with fenclorim at 10-30 g ai/10a greatly reduced rice injury caused by the application of each herbicide alone and thus increased crop standing plant height and dry weight of rice plants compared to herbicide treatments alone.
Pre- and post-emergent control of Aneilema keisak was investigated in no-till paddy fields. In addition, a pot trial was conducted to determine use rates of the experimental post-emergent herbicide LGC40863. For pre-emergent control, butachlor(1,800g ai/ha), pretilachlor(600g ai/ha), pretilachlor plus pyrazosulfuron(300+18g ai/ha, respectively), thiobencarb plus bensulfuron(2,100+51g ai/ha, respectively), and molinate plus pyrazosulfuron(1,500+21g ai/ha, repectively) were treated at 20 days before seeding. Among the herbicides, molinate plus pyrazosulfuron was the least effective (23% control), while all other herbicides provided excellent(>95%) control of A. keisak. None of these herbicides caused rice phytotoxicity. However, rice yield in the plot treated with molinate plus pyrazosulfuron decreased about 50% due to poor A. keisak control. LGC40863 controlled A. keisak completely, by foliar application, across wide growth stages from the 5- to 15-leaf at 50g ai/ha in pot tests. In the field, treatment of LGC40863(30 to 50g ai/ha) provided >95% control of A. keisak when treated either at 15 days after transplanting or at non-productive tillering stage. Efficacy of 2,4-D and bentazon was insufficient when treated at non-productive tillering stage. These results suggest that, in no-till paddy fields, A. keisak is controlled by pre-emergent application of butachlor, pretilachlor, pretilachlor plus pyrazosulfuron, or thiobencarb plus bensulfuron, and by post-emergent application of LGC40863.
Field study was conducted to evaluate safening effect of fenclorim (4,6-dichloro-2-phenyl pyrimidine) against benthiocarb, butachlor, and pretilachlor injury in rice plants under vinyl-covered subirrigated seedbed. Combinated application of benthiocarb 210, and 315 g ai/10a with fenclorim 10 g ai/10a or higher concentration, butachlor 180, and 270 g ai/10a with fenclorim 20 g ai/10a or higher concentration, and pretilachlor 60, and 90 g ai/10a with fenclorim 30 g ai/10a reduced herbicide injury of rice, and thus increased standing, plant height, tillers, and dry weight of rice plants compared to no combined application of fenclorim.

BACKGROUND: This experiment was conducted to establish a simultaneous analysis method for 7 kinds of herbicides in 3 different classes having similar physicochemical property as diphenyl ether(bifenox and oxyfluorfen), dinitroaniline (ethalfluralin and trifluralin), and chloroacetamide (metolachlor, pretilachlor, and thenylchlor) in crops using GC-ECD/MS. METHODS AND RESULTS: All the 7 pesticide residues were extracted with acetone from representative samples of five raw products which comprised apple, green pepper, Kimchi cabbage, hulled rice and soybean. The extract was diluted with saline water and directly partitioned into n-hexane/dichloromethane(80/20, v/v) to remove polar co-extractives in the aqueous phase. For the hulled rice and soybean samples, n-hexane/acetonitrile partition was additionally employed to remove non-polar lipids. The extract was finally purified by optimized Florisil column chromatography. The analytes were separated and quantitated by GLC with ECD using a DB-1 capillary column. Accuracy and precision of the proposed method was validated by the recovery experiment on every crop samples fortified with bifenox, ethalfluralin, metolachlor, oxyfluorfen, pretilachlor, thenylchlor, and trifluralin at 3 concentration levels per crop in each triplication. CONCLUSION: Mean recoveries of the 7 pesticide residues ranged from 75.7 to 114.8% in five representative agricultural commodities. The coefficients of variation were all less than 10%, irrespective of sample types and fortification levels. Limit of quantitation (LOQ) of the analytes were 0.004 (etahlfluralin and trifluralin), 0.008 (metolachlor and pretilachlor), 0.006 (thenylchlor), 0.002 (oxyfluorfen), and 0.02 (bifenox) mg/kg as verified by the recovery experiment. A confirmatory technique using GC/MS with selected-ion monitoring was also provided to clearly identify the suspected residues. Therefore, this analytical method was reproducible and sensitive enough to determine the residues of bifenox, ethalfluralin, metolachlor, oxyfluorfen, pretilachlor, thenylchlor, and trifluralin in agricultural commodities.
Seventeen different herbicides were screened to select promising ones for the control of weeds, which may be used in paddy fields transplanted with 8 days old young rice seedlings. Four classes of herbicides were chosen and tested with seedlings grown under different cultivating conditions. Contact herbicides such as diphenyl-ether and oxadiazol showed severe growth retardation of rice seedlings. Carbamate class(dimepiperate), quinoline class (quinclorac), pyrazol class(pyrazolate), acid amide class(mefenacet and pretilachlor), addition of safener (pretilachlor+fenclorim and mefenacet+bensulfuron+dymuron) and unknown class (KC-7079) exhibited normal growth of seedlings. Sulfonyl urea herbicide class(cimosulfuron, bensulfuron, pyrazosulfuron), and oxarane class(tridiphane) showed the slight growth inhibition but recovered shortly.
There was a tendency that the growth inhibition of early growth due to herbicides was increased with increasing the amount of fertilizers. As a matter of fact, pretilachlor and pyrazolate increased the degree of injury with increasing the amount of fertilizers, and dimepiperate was actually safe regardless of the amount of fertilizer applied, while in case of bensulfuron, the injury become less when it was applied without fertilizers. As for organic matters, dimepiperate and pyrazolate were rather safe without organic matter, while pretilachlor and bensulfuron become really safe with the application of organic matter more than 1,000 kg/10a.
Various herbicides were applied to the young rice seedling from which endosperm were removed and their effects were determined at 40 days after transplanting. Generally, growth was retarded, but the number of tillers was not effected. Application of bensulfuron and pretilachlor showed slight growth inhibition compared to dimepiperate and pyrazolate. Injury due to herbicide application was dependent on the transplanting depth. Injury was severe when pretilachlor and pyrazolate were applied to rice transplanted 0 and 4cm deep, respectively. However, bensulfuron showed much injury regardless of transplanting depths with the tendency of general growth retardation. Dimepiperate was fairly safe at all transplanting depths. The application of herbicides at 3 and 6 DAT showed higher injury than that at g and 12 DAT. The degree of injury was severe when pretilachlor and bensulfuron were applied.
Maintaining the water level at 5cm depth showed less decreasing in number of tiller and dry weight as compared to 1 and 3cm depths when Bensulfuron and Pretilachlor were applied. The drainage more than 5cm as water level everyday caused the growth inhibition when Bensulfuron and Pretilachlor were used, while Dimepiperate was rather safe.
This study was carried out to investigate the ACCase inhibiting herbicide resistant Echinochloa oryzicola collected in a Honam rice field and to investigate the control of E. oryzicola in directly seeded paddy rice field. The study result showed that about 44% of the 67 biotypes collected in the rice field in Honam region were resistant to ACCase-inhibiting herbicides. The efficacy of several chemical herbicides on these resistant E. oryzicola biotypes was evaluated according to their application timings. Among herbicides applied 4 days before seeding, pretilachlor, butachlor, oxadiazon, oxadiargyl, oxadiazon+pretilachlor, and fentrazamide+oxadiargyl, provided 95% or higher control of the resistant E. oryzicola biotypes. Among the herbicides applied 10 days after seeding, bromobutide+fentrazamide+imazosulfuron, benzobicyclon+fentrazamide+imazosulfuron, pyrazosulfuron-ethyl+thiobencarb, fentrazamide+imazosulfuron, bromobutide+imazosulfuron+mefenacet and bromobutide+imazosulfuron+pyraclonil provided ${\geq}95%$ control of the weeds. Bromobutide+imazosulfuron+mefenacet and bromobutide+pyrazosulfuron-ethyl+pyriminobac-methyl, applied 15 days after seeding, provided ${\geq}95$ and 90% control of the weeds. Foliar application of cyhalofop-butyl+propanil at 30 days after seeding provided ${\geq}90%$ control of the weeds. In addition, oxaziclomefone provided ${\geq}90%$ control for 40 days after soil application. These results show that E. oryzicola biotypes resistant to ACCase-inhibiting herbicides could be effectively controlled in directly seeded rice in submerged paddy fields using single or tank-mixed chemical herbicides currently available on the market.
