  • This paper proposes an indirect adaptive fuzzy controller for general SISO nonlinear systems. In indirect adaptive fuzzy control, based on the proved approximation capability of fuzzy systems, they are used to capture the unknown nonlinearities of the plant. Until now, most of the papers in the field of controller design for nonlinear system considers the affine system using fuzzy systems which have fixed grid-rule structure. We proposes a dynamic fuzzy rule insertion scheme where fuzzy rule-base grows as time goes on. With this method, the dynamic order of the controller reduces dramatically and an appropriate number of fuzzy rules are found on-line. No a priori information on bounding constants of uncertainties including reconstruction errors and optimal fuzzy parameters is needed. The control law and the update laws for fuzzy rule structure and estimates of fuzzy parameters and bounding constants are determined so that the Lyapunov stability of the whole closed-loop system is guaranteed.

  • The accurate peak response estimation of a seismically excited structure with frictional damping system(FDS) is very difficult since the structure with FDS shows nonlinear behavior dependent on the structural period, loading characteristics, and relative magnitude between the frictional force and the excitation load. Previous studies have estimated that by replacing a nonlinear system with an equivalent linear one or by employing the response spectrum obtained based on nonlinear time history and statistical analysis. In the case that an earthquake load is defined with probabilistic characteristics, the corresponding response of the structure with FDS has probabilistic distribution. In this study, nonlinear time history analyses were performed for the structure with FDS subjected to artificial earthquake loads generated using Kanai-Tajimi filter. An equation for the probability density function (PDF) of the displacement response is proposed by adapting the PDF of the normal distribution. Finally, coefficients of the proposed PDF are obtained by regression analysis of the statistical distribution of the time history responses. Finally the correlation between PDFs and statistical response distribution is presented.

  • Globally stabilizing adaptive fuzzy state- and output-feedback controllers for the fully nonaffine pure-feedback nonlinear system are proposed in this paper. By reformulating the original pure-feedback system to a standard normal form with respect to newly defined state variables, the proposed controllers require no backstepping design procedures. Avoiding backstepping makes the controller structure and stability analysis to be considerably simplified. For the global stabilty of the clossed-loop system, the self-structuring fuzzy system whose memebership functions and fuzzy rules are automatically generated and tuned is adopted. The proposed controllers employ only one fuzzy logic system to approximate unknown nonlinear function, which highlights the simplicity of the proposed adaptive fuzzy controller. Moreover, the output-feedback controller of the considered system proposed in this paper have not been dealt with in any literature yet.

  • Compared with the identification of linear structures, it is more challenging to conduct identification of nonlinear structure systems, especially when the locations of structural nonlinearities are not clear in structural systems. Moreover, it is highly desirable to develop methods of parametric identification using partial measurements of structural responses for practical application. To cope with these issues, an identification method is proposed in this paper for the detection and parametric identification of structural nonlinear restoring forces using only partial measurements of structural responses. First, an equivalent linear structural system is proposed for a nonlinear structure and the locations of structural nonlinearities are detected. Then, the parameters of structural nonlinear restoring forces at the locations of identified structural nonlinearities together with the linear part structural parameters are identified by the extended Kalman filter. The proposed method simplifies the identification of nonlinear structures. Numerical examples of the identification of two nonlinear multi-story shear frames and a planar nonlinear truss with different nonlinear models and locations are used to validate the proposed method.

  • This paper presents a new hybrid approach for nonlinear dynamic analysis of the soil-structure interaction system in the time domain. It employs, in a practical manner, a linear SSI program and a general-purpose nonlinear finite element program. In order to demonstrate the validity and applicability of the proposed method, seismic response analyses are carried out for a free-field problem and a 2-D subway station. The results indicate that the proposed methodology gives reasonable solution for the linear/nonlinear SSI problem utilizing a general-purpose finite element program. Some further studies will endorse the applicability of the method to various soil-structure interaction problems.

  • This paper studied the effect of soil-structure interaction (SSI) on the seismic response and retrofit of a reinforced concrete structure with a soft-first story for different soil types. A 5-story structure built on a 30m deep homogeneous soil mass was considered as a case study structure, and steel column jacketing and steel bracing were chosen as seismic retrofit methods. Seismic responses of a fixed-base and a flexible base structure subjected to seven scaled earthquake records were obtained using the software OpenSees to investigate the effect of soil on seismic response and retrofit. The nonlinearBeamColumn elements with the fiber sections were used to simulate the nonlinear behavior of the beams and columns. Soil properties were defined based on shear wave velocity according to categorized site classes defined in ASCE-7. The finite element model of the soil was made using isoparametric four-noded quadrilateral elements and the nonlinear dynamic responses of the combined system of soil and structure were calculated in the OpenSees. The analysis results indicate that the soil-structure interaction plays an important role in the seismic performance and retrofit of a structure with a soft-first story. It was observed that column steel jacketing was effective in the retrofit of the model structure on a fixed base, whereas stronger retrofit measures such as steel bracing were needed when soil-structure interaction was considered.

  • Traditional experimental verification for nonlinear system identification often faces the problem of experiment model repeatability. In our research, a steel frame experimental model is developed to imitate the behavior of a single story steel frame under horizontal excitation. Two adjustable rotational dampers are used to simulate the plastic hinge effect of the damaged beam-column joint. This model is suggested as a benchmark model for nonlinear dynamics study. Since the nonlinear form provided by the damper is unknown, a Morlet wavelet based method is introduced to identify the mathematical model of this structure under different damping cases. After the model identification, earthquake excitation tests are carried out to verify the generality of the identified model. The results show the extensive applicability and effectiveness of the identification method.

  • By utilizing the interinsic structure of the underlying continous-time nonlinear system, one can design an approximate sampled-data observer improved with respect ot the sampling-time for the systems. In this paper, we characterize the conditions for the solvability of the improved approximate sampled-data nonlinear observer design problem. In particular, it is shown that when the dimension of the state space is two, the nonlinear systems for which it is possible ot desing 3rd or higher order approximate sampled-data nonlinear observer are locally state-equivalent to an observable bilinear system. The practical implication is that seeking higher order approximate sampled-data nonlinear observer for nonlinear systems is very restricted.

  • An input time delay always exists in practical systems. Analysis of the delay phenomenon in a continuous-time domain is sophisticated. It is appropriate to obtain its corresponding discrete-time model for implementation via digital computers. In this paper a new scheme for the discretization of nonlinear systems using Taylor series expansion and the zero-order hold assumption is proposed. The mathematical structure of the new discretization method is analyzed. On the basis of this structure the sampled-data representation of nonlinear systems with time-delayed multi-input is presented. The delayed multi-input general equation has been derived. In particular, the effect of the time-discretization method on key properties of nonlinear control systems, such as equilibrium properties and asymptotic stability, is examined. Additionally, hybrid discretization schemes that result from a combination of the scaling and squaring technique (SST) with the Taylor series expansion are also proposed, especially under conditions of very low sampling rates. Practical issues associated with the selection of the method's parameters to meet CPU time and accuracy requirements, are examined as well. A performance of the proposed method is evaluated using a nonlinear system with time delay maneuvering an automobile.
