Microcontroller (MCU) is designed to properly utilize each module through programming by connecting various modules to Advanced Microcontroller Bus Architecture (AMBA). General-purpose MCUs are designed for consumers to use them appropriately in their research or industry area. However, in a specific area such as networking and AI autonomous vehicles, it is necessary to design MCU suitable for the field directly. However, there is a significant barrier for most consumers to directly design an MCU. In this paper, we provide a development guideline that can easily design an MCU for education or research purpose. First, we introduce AMBA system with open IPs, and we verify that the module operates properly through AMBA and interrupt operation. Finally, the MCU system is designed as an on-chip.

We present an approach to high-level synthesis for a specific target architecture-partitioned bus architecture. In this approach, we have specific goals of minimizing data transfer length and number of buses in addition to common synthesis goals such as minimizing number of control steps and satisfying given resource constraint. Minimizing data transfer length and number of buses can be very important design goals in the era of deep submicron technology in which interconnection delay and area dominate total delay and area of the chip to be designed. in partitioned bus architecture, to get optimal solution satisfying all the goals, partitioning of operation nodes among segments and ordering of segments as well as scheduling and allocation/binding must be considered concurrently. Those additional goals may impose much more complexity on the existing high-level synthesis problem. To cope with this increased complexity and get reasonable results, we have employed two ideas in ur synthesis approach-extension of the target architecture to alleviate bus requirement for data transfer and adoption of genetic algorithm as a principal methodology for design space exploration. Experimental results show that our approach is a promising high-level synthesis mehtodology for partitioned bus architecture.
In On-Chip bus, the arbitration scheme is one of the critical factors that decide the overall system performance. The arbitration scheme used in traditional shared bus is the master-side arbitration based on the request and grant signals between multiple masters and single arbiter. In the case of the master-side arbitration, only one master and one slave can transfer the data at a time. Therefore the throughput of total bus system and the utilization of resources are decreased in the master-side arbitration. However in the slave-side arbitration, there is an arbiter at each slave port and the master just starts a transaction and waits for the slave response to proceed to the next transfer. Thus, the unit of arbitration can be a transaction or a transfer. Besides the throughput of total bus system and the utilization of resources are increased since the multiple masters can simultaneously perform transfers with independent slaves. In this paper, we implement and analyze the arbitration schemes for the Multi-Layer AHB BusMatrix based on the slave-side arbitration. We implement the slave-side arbitration schemes based on fixed priority, round robin and dynamic priority and accomplish the performance simulation to compare and analyze the performance of each arbitration scheme according to the characteristics of the master and slave. With the performance simulation, we observed that when there are few masters on critical path in a bus system, the arbitration scheme based on dynamic priority shows the maximum performance and in other cases, the arbitration scheme based on round robin shows the highest performance. In addition, the arbitration scheme with transaction based multiplexing shows higher performance than the same arbitration scheme with single transfer based switching in an application with frequent accesses to the long latency devices or memories such as SDRAM. The improvements of the arbitration scheme with transaction based multiplexing are 26%, 42% and 51%, respectively when the latency times of SDRAM are 1, 2 and 3 clock cycles.
In this paper we present a switch wrapper for an AMBA AXI, which is an efficient on-chip-network interface compared to bus-based interfaces in a multiprocessor SoC. The AXI uses an idea of NoC to provide the increasing demands on communication bandwidth within a single chip. A switch wrapper for AXI is located between a interconnection network and two IPs connecting them together. It carries out a mode of routing to interconnection network and executes protocol conversions to provide compatibility in IP reuse. A switch wrapper consists of a direct router, AHB-AXI converters, interface modules and a controller modules. We propose the design of a all-in-one type switch wrapper.

Network-on-chip (NoC) has evolved to overcome the issues of traditional bus-based on-chip interconnect. In NoC-reuse as TAM, the test schedulers are constrained with the topological position of cores and test access points, which may negatively affect the test time. This paper presents a scalable hybrid test data transportation scheme that allows to simultaneously test multiple heterogeneous cores of NoC-based SoCs, while reusing NoC as TAM. In the proposed test scheme, single test stimuli set of multiple CUTs is embedded into each flit of the test stimuli packets and those packets are multicast to the targeted CUTs. However, the test response packets of each CUT are unicast towards the tester. To reduce network load, a flit is filled with maximum possible test response sets before unicasting towards the tester. With the aid of Verilog and analytical simulations, the proposed scheme is proved effective and the results are compared with some recent techniques.

To implement the high performance SoC, we propose the flying master bus architecture that a specially defined master named as the flying master directly accesses the selected slaves with no regard to the bus protocol. The proposed bus architecture was implemented through Verilog and mapped the design into Hynix 0.18um technology. As master and slave wrappers have around 150 logic gate counts, the area overhead is still small considering the typical area of modules in SoC designs. In TLM performance simulation about proposed architecture, 25~40% of transaction cycle and 43~60% of bus efficiency are increased and 43~77% of request cycle is decreased, compared with conventional bus architecture. Conclusively, we assume that the proposed flying master bus architecture is promising as the leading candidate of the bus architecture in the aspect of performance and efficiency.

USB bus not only works with convenience but also transmits data fast and becomes a standard peripheral interface between FPGA development board and personal computer. In this paper FPGA verification system with slave FIFO interface for Cypress FX3 USB 3 bridge chip was implemented. The designed slave FIFO interface consists of host interface module based on FIFO structure, master bus controller and command decoder and supports streaming communication interface for FX3 bridge chip and memory-mapped input and output interface for user design circuit. The ZestSC3 board with Cypress FX3 USB 3 bridge chip and Xilinx Artix FPGA(XC7A35T-1C5G3241) was used to implement FPGA verification system. It was verified that the FPGA verification system for user design circuit operated correctly under various clock frequencies using GUI software developed by visual C# and C++ DLL. The designed slave FIFO interface for FPGA verification system has modular structure and can be applicable to the different user designs with memory-mapped I/O interface.

In this paper, we propose a novel Globally Asynchronous, Locally Dynamic System(GALDS) bus and demonstrate its performance. The proposed GALDS bus is the bidirectional multitasking bus with the segmented bus architecture supporting the concurrent operation of multi-masters and multi-slaves. By analyzing system tasks, the bus architecture chooses the optimal frequency for each If among multiples of bus frequency and thus we can reduce the overall power consumption. For efficient data communications between IPs operating in different frequencies, we designed an asynchronous and bidirectional FIFO based on an asynchronous wrapper with hand-shaking interface. In addition, since systems can be easily expandable by inserting bus segments, the proposed architecture has advantages in IP reusability and structural flexibility As a test example, a four-segment bus haying four masters and four slaves were designed by using Verilog HDL. We demonstrate multitasking operations with read/write data transfers by simulation when the ratios of operation frequency are 1:1, 1:2, 1:4 and 1:8. The data transfer mode is a 16 burst increment mode compatible with Advanced Microcontroller Bus Architecture(AMBA). The maximum operation latency of the proposed GALDS bus is 22 clock cycles for the bus write operation, and 44 clock cycles for read.

A system-on-chip (SoC) includes more functions and requires rapidly increased data bandwidth as the development of semiconductor process technology and SoC design methodology. As a result, the data bandwidth of on-chip-networks in SoCs becomes a key factor of the system performance, and the research on the on-chip-network is performed actively. Either AXI or OCP is considered to a substitute of the AHB which has been the most popular on-chip-network. However, they have much increased number of signal wires, which make it difficult to design the interface logic and the network hardware. The compatibility of the protocols with other protocols is not so good. In this paper, we propose a new interface protocol for on-chip-networks to improve the problems mentioned above. The proposed protocol uses less number of signal wires than that of the AHB and considers the compatibility with other interface protocols such as the AXI. According the analysis results, the performance of the proposed protocol per wire is much better than that of the AXI although the absolute performance is slightly inferior.
