  • PURPOSES: Using the collected data for crash, traffic volume, and design elements on ramps between 2007 and 2009, this research effort was initiated to develop traffic crash prediction models for expressway ramps. METHODS: Three negative binomial regression models and three zero-inflated negative binomial regression models were developed for individual ramp types, including direct, semi-direct and loop, respectively. For validating the developed models, authors compared the estimated crash frequencies with actual crash frequencies of twelve randomly selected interchanges, the ramps of which have not been used for model developing. RESULTS: The results show that the negative binomial regression models for direct, semi-direct and loop ramps showed 60.3%, 63.8% and 48.7% error rates on average whereas the zero-inflated negative binomial regression models showed 82.1%, 120.4% and 57.3%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Conclusively, the negative binomial regression models worked better in traffic crash prediction than the zero-inflated negative binomial regression models for estimating the frequency of traffic accidents on expressway ramps.

  • This paper proposes a design of the tile based on graphic pipeline to improve the graphic application performance in SIMT based GP-GPU. The proposed Tile based on graphics pipeline avoids unnecessary graphic processing operation, and processes the rasterization step in parallel. The massive data processing in parallel through SIMT architecture improve the computational performance, thereby improving the 3D graphic pipeline performance. The more vertex data of 3D model, the higher performance. The proposed structure was confirmed to improve processing performance of up to 3 times from about 1.18 times as compared to 'RAMP' and previous studies.

  • In this paper, a new preprocessing method is proposed to speedup the watershed-based image segmentation In the proposed method, the gradient correction values of ramp edges are calculated from the positions and width of the ramp edges using Laplacian operator, and then, unlike the conventional method in which the monoscale or multi scale gradient image is directly used as a reference iImage, the reference image is obtained by adding the threshold value to each position of the ramp edges in the monoscale gradient image And the marker image is reconstructed on the reference image by erosion By preprocessing the image for the watershed transformation in such a manner, we can reduce the oversegmentations far more than those of applying the conventional morphological filter to the simple monoscale or multiscale gradient-based reference image Thus, we can reduce the total image segmentation time by reducing the time of postprocessing of region merging, which consumes most of the processing time In the watershed-based image segmentation, Experimental results indicate that the proposed method can speedup the total image segmentation about twice than those of the conventional methods, without the loss of ramp edges and principal edges around the dense-edge region.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of reconstruction filters, X-ray source trajectories and intervals in the quality of digital tomosynthesis (DT) images, and the results was clinically validated. The filtered back-projection was implemented by using Ramp, Shepp-Logan, Cosine, Hamming, Hann and Blackman filters, and the X-ray source trajectories were simulated with 1 × 36, 2 × 18, 3 × 12, 4 × 9 and 6 × 6 arrays. The X-ray source intervals were 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 mm. The depth resolution, spatial resolution and noise of DT image were evaluated by measuring artifact spread function (ASF), full width at half maximum (FWHM) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), respectively. The results showed that the spatial resolution and noise properties of DT images were maximized by the Ramp and Blackman filters, respectively, and the depth resolution and noise properties of the DT images obtained with a 1 × 36 X-ray source trajectory were superior to the other trajectories. The depth resolution and noise properties of DT images improved with an increase of X-ray source intervals, and the high X-ray source intervals degraded the spatial resolution of DT images. Therefore, the characteristics of DT images are highly dependent on reconstruction filters, X-ray source trajectories and intervals, and it is necessary to use optimal imaging parameters in accordance with diagnostic purpose.

  • This paper aims to develop an integrated urban freeway exit-intersection actuated traffic signal control strategy based on which a real-time detection of queue at each of an exit-ramp and an arterial. To evaluate effects of the proposed actuated traffic signal control according to various traffic situations and geometric conditions, this paper analyzed the effects of the proposed traffic signal control strategy according to traffic situations such as the occasion of the arterial being saturated, the occasion of the exit-ramp being saturated, and the occasion of both the arterial and the exit-ramp being saturated. To reflect geometric conditions that influence the effects of the control strategy, this paper evaluated effects before and after applying the actuated traffic signal control strategy according to six cases for both above and under the downstream link length of 200m as proposed by COSMOS. The study results shown that when the link length above 200m, offered a greater effect of applying the actuated traffic control strategy than below 200m. Thus, the actuated traffic signal control through a real-time detection of queue is expected to offer a greater effect at longer downward link.

  • Misfiring is often observed during the high temperature quality assurance test of plasma display panel. This limits the productivity of PDP industry. In this paper, experimental observations on the misfiring at high panel temperature have been performed through time dependent discharge light output and static margin measurement. For the high temperature condition, firing voltage increment is found in both surface and facing discharges. This in turn increases time lag in address discharge, and results in increment of misfiring probability. In order to reduce this kind of misfiring, a new method that applies automatically different slope of ramp erasing pulse on the common electrode according to temperature variation is proposed. The experimental results show that controlling the slope of ramp erasing pulse is quite effective for compensating temperature-dependent variation of reset and address discharge.

  • This paper introduces the dynamic control of acceleration lanes at freeway-ramp junctions. The feasibility of operation with flexible length of acceleration lane was tested with most possible traffic conditions. The operational qualify was also evaluated using average speed and total thru-put at both ramp section and freeway section. A CORSIM microscopic simulation model was used to evaluate the operation quality with a variety or volume conditions and three acceleration lanes, each representing different length categories. In addition, tollgate O-D data including travel times were obtained for two sections on the Gyeong-bu Freeway where an effective merging distance has been largely reduced. Its effect was analyzed and compared to the simulation results. Finally, the effects of acceleration lane are discussed and operational improvement at junctions is presented as research findings.

  • This paper proposes a method to drive an AC plasma display panel(PDP) with a significantly improved contrast ratio. In the proposed method, during the first sub-field of one frame, all PDP cells are reset by the ramp waveform, and during the other sub-field, only the cells turned on in the previous sub-field are reset. No light is emitted during the reset period of every sub-field except the first sub-field. For a 10-bit picture, the luminance of the dark level for the proposed method is 10 times lower than that for the conventional method, in which the ramp waveform for the reset is used in every sub-field. Accordingly, the contrast ratio for the proposed method is 10 times higher than that for the conventional method. For the 10-bit picture, the measured contrast ratio was about 3080:1 for the proposed method and about 285:1 with the conventional method, a result the contrast ratio has been increased in 10.8 times. This result shows that the proposed method can realize an image with high contrast ratio.
