  • Wild boars are one of the major wild life animals of which the number has increased a lot because there has been any predator and/or competitor in the Korean ecosystem. The increase of their number was a cause damaging crops in farm lands during the growing season in South Korea. This study was done to recognize the spatial pattern of farm lands damaged by wild boars. Totally 2,342 farms were known damaged by wild boars in 2012, and used to statistically analyze the perspectives of the farm land damages by wild boars in ArcMap v. 9.3. Damages by wild boars frequently happened in the western part of Gyeongnam Province including Jinju city, Tongyoung city and Namhae county. Most farm lands damaged were located nearby large mountains in this area. It might cause the number of wild boars increased in this area, which could finally stimulate the increase of farm land damaged by the species. Farm land damages by wild boars were also coincident with the preference of wild boars on their food. They preferred crops (e.g., sweet potato and corn) in uplands and rice paddies and orchards. The reason of their preference on rice, upland crops and fruits was related to the efficiency of their getting much more energy in a unit area. Another reason for the species to come into a rice paddy would be that they enjoy mud bath in there for scraping off parasites such as ticks and lice. Wild boars were seemed much overcrowded during the period from July to October when most of crops and fruits get ripen. About three-quarters of total farm land damages happened in this period. This analysis also said that 1,915 fields (81.8% of total targets) appeared within the 100-meter buffer from boundaries of mountain areas. This meant that wild boars were more sensitive to the anthropogenic land uses than we expected. They seemed to conservatively try their feeding activities in farm lands with paying attention to the human activity.

  • The aim of this study is to find the optimal combination dyeing condition for the enhancement of dye uptake and union dyeing of the composite material fabric made of triacetate and quick drying PET blended yarn. For the experiment, fabrics were one-bath combination dyed using the mixed dye of E-type disperse dye(C.I Disperse red 50) and S-type disperse dye(C.I. Disperse red 92) to measure dyed fabric's dye exhaustion, dye uptake, color and color difference according to the diverse conditions including dying temperature, time and mixed ratio of the dye. Dye equilibrium of combination dyeing occurred in $100^{\circ}C$, but by comparing dyed fabrics' K/S value and surface color, it was found that $120^{\circ}C$ was where the manifestation of color of triacetate and quick drying PET was identical. Mixed dye exhaustion and dye uptake merely changed as dyeing time increased, but color became more uniform. Therefore, it can be concluded that by using combination dyeing method, and by using the mixed dye which the mixing ratio of S-type dye and E-type dye is appropriately controlled, dye uptake can be improved compared to using single dyeing regardless of the color of E-type dye.

  • For the coating of diamond films on WC-Co tools, a buffer interlayer is needed because Co catalyzes diamond into graphite. W and Ti were chosen as candidate interlayer materials to prevent the diffusion of Co during diamond deposition. W or Ti interlayer of $1{\mu}m$ thickness was deposited on WC-Co substrate under Ar in a DC magnetron sputter. After seeding treatment of the interlayer-deposited specimens in an ultrasonic bath containing nanometer diamond powders, $2{\mu}m$ thick nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) films were deposited at $600^{\circ}C$ over the metal layers in a 2.45 GHz microwave plasma CVD system. The cross-sectional morphology of films was observed by FESEM. X-ray diffraction and visual Raman spectroscopy were used to confirm the NCD crystal structure. Micro hardness was measured by nano-indenter. The coefficient of friction (COF) was measured by tribology test using ball on disk method. After tribology test, wear tracks were examined by optical microscope and alpha step profiler. Rockwell C indentation test was performed to characterize the adhesion between films and substrate. Ti and W were found good interlayer materials to act as Co diffusion barriers and diamond nucleation layers. The COFs on NCD films with W or Ti interlayer were measured as less than 0.1 whereas that on bare WC-Co was 0.6~1.0. However, W interlayer exhibited better results than Ti in terms of the adhesion to WC-Co substrate and to NCD film. This result is believed to be due to smaller difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion of the related films in the case of W interlayer than Ti one. By varying the thickness of W interlayer as 1, 2, and $4{\mu}m$ with a fixed $2{\mu}m$ thick NCD film, no difference in COF and wear behavior but a significant change in adhesion was observed. It was shown that the thicker the interlayer, the stronger the adhesion. It is suggested that thicker W interlayer is more effective in relieving the residual stress of NCD film during cooling after deposition and results in stronger adhesion.

  • A new technique for the preparation of porous polyurethane vascular prostheses was investigated. Synthetic vascular grafts with porous wall have been widely proposed, claiming that strength, suture retention, kink resistance, and other handling properties are improved over those with nonporous solid wall. Related to these facts, the control of pores and compliance match have been very important and interesting issues. Two kinds of polymer sheets were compared. One was the porous PU-sheet made at room temerature by the solvent/non-solvent exchange. And the other was the porous PU-sheet fabricated by thermal phase transition and solvent/non-solvent exchange in the thermal controlled bath. According to the result of the above experiments, polyurethane solution was injected into a mold designed for U-type graft. After freezing at low temperature, solvent was dissolved out with alcohol at < $0^{\circ}C$ and water at room temperature to form porous vessels. The average pore size and pore occupation were easily changed by changing polyurethane concentration and freezing rate. This technique can give a proper pore size for tissue ingrowth, and suitable compliances for matching with arteries and veins. In addition, the fabrication of more complicated shaped vessels such as the U-type vascular grafts is easily controlled by using a mold. This method might give a desired compliact graft for artificial implantaion with the commercially available medical polymers.

  • An important property of the intestine is the ability to secrete fluid. The intestinal secretion is regulated by a number of substances including vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), ATP and different inflammatory mediators. One of the most important secretagogues is adenosine during inflammation. However, the controversy concerning the underlying mechanism of adenosine-stimulated $Cl^-$ secretion in intestinal epithelial cells still continues. To investigate the effect of adenosine on $Cl^-$ secretion and its underlying mechanism in the rabbit colon mucosa, we measured short circuit current ($I_{SC}$) under automatic voltage clamp with DVC-1000 in a modified Ussing chamber. Adenosine, when added to the basolateral side of the muocsa, increased $I_{SC}$ in a dose-dependent manner. The adenosine-stimulated $I_{SC}$ response was abolished when $Cl^-$ in the bath solution was replaced completely with gluconate. In addition, the $I_{SC}$ response was inhibited by a basolateral Na-K-Cl cotransporter blocker, bumetanide, and by apical $Cl^-$ channel blockers, dephenylamine-2-carboxylate (DPC), 5-nitro-2-(3-phenyl-propylamino)-benzoate (NPPB), glibenclamide. Amiloride, an epithelial $Na^+$ channel blocker, and 4,4-diisothiocyanato-stilbene-2,2-disulphonate (DIDS), a $Ca^{2+}-activated$ $Cl^-$ channel blocker, had no effect. In the mucosa pre-stimulated with forskolin, adenosine did not show any additive effect, whereas carbachol resulted in a synergistic potentiation of the $I_{SC}$ response. The adenosine response was inhibited by 10 ${\mu}M$ H-89, an inhibitor of protein kinase A. These results suggest that the adenosine-stimulated $I_{SC}$ response is mediated by basolateral to apical $Cl^-$ secretion through a cAMP-dependent $Cl^-$ channel. The rank order of potencies of adenosine receptor agonists was $5'-(N-ethylcarboxamino)adenosine(NECA)>N^6-(R-phenylisopropyl)adenosine(R-$ PIA)>2-[p-(2-carbonylethyl)-phenyl-ethylamino]-5'-N-ethylcarboxaminoadenosine(CGS21680). From the above results, it can be concluded that adenosine interacts with the $A_{2b}$ adenosine receptor in the rabbit colon mucosa and a cAMP-dependent signalling mechanism underlies the stimulation of $Cl^-$ secretion.

  • Two-step or one-step bonding systems generally inhibit curing process of dual-cured core build-up resin composite for their adhesive acidity. In addition this dual-cured core build-up resin composite can be applied to dentin of pulp chamber and root at the time that complete the endodontic treatment. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the influence of sodium hypochlorite on rnicrotensile bond strength of dual-cured core build-up resin composite. Extracted human molars were horizontally sectioned with 1mm thickness using low speed diamond saw. After the sectioned specimens were divided into 8 groups, adhesive systems (Clearfil SE-Bond, Prime&Bond NT[2-step, 1-step], Adper Prompt L-Pop) were then applied with or without sodium hypochlorite pretreatment. The treated specimen was filled with dual-cured core build-up resin composite (Luxacore, DMG corp., German). Then light cured for 40 seconds and soaked in $37^{\circ}C$ water bath for 24 hours. After the treated specimen was grinded with 1mm width and measured rnicrotensile bond strength by testing machine. Additionally 8 teeth were prepared for SEM evaluation. The results were as follows. : NaOCl treated groups generally had lower rnicrotensile bond strength but did not show any difference statistically except Adper Prompt L-Pop. When the teeth were treated by NaOCl, though the difference of applied adhesive system, it had no statistically significant difference within the NaOCl treated groups except the relation of between ClearFil SE-Bond adhesive system and Adper Prompt L-Pop adhesive system. In the SEM evaluation, NaOCl treated groups presented relatively long resin tags and incomplete hybrid layer formation generally.

  • We determined the optimum pretreatment conditions such as pH and time for swelling duck feet and investigated the effects of the extracting method, such as water bath (WB), pressure cooker (PC), and microwave oven (MO), on quality characteristics of the duck feet gelatin for improving utilization of duck feet as a novel source of gelatin. The soaking solution of pH 1 among pH 1-14 with unit intervals was selected due to the highest yield. The quality characteristics of the gelatin tested were color, pH, gel strength, viscosity, and melting point. For the extracted gelatin with different methods, the CIE $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values were in the following order: MO>PC>WB (p<0.05), WB>PC>MO (p<0.05) and PC>MO>WB (p<0.05), respectively. The gelatin extracted using WB showed the highest pH and that extracted using MO showed the lowest pH (p<0.05). The gel strength, viscosity, and melting point were the highest for MO (p<0.05). The gel strength and melting point were the lowest for PC (p<0.05). No significant difference was found in viscosity between the gelatins extracted using WB and PC (p>0.05). The quality characteristic of duck feet gelatin was affected by extracting methods, and MO extraction can be one of the effective methods for duck feet gelatin.

  • We examined effects of red ginseng on the formation of glycated protein in vivo and in vitro. The mixtures (1 : 1 : 1, v/v/v) with glucose (1.5 g/dl, hemoglobin (10 g/d) and red ginseng extract (0.5 g/dl) in 0.067 M phosphate saline buffer were incubated for 5 days in shaking water bath (37$\^{C}$, 70 RPM). Male rats were divided into three groups with one health and two diabetes, consisting of 20 heads in each group. Diabetic rats, induced by streptozotocin injection, were treated with or without red ginseng extract (100 mg/kg/day) for 3 months. The concentration of blood glucose and the rate of glycated hemoglobin were determined by commercial kits. The rate of glycated hemoglobin was significantly decreased by the addition of ginseng extract in comparison with non-addition group in vitro (12.17$\pm$ 1.01% vs 15.9$\pm$ 1.95%, meansd, p<0.01). Even though the levels of blood glucose in rats were not significantly different from each other, the rate of glycated hemoglobin in ginseng treated diabetic rats was $\pm$ se significantly lower than non-treated diabetic rats after 3 months (15.1$\pm$ 2.06% vs 20.1 $\pm$ 2.9%, mean$\pm$ sd, p<0.05). Additionally, the body weight was increased, drinking water volume was decreased non-significantly by the treatment of ginseng extract. These results suggest that ginseng can also inhibit the formation of glycated protein by other mechanisms which are not related with hyoglyemic effect of ginseng.
