  • The parabolic equation technique provides an excellent model to describe the wave phenomena when there exists a predominant direction of propagation. The model handles the square root wave number operator in paraxial direction. Realization of the pseudo-differential square root operator is the essential part of the parabolic equation method for its numerical accuracy. The wide-angled approximation of the operator is made based on the Pade series expansion, where the branch line rotation scheme can be combined with the original Pade approximation to stabilize its computational performance for complex modes. The Galerkin integration has been employed to discretize the depth-dependent operator. The benchmark tests involving the half-infinite space, the range independent and dependent environment will validate the implemented numerical model.

  • A wide-angle approximation in the parabolic equation method is presented to calculate wave transformation in the shallow water. The parabolic approximation to the mild-slope equation is obtain-ed by the use of a splitting matrix, which leads to a generalized equation in form. A numerical model based on a finite difference scheme is presented and computational results are provided to test the model against the laboratory measurements of circular and elliptical shoals. The numerical results are in good agreement with most of experimental data. Therefore it can be concluded that the model shows greater capability to reproduce the characteristics of waves in the refractive focus.

  • This paper shows the analytic error caused by the inconsistency of the approximation order between the non local boundary condition (NLBC) and the parabolic governing equation. To obtain the analytic error, we first transform the NLBC to the half space domain using plane wave analysis. Then, the analytic error is derived on the boundary between the true numerical domain and the half space domain equivalent to the NLBC. The derived analytic error is physically expressed as the artificial reflection. We examine the characteristic of the analytic error for the grazing angle, the approximation order of the PE or the NLBC. Our main contribution is to present the analytic method of error estimation and the application limit for the high order parabolic equation and the NLBC.

  • Based on mild slope equation and parabolic approximation the forward diffraction of monochromatic waves by a straight breakwater are studied numerically. The characteristics and effects of stem wave along breakwater and the relations between the stem wave and incident wave angle are discussed.

  • We analyze the spectral collocation approximation for a parabolic partial integrodifferential equations(PIDE) with a weakly singular kernel. The space discretization is based on the spectral collocation method and the time discretization is based on Crank-Nicolson scheme with a graded mesh. We obtain the stability and second order convergence result for fully discrete scheme.

  • By applying the Landau-type transformation, we transform a Stefan problem with nonlinear free boundary condition into a system consisting of a parabolic equation and the ordinary differential equations. Fully discrete finite element method is developed to approximate the solution of a system of a parabolic equation and the ordinary differential equations. We derive optimal orders of convergence of fully discrete approximations in $L_2,\;H^1$ and $H^2$ normed spaces.

  • In this study, novel approximate form of the square-root operator of three dimensional acoustic Parabolic Equation (3D PE) is proposed using a rational approximant for two variables. This form has two advantages in comparison with existing approximation studies of the square-root operator. One is the wide-angle capability. The proposed form has wider angle accuracy to the inclination angle of ${\pm}62^{\circ}$ from the range axis of 3D PE at the bearing angle of $45^{\circ}$, which is approximately three times the angle limit of the existing 3D PE algorithm. Another is that the denominator of our approximate form can be expressed into the product of one-dimensional operators for depth and cross-range. Such a splitting form is very preferable in the numerical analysis in that the 3D PE can be easily transformed into the tridiagonal matrix equation. To confirm the capability of the proposed approximate form, comparative study of other approximation methods is conducted based on the phase error analysis, and the proposed method shows best performance.

  • In this paper, we develop discontinuous Galerkin methods with penalty terms, namaly symmetric interior penalty Galerkin methods to solve nonlinear parabolic equations. By introducing an appropriate projection of u onto finite element spaces, we prove the optimal convergence of the fully discrete discontinuous Galerkin approximations in ${\ell}^2(L^2)$ normed space.

  • Hydraulic model experiments were conducted fur a series of regular and uni-directional irregular waves propagating over a submerged elliptic shoal. Two different sets of experiments have been studied; one considers regular wave transformation with no breaking, and the other considers uni-directional irregular wave with partial breaking on top of the shoal. The numerical experiments are also performed using a numerical model based on the parabolic approximation equation. The result of the numerical experiments are compared with that of hydraulic experiments.

  • In this paper, a new two dimensional (2D) analytical model of a Dual Material Gate tunnel field effect transistor (DMG TFET) is presented. The parabolic approximation technique is used to solve the 2-D Poisson equation with suitable boundary conditions. The simple and accurate analytical expressions for surface potential and electric field are derived. The electric field distribution can be used to calculate the tunneling generation rate and numerically extract tunneling current. The results show a significant improvement of on-current and reduction in short channel effects. Effectiveness of the proposed method has been confirmed by comparing the analytical results with the TCAD simulation results.
