  • The importance of science education for cultivating the competencies required by an intelligent information society is gradually being strengthened. The government's roles and responsibilities for science education are stipulated by laws and policies in Korea. In order to systematically support science education, continuous monitoring of related policies is essential. This study aims to develop indicators that can be used to systematically and continuously monitor the national policies on science education in Korea. To achieve this goal, we first derive the framework for the indicators that has two dimensions (learner and science education context) and three categories (input, process, and outcome) from literature reviews. In order to derive the components and subcomponents of the indicators, the contents of science education-related indicators developed in Korea or abroad were reviewed. In order to verify the suitability and validity of the framework and components of the initial indicators, a two-round Delphi method was conducted with 25 expert participants with five different professions in science education. Finally, three components of the 'input' category (student characteristics, teacher characteristics, and educational infrastructure), three components of the 'process' category (science curriculum implementation, science educational contents and programs implementation, and teacher professional development program implementation), and five components of the 'outcome' category (science competency, participation and action, affective achievement, cognitive achievement, and satisfaction) were derived. An instrument to collect data from students, teachers, and institutions was developed based on the components and subcomponents, and content validity and internal consistency of the instrument were analyzed. Korea's Science Education Indicators developed in this study can comprehensively measure the current status of science education and is expected to contribute to a more efficient and effective science education policy planning and implementation.

  • This study conducted a survey 212 adolescents in multi-cultural family to measure the level of their discrimination experience and acculturation stress by comparing with social integration analysis frame of D. Heater and examined how it affects them to national identity. Followings are the main results of this study. First, after measuring the discrimination experience level of those surveyed, their average was a bit higher than the normal level, showing 2.63(SD=.72), and their acculturation stress was 2.48(SD=.65) which is average. Second, their level of national identity showed 2.16(SD=.57), which was lower than the normal level, and there was statistically a meaningful difference between the groups depending on their academic level, parents' marital status, mother's Korean ability. Third, the factors that affected in national identity were in the order of their discrimination experience(${\beta}$=-.305), parents' marital status(${\beta}$=.286), acculturation stress(${\beta}$=-.225), academic level(${\beta}$=.186), mother's Korean ability(${\beta}$=.173). Based on these results, several ways are suggested to improve national identity of adolescents in multi-cultural family.

  • Emission Trading (ET) among Annex I countries as expounded in Kyoto mechanism can be an effective mean to control Greenhouse Gases(GHGs), particularly $CO_2$ emissions from fossil fuels. For the international ET to be an effective tool to reduce the global emissions, however, it presupposes that there are no carbon leakage, i.e. Annex I emitters will purchase emission permits if emitting above caps, rather than importing emission-intensive goods from non-Annex I countries thus inducing the foreigners to emit instead. The extent to which a country leaks carbon through trade can be revealed by its bilateral balance of current accounts and related Balance of Emissions Embodied in Trade (BEET) supplemented by Emission Terms of Trade (ETT). Earlier studies on BEET and ETT relied on few selected countries in a partial equilibrium context, Korea being treated as insignificant though she is not a minor emitter. This paper is an attempt to examine BEET in the global CGE framework and to compare its structural difference across countries, with a special emphasis on South Korea.

  • After entering a more stable growth phase since the 2000s, new urban development has become smaller and fragmented and interiors of existing cities are aging and becoming underutilized. Therefore, using vacant and underutilized land in urban area has high value in national urban policies in terms of compact urban development and circular land use management. To do so, it is necessary to develop scientific research methods and tools to better understand the characteristics and potential of vacant and underutilized land. The main goals of the study are as follows. First, this research aims to develop a pilot system for analysis and assessment of abandoned, vacant, and underutilized space. The pilot system will act as a scientific policy support measure to systematically identify vacant and underutilized space. Busan Metropolitan City, with a variety of vacant and underutilized space, was selected as the case study area. The second goal is to develop a planning support system for abandoned, vacant and underutilized Land using open source GIS software, uDig. GIS based decision support systems or planning support systems to resolve spatial problem is not a new innovation, but using open source GIS provides new opportunities and potential. To conclude, the research will derive implications for future work.

  • Beam hardening artifact happens in the CT image. when a PET/CT is conducted while there is a metallic dental implant. The artifact appears in the CT image can affect the PET image. When the patient with head and neck cancer has a metallic dental implant, Beam hardening artifact which was taken in th CT image can change the PET image and SUV value. Therefore, by Quantitative measure of the SUV according to the change in HU by the metallic dental implant, the appropriacy in the clinical application was assessed. The records of 47 patients with PET/CT August 2011. For the analysis, 2 region of interest were defined in area where CT and PET image. As a result of the experiment, if there in an implant, the HU and the SUV increased and there existed a statistically significant difference(p<0.01). Although this level of increase was not large compared with that in the patient who have no metallic dental implant, when a person has head and neck cancer, it is even more likely to be overestimated when diagnosing the cancer. When conducting PET/CT for the patient who have head and neck cancer, the physical biological parts should be considered in order not to make an error in decoding.

  • Since Google launched a prediction service for influenza-like illness(ILI), studies on ILI prediction based on web search data have proliferated worldwide. In this regard, this study aims to build short-term predictive models for ILI in Korea using ILI and web search data and measure the performance of the said models. In these proposed ILI predictive models specific to Korea, ILI surveillance data of Korea CDC and Korean web search data of Google and Naver were used along with the ARIMA model. Model 1 used only ILI data. Models 2 and 3 added Google and Naver search data to the data of Model 1, respectively. Model 4 included a common query used in Models 2 and 3 in addition to the data used in Model 1. In the training period, the goodness of fit of all predictive models was higher than 95% ($R^2$). In predictive periods 1 and 2, Model 1 yielded the best predictions (99.98% and 96.94%, respectively). Models 3(a), 4(b), and 4(c) achieved stable predictability higher than 90% in all predictive periods, but their performances were not better than that of Model 1. The proposed models that yielded accurate and stable predictions can be applied to early warning systems for the influenza pandemic in Korea, with supplementary studies on improving their performance.

  • Criminal profiling is a effective and efficient measure for enhancing industrial security of casino business. Particularly, developing criminal profiling of deviant behaviors in casino will help security management to become more effective and efficient in practical ways. Unfortunately, however, there is lack of empirical profiling study in this regard. To fill the vacuum of literature on this topic, this study was purported to create offender profiles of different types of deviant behaviors in casino based on various theories and techniques in criminal profiling literature, such as investigative psychology, linkage analysis, and behavioral evidence analysis. To fulfill the purposes, this study collected behavioral evidence from 90 casino security officers in South Korea. Offenders' behavioral evidence was analyzed to develop offender profiles of seven different types of deviant behaviors, and then the profiles were compared with each profiles that security officers focus on to identify offenders during their work hours. Results showed that, first, there were unique profiles of each type of seven different categories of deviant behaviors in terms of offenders' ways of speaking and acting, their appearance and attitudes. In addition, this study found that there were some amount of gaps between actual offenders' profiles and profiles that security officers have in mind. Based on the results, this study provided policy implications in terms of managing casino industrial security, education and training for security officers, and future study on casino security.
