  • This paper presents a linear shift-invariant system euqivalent to morphological dilation for a memoryless uniform source in the sense of the power spectral density function, and comares it with dialtion. This equivalent LSI system is found through spectral decomposition and, for dilation and with windwo size L, it is shown to be a finite impulse response filter composed of L-1 delays, L multipliers and three adders. Th ecoefficients of the equivalent systems are tabulated. The comparisons of dilation and its equivalent LSI system show that probability density functions of the output sequences of the two systems are quite different. In particular, the probability density functon from dilation of an independent and identically distributed uniform source over the unit interval (0, 1) shows heavy probability in around 1, while that from the equivalent LSI system shows probability concentration around themean vlaue and symmetricity about it. This difference is due to the fact that dilation is a non-linear process while the equivalent system is linear and shift-ivariant. In the case that dikation is fabored over LSI filters in subjective perforance tests, one of the factors can be traced to this difference in the probability distribution.

  • This paper presents methods to improve performance of the power supply system in a NASA deep space explorer. In the Stirling engine driven reciprocating Brushless DC (BLDC) generator, the accurate position information of the prime mover is important to diagnose the performance of the engine and prevent distortion of the output power. Since sensors to detect the position are fragile and unreliable, and conventional sensorless techniques have drawbacks in the low speed region, a novel sensorless position detection technique for the prime mover has been proposed and verified. Another major issue of the generator for the spacecraft is power density maximization. The mass of the power system is important to the mass of the satellite. Therefore, the components of the spacecraft should be lightweight. Conventional rectification methods cannot achieve the maximum power possible due to non-optimal current waveforms. The optimal current waveform for maximizing power density and minimizing machine size and weight in a nonsinusoidal power supply system has been derived, incorporated in a control system, and verified by simulation work.

  • In this work, we report extraction of the density-of-states (DOS) in polymer-based organic thin film transistors through the multi-frequency C-V spectroscopy. Extracted DOS is implemented into a TCAD simulator and obtained a consistent output curves with non-linear characteristics considering the contact resistance effect. We employed a Schottky contact model for the source and drain to fully reproduce a strong nonlinearity with proper physical mechanisms in the output characteristics even under a very small drain biases. For experimental verification of the model and extracted DOS, 2 different OTFTs (P3HT and PQT-12) are employed. By controlling the Schottky contact model parameters in the TCAD simulator, we accurately reproduced the nonlinearity in the output characteristics of OTFT.

  • In low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems, probabilistic information are exchanged between an LDPC decoder and a MIMO detector. TheMIMO detector has to calculate probabilistic values for each bit which can be very complex. In [1], the authors presented a class of linear block codes named low-density MIMO codes (LDMC) which can reduce the complexity of MIMO detector. However, this code only supports the outer-iterations between the MIMO detector and decoder, but does not support the inner-iterations inside the LDPC decoder. In this paper, a new approach to construct LDMC codes is introduced. The new LDMC codes can be encoded efficiently at the transmitter side and support both of the inner-iterations and outer-iterations at the receiver side. Furthermore they can achieve the design rates and perform very well over MIMO channels.

  • Resonant converters are well suited for induction heating (IH) applications due to their advantages such as efficiency and power density. The control systems of these appliances should provide smooth and wide power control with fewer losses. In this paper, a simple phase locked loop (PLL) based variable duty cycle (VDC) pulse density modulation (PDM) power control scheme for use in class-D inverters for IH loads is proposed. This VDC PDM control method provides a wide power control range. This control scheme also achieves stable and efficient Zero-Voltage-Switching (ZVS) operation over a wide load range. Analysis and modeling of an IH load is done to perform a time domain simulation. The design and output power analysis of a class-D inverter are done for both the conventional pulse width modulation (PWM) and the proposed PLL based VDC PDM methods. The control principles of the proposed method are described in detail. The validity of the proposed control scheme is verified through MATLAB simulations. The PLL loop maintains operation closer to the resonant frequency irrespective of variations in the load parameters. The proposed control scheme provides a linear output power variation to simplify the control logic. A prototype of the class-D inverter system is implemented to validate the simulation results.

  • Humidity calibration for a temperature-stable quartz oscillator (TSQO) was investigated to exclude the influences of relative humidity on the TSQO output in order to use the corresponding devices outdoors. The TSQO output is a voltage that is inversely proportional to the electric impedance of the quartz oscillator, which depends on the viscosity and density of the measured gas. The TSQO output was humidity calibrated using its humidity dependence, which was obtained by varying the relative humidity (RH) from 0 to 100 RH% while other conditions were kept constant. The humidity dependencies of the TSQO output were fit by a linear function. Subtracting the change in the TSQO output induced by the change in humidity, calculated with the function from the experimentally measured TSQO output for a range of 0-100RH%, eliminated the influence of humidity on the TSQO output. The humidity calibration succeeded in reducing the fluctuations of the TSQO output from 0.4-3% to 0.1-0.3% of the average values for a range of 0-100RH%, at constant temperatures. The necessary stability of the TSQO output for application in hydrogen sensors was below one-third of the change observed for a hydrogen leakage of 1 vol.% hydrogen concentration, corresponding to 0.33% of the change in each background. Therefore, the results in this study indicate that the present humidity calibration effectively suppresses the influence of humidity, for the TSQO output for use as an outdoor hydrogen sensor.

  • A GaAs power metal semiconductor field effect transistor (MESFET) operating at a voltage as low as 3.3V has been developed with the best performance for digital handheld phone. The device has been fabricated on an epitaxial layer with a low-high doped structure grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The MESFET, fabricated using $0.8{\mu}m$ design rule, showed a maximum drain current density of 330 mA/mm at $V_{gs}$ =0.5V and a gate-to-drain breakdown volt-age of 28 V. The MESFET tested at a 3.3 V drain bias and a 900 MHz operation frequency displayed an output power of 32.5-dBm and a power added efficiency of 68%. The associate power gain at 20 dBm input power and the linear gain were 12.5dB and 16.5dB, respectively. Two tone testing measured at 900.00MHz and 900.03MHz showed that a third-order intercept point is 49.5 dBm. The power MESFET developed in this work is expected to be useful as a power amplifying device for digital hand-held phone because the high linear gain can deliver a high power added efficiency in the linear operation region of output power and the high third-order intercept point can reduce the third-order intermodulation.

  • Non-linear equalization techniques using decision feedback structure are highly demanded for cancellation of intersymbol interferences occurred in severe channel environments. In this paper decision feedback structure is applied to the linear blind equalizer algorithm that is based on information theoretic learning and a randomly generated symbol set. At the decision feedback equalizer (DFE) the random symbols are generated to have the same probability density function (PDF) as that of the transmitted symbols. By minimizing difference between the PDF of blind DFE output and that of randomly generated symbols, the proposed DFE algorithm produces equalized output signal. From the simulation results, the proposed method has shown enhanced convergence and error performance compared to its linear counterpart.

  • In the original mixture density network(MDN), which was introduced by Bishop and Nabney, the parameters of the conditional probability density function are represented by the output vector of a single multi-layer perceptron. Among the recent modification of the MDNs, there is the so-called modified mixture density network, in which each of the priors, conditional means, and covariances is represented via an independent multi-layer perceptron. In this paper, we consider a further simplification of the modified MDN, in which the conditional means are linear with respect to the input variable together with the development of the MATLAB program for the simplification. In this paper, we first briefly review the original mixture density network, then we also review the modified mixture density network in which independent multi-layer perceptrons play an important role in the learning for the parameters of the conditional probability, and finally present a further modification so that the conditional means are linear in the input. The applicability of the presented method is shown via an illustrative simulation example.

  • As a result of the recent advances in magnetic materials, the Magnetic Amplifier(Magamp) technique is one of the reliable and cost-effective postregulation method for multiple-output power supply. This is true for high-current postregulated output since at highter output current the efficiency of linear postregulation is unacceptably low, while the complexity of more efficient switch mode postregulator is associated with a significant cost. Magamp have some advantages of higher power density, simple control circuit, good regulation, high frequency and high performance. In this paper, Operation principle of proposed approach and a performance of magamp control circuit with TL431 is described. The comparative analysis of magamp circuit and buck regulator circuit with 20W load condition is conducted. Experimental verifications on multi-output flyback converter are conducted. Simulations and experimental results show that the proposed approach is efficiency and voltage regulation of the auxiliary output is excellent.
