  • Limit equilibrium analysis and finite difference analysis were used to evaluate slope stability in the in Gohan, Korea, which is affected by large-scale tensile cracks and uplift. There is a thick colluvial layer in the study area and predicting ground behavior is problematic because the presence of clay makes it difficult to determine the strength parameters of the soil. Consequently, a numerical model able to reflect the collapse properties of the site was required that applied the modified boundary layer model and calculated the strength parameters using back analysis. The numerical simulation results that consider the strength parameter one does with the present situation the establishment of the pile is completed, and the simulation is able to asses ground stability in complex terrain in a reliable manner. Also the somewhat it judges with the fact that it will be able to provide the fundamental data which secures the stability of the segment where it is unstable.

  • In this paper, the effects of nonlinear soft clay on dynamic embedment of offshore pipeline were investigated. Seabed embedment by pipe-soil interactions has impacts on the structural boundary conditions for various subsea structures such as pipeline, riser, pile, and many other systems. A number of studies have been performed to estimate real soil behavior, but their estimation of seabed embedment has not been fully identified and there are still many uncertainties. In this regards, comparison of embedment between field survey and existing empirical models has been performed to identify uncertainties and investigate the effect of nonlinear soil parameter on dynamic embedment. From the comparison, it is found that the dynamic embedment with installation effects based on nonlinear soil model have an influence on seabed embedment. Therefore, the pipe embedment under dynamic condition by nonlinear parameters of soil models was investigated by Dynamic Embedment Factor (DEF) concept, which is defined as the ratio of the dynamic and static embedment of pipeline, in order to overcome the gap between field embedment and currently used empirical and numerical formula. Although DEF through various researches is suggested, its range is too wide and it does not consider dynamic laying effect. It is difficult to find critical parameters that are affecting to the embedment result. Therefore, the study on dynamic embedment factor by soft clay parameters of nonlinear soil model was conducted and the sensitivity analyses about parameters of nonlinear soil model were performed as well. The tendency on dynamic embedment factor was found by conducting numerical analyses using OrcaFlex software. It is found that DEF was influenced by shear strength gradient than other factors. The obtained results will be useful to understand the pipe embedment on soft clay seabed for applying offshore pipeline designs such as on-bottom stability and free span analyses.

  • The use of energy pile foundation has increased for economic utilization of geothermal energy. In particular, coil-shaped ground heat exchanger (GHE) is preferred to the conventional U-shaped exchanger to ensure better efficiency of heat exchange rate. This paper presents a numerical and experimental study on the heat transfer behavior of PHC energy piles. Field thermal performance tests (TPTs) were conducted for the PHC energy piles installed in a partially saturated weathered granite soil deposit, in which two types of GHEs were considered: W and coil shaped GHEs. Besides, three-dimensional finite element analyses were also conducted, and the results were compared with the experimental results. According to the results of TPT and numerical analyses, the coil shaped GHE showed 10~15% higher heat exchange rate than the W type GHE in the PHC energy piles.

  • A microcell $UO_2$ pellet, as an accident-tolerant fuel pellet, is being developed to enhance the accident tolerance of nuclear fuels under accident conditions as well as the fuel performance under normal operation conditions. Improved capture-ability for highly radioactive and corrosive fission product (Cs and I) is the distinct feature of a ceramic microcell $UO_2$ pellet, and the enhanced pellet thermal conductivity is that of a metallic microcell $UO_2$ pellet. The fuel temperature can be effectively decreased by enhanced thermal conductivity. In this study, the material concepts of metallic and ceramic microcell $UO_2$ pellets were designed, and the fabrication process of microcell $UO_2$ pellets embodying the designed concept was developed. We successfully implemented the microcell $UO_2$ pellets and produced microcell $UO_2$ pellets. In addition, an assessment of the out-of-pile properties of a microcell $UO_2$ pellet was performed, and the in-reactor performance and behavior of the developed microcell pellets were evaluated through a Halden irradiation test. According to the expectations, the excellent performance of the microcell $UO_2$ pellets was confirmed by the online measurement data of the Halden irradiation test.

  • AREVA NP (Courbevoie, Paris, France) is actively developing several enhanced accident-tolerant fuels cladding concepts ranging from near-term evolutionary (Cr-coated zirconium alloy cladding) to long-term revolutionary (SiC/SiC composite cladding) solutions, relying on its worldwide teams and partnerships, with programs and irradiations planned both in Europe and the United States. The most advanced and mature solution is a dense, adherent chromium coating on zirconium alloy cladding, which was initially developed along with the CEA and EDF in the French joint nuclear R&D program. The evaluation of the out-of-pile behavior of the Cr-coated cladding showed excellent results, suggesting enhanced reliability, enhanced operational flexibility, and improved economics in normal operating conditions. For example, because chromium is harder than zirconium, the Cr coating provides the cladding with a significantly improved wear resistance. Furthermore, Cr-coated samples exhibit extremely low corrosion kinetics in autoclave and prevents accelerated corrosion in harsh environments such as in water with 70 ppm Li leading to improved operational flexibility. Finally, AREVA NP has fabricated a physical vapor deposition prototype machine to coat full-length cladding tubes. This machine will be used for the manufacturing of full-length lead test rods in commercial reactors by 2019.

  • Presently, domestic SCP method with low replacement ratio is required as alternative in order to overcome the profitability of the sand resource because of the deficiency phenomenon of the sand resource by the actual condition design and construction is made by SCP method with low replacement ratio more than 70% for the port construction in the safe side. Sand compaction pile(SCP) method has been mainly used to improve the properties of soft clay or loose sandy ground. In design of SCP at soft clay ground, it is very important to determine the stress concentration ratio of composite ground relevant to the area replacement ratio. In this study, 2-dimensional FEM analyses were carried out to evaluate the stress concentration ratio of composite ground depending upon the area replacement ratio. When the interpretation result replacement ratio was 30%, the stress assigned rate showed and as the replacement ratio was high, the stress assigned rate according to the sinkage showed the low stress assigned rate.

  • This study described the relationship of settlement-lateral displacement and settlement-heaving according to the DCM type using the model test results, in order to evaluate the behavioral characteristics of the soft ground improved with DCM. As a result, it was found that the total settlement of the model ground was relatively small in the soft ground, to which the DCM was applied, and the settlement was less in the order of the grid type, wall type, and pile type under the same load conditions. This trend was also the same for the lateral displacement and heaving. In addition, the relationship between settlement and lateral displacement of soft ground was analyzed to be similar to that of previous study (Leroueil et al., 1990). Therefore, the DCM of grid type was evaluated to be superior to other types for lateral flow and heaving in the improvement effect of soft ground.

  • An analytical solution method capable of determining the geometric configuration and developed tensile forces of mooring lines associated with fixed plate/pile or drag anchors has been developed. The solution method, satisfying complete equilibrium conditions, is capable of analyzing multi-segmented mooring lines that can consist of either chains, cables, or synthetic wires embedded in layered seafloor soils. The solution method utilizes a systematic iterative search method based on specific boundary conditions. This paper describes the principles associated with the development of the solution for the mooring line analysis. Comparisons of predictions with results from a series of field tests of mooring lines on various types of drag anchors are also described. Comparisons include the tension in anchor, the length of mooring line on the bottom, and the angle of mooring line at the water surface buoy. The results indicate that the analytical solution method is capable of predicting the behavior of mooring lines with high degree of accuracy.

  • Although the Granular Compaction Pile (GCP) has been used for many decades, several failures still occur such as bulging, shear failure and other phenomena, indicating that more refined study is needed. The main objective of the study is to evaluate the stress concentration ratio for both area replacement ratio and shear strength of soil through literature review and numerical analysis. Numerical analysis using the finite element program ABAQUS has been performed for the composite ground with GCP. The behavior stress and settlement of composite ground have been analyzed for both the area replacement ratio (10~40%) and shear strength of soil (25~75 kPa). As a result of numerical analysis, as the soil strength and area replacement ratio increased, the average stree related coefficient and stress concentration ratio for depth tended to decrease, and stress related coefficient of upper layer tend to decrease equally, but the stress concentration ratio decreased. Therefore, tendency that the value in th upper layer differs from the value in other depths was displayed. Care should be taken because it is possible to make mistakes in designing the entire composite ground with the values measured in the upper layer. Also, the settlement reduction factor was compared with the existing equation and numerical analysis. And the value obatined from the existing equation and numerical analysis are similar.
