In the present study, glucose-sensitive hydrogels using phenylboronic acid (PBA) without glucose oxidase and catalase were prepared. The swelling-shrinking behavior of the hydrogel according to the variation of pH and glucose and ionic concentrations was investigated. The swelling ratio of the hydrogel containing PBA increased with increasing the glucose concentration and the volume was very sensitively varied with the pH. However, the ionic concentration did not change significantly the relative swelling ratio on the hydrogel, indicating that the hydrogel was dimensionally stable.
Drug release experiments were performed based on pH-sensitive swelling behaviors of polymethacrylic acid. 5-Fluorouracil as a nonionic model drug revealed release patterns depending solely on pH-dependent swelling kinetics of polymethacrylic acid. In contrast, release of propranolol hydrochloride as a cationic model drug was significantly affected by ionic drug-polymer interaction as well as the swelling kinetics. Accordingly, a zero-order release pattern was obtained at pH 7, which was distinguished from the general matrix type drug release pattern.
pH-sensitive P(MAA-co-PEGMA) hydrogel particles were prepared and their feasibility as smart delivery carriers for cosmetic ingredients was evaluated. P(MAA-co-PEGMA) hydrogel particles having an average size of approx. $2{\mu}m$ were synthesized via dispersion photopolymerization. There was a drastic change in the swelling ratio of P(MAA-co-PEGMA) particles at a pH of around 5 due to the ionization of MAA in the hydrogel and as the amount of MAA in the hydrogel increased, the swelling ratio increased at a pH above 5. The P(MAA-co-PEGMA) hydrogel particles showed a pH-sensitive release behavior. Thus, at pH 4 almost none of the albumin permeated through the skin while at pH 6 relatively high skin permeability was obtained. The albumin loaded in the P(MAA-co-PEGMA) hydrogel particles was hardly degraded in the presence of pepsin and its stability was maintained.
A hydrogel, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-N,N'-dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide), sensitive to both pH and temperature was synthesized and characterized for its welling behavior, lower critical solution temperature (LCST), and its appearance. The hydrogel with 5 mol% of N,N'-diemthylaminopropyl methacrylamide (DMAPMAAm) increased its volume phenomenonally in a lower pH range (ph 1~8) even at temperature ($37^{\circ}C$ and $40^{\circ}C$) higher than LCST. This behavior was unique compared to the temperature -sensitive hydrogel which did not exhibit any swelling in the same pH range. The hydrogel with 20 mol% of DMAPMAAm was swollen significantly at a higher pH of 12. With pH decrease from 12 to 2 water content in the gel increased from 38.8 wt% and 60.6 wt%, and 90.8 wt% for 5 mol% and 20 mol% gel, respectively. The transition pH that pH effect overwhelmed temperature effect occurred at a lower pH for a higher temperature ($40^{\circ}C$) and a lower mol% (5 mol%) of DMAPMAAm. Transparency and LCST of the gel increased with higher DMAPMAAm mol%.
Hydrogels of semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) were prepared by two step reactions. Dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAM) and poly(ethylene glycol)-dimethacrylate (PEGDM) were copolymerized to yield hydrogels, and then acrylic acid (AA) monomer were adsorbed in the hydrogels followed by polymerization of AA to produce semi-IPNs. The swelling behavior of semi-IPNs depends largely on pH of medium, showing that the degree of swelling of the semi-IPNs exhibits a minimum at pH 6.0. It is observed that the elastic modulus of semi-IPNs is closely related to its swelling behavior.
pH-sensitive hydrogels were studied as a drug carrier for the protection of insulin from the acidic environment of the stomach before releasing it in the small intestine. In this study, hydrogels based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) networks grafted with methacrylic acid (MAA) or acrylic acid (AAc) were prepared via a two-step process. PEO hydrogels were prepared by ${\gamma}-ray $ irradiation (radiation dose: 50 kGy, dose rate: 7.66 kGy/h), grafted by either MAA or AAc monomers onto the PEO hydrogels and finally underwent irradiation (radiation dose: 520 kGy, dose rate: 2.15 kGy/h). These grafted hydrogels showed a pH-sensitive swelling behavior. The grafted hydrogels were used as a carrier for the drug delivery systems for the controlled release of insulin. Drug-loaded hydrogels were placed in simulated gastric fluid (SGF, pH 1.2) for 2 hr and then in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF, pH 6.8). The in vitro drug release behaviors of these hydrogels were examined by quantification analysis with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer.

The micellization behavior and the metal-nanoparticle formation in PDEAEMA-b-PHEGMA double hydrophilic block copolymers are investigated. The hydrophobic PDEAEMA block is pH-sensitive: at low pH it can be protonated and it becomes hydrophilic, leading to molecular solubility, whereas at higher pH micelles are formed; the behavior is studied by DLS, NMR and AFM. In these micellar nanoreactors, metal nanorystals nucleate and grow upon reduction with sizes in the range of a few nm's as observed by TEM and XRD. Similarly, metal nanocrystals can be formed within pH-sensitive microgels (${\sim}250nm$ in diameter), synthesized by emulsion copolymerization of DEAEMA, which also exhibit reversible swelling properties in water by adjusting the pH.
A interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) hydrogel, composed of chitosan (CS) and poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) was prepared, which exhibited electrical sensitive behavior. The swelling behavior of the CS/PDADMAC SIPN hydrogel was studied by immersion of the gel into various pH buffer solutions, and their stimuli response in electric fields also investigated. In order to clarify the relationship between the equilibrium swelling ratio and bending behavior of the SIPN hydrogels, the state of water in the SIPN hydrogel was also investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).

The pH sensitive hydrogels composed of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) and acryloyl phenylalanine (APA) were prepared by redox polymerization using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker. Anti-inflammatory and analgesic agent, Keterolac Tromethamine (KT), was loaded successfully into poly(NIPA-co-APA) copolymeric hydrogels by swelling equilibrium method. To understand the nature of drug in the polymeric matrix, the newly synthesized drug loaded poly(NIPA-co-APA) copolymeric hydrogels were characterized by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique result indicates the spherical smooth surface of the hydrogels. The drug (KT) releasing nature of the poly(NIPA-co-APA) hydrogels was studied in pH 1.2 and 7.4. Effects of drug loading, crosslinking agent, pH and the ionic strength of the external medium on swelling of hydrogels were also investigated.
Acrylate-terminated poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) macromer was prepared by the reaction of PEG with acryloyl chloride. Photopolymerization of PEG macromer resulted in the formation of cross-linked PEG network. Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) based on PEG and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was obtained via template polymerization of AA to the PEG network by UV curing. The swelling degree of the IPNs hydrogel increased with an increase of pH value due to the association-dissociation between carboxylic acid of PAA and either of PEG through hydrogen bounding. The swelling-deswelling behavior proceeded reversibly for the IPNs upon changing pH. Release of indomethacin from the IPNs demonstrated "on-off" regulation with pH fluctuation.
