Effects of microstructure on the toughness of low carbon HSLA steels were investigated. Nickel decreased the ferrite-austenite transformation temperature, resulted in increase of the fraction of bainitic ferrite. However, it was decreased with increasing deformation amount at austenite region. Since fine austenite grains formed by dynamic recrystallization under large strain transformed to acicular ferrite or granular bainite rather than bainitic ferrite. The effective grain size, thus, was decreased by deformation and it resulted in lower ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). The bainitic ferrite was thought to inhibit the fracture crack initiation and to delay the crack propagation by its high dislocation density and hard interlath $2^{nd}$ phase constituents, respectively. Thus, DBTT was also decreased by Ni addition in low carbon HSLA steels.

The particulate behaviors of nickel ferrite were investigated under the simulated PWR shutdown chemistry conditions. Temperature of the simulated water with concentration of 0.1 ppm Li and 2,000 ppm B was dropped from $300^{\circ}C$ to $150^{\circ}C$ with a rate of $0.625^{\circ}C/min$ and then constantly maintained at $150^{\circ}C$ under the pressure of 2,500 psi. The on-line particle counting and the concentration measurement of nickel dissolved were performed under 5, 15 and 25 cc/kg $H_2O$ dissolved hydrogen. Experimental results showed that total particle count in the simulated water was not greatly changed for three hydrogen concentrations as temperature was decreased. However, particles were smaller as temperature was decreased and then maintained constantly. The degree of variation in particle size distribution was greater at 15 cc/kg $H_2O$ dissolved hydrogen than any other dissolved hydrogen concentrations. Concentration of nickel ion was increased as temperature was decreased and was higher at 15 cc/kg $H_2O$ dissolved hydrogen than any other dissolved hydrogen concentrations. Theses results show that nickel ferrite is unstable with temperature variation and at dissolved hydrogen concentration of 15 cc/kg $H_2O$.
As the energy consumption increases rapidly, power generation needs the high energy efficiency continuously. To achieve the high efficiency of power generation, the materials used have to endure the higher temperature and pressure. The 9-12%Cr steels possess good mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and creep strength in high temperature due to high Cr contents. Therefore, the 9-12%Cr steels are widely used for the high-temperature components in power plants. Even though the steels usually have a fully martensitic microstructure, they are susceptible to the formation of ${\delta}$-ferrite specifically during the welding process. The formation of ${\delta}$-ferrite has several detrimental effects on creep, ductility and toughness. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid its formation. As the volume fraction of ${\delta}$-ferrite is less than 2% in microstructure, it has the isolated island morphology and causes no significant degradation on mechanical properties. For ${\delta}$-ferrite above 2%, it has a polygonal shape affecting the detrimental influence on the mechanical properties. The formation of ${\delta}$-ferrite is affected by two factors: a chemical composition and a welding heat input. The most effective ways to get a fully martensite microstructure are to reduce the chromium equivalent less than 13.5, to keep the difference between the chromium and nickel equivalent less than 8, and to reduce the welding heat input.
Effect of a flux composition on weld metal toughness in submerged arc welding with 60kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ grade C-Mo type wires was investigated and interpreted in terms of weld metal microstructure and hardenability. Flux workability was also studied by characterizing a weld bead profile. Compared to other weld metals, .weld metal used alumina basic flux with nickel showed lowest oxygen content, highest hardenability and the most acicular ferrite. The highest impact toughness of that weld metal, however, was attributed to the tough matrix due to the nickel rather than to the larger amount of acicular ferrite. Manganese silicate flux had better workability than alumina basic flux, showing broader welding conditions resulting in a depth-to-width ratio of 0.5. The composition of oxides in the weld metal was dependent on the flux composition, showing MnO-SiO$_2$-TiO in manganese silicate flux and MnO-SiO$_2$-Al$_2$O$_3$-TiO in alumina basic flux. MnO-SiO$_2$composition in both oxides was similar to a tephroite.

In this study, nickel-zinc ferrite nanoparticles, with the chemical formula of $Ni_{0.3}Zn_{0.7-x}Cu_xFe_2O_4$ (where x = 0.1- 0.6 by step 0.1), were fabricated by the sol-gel method. The effect of copper substitution on the phase formation and crystal structure of the sample was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermo-gravimetry (TG), differential thermal analysis (DTA), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The XRD result shows that due to the reduction of Zn content, the crystallite size of the sample increased. The results of the vibration sample magnetometer (VSM) exhibit an increase in saturation magnetization value (Ms) for samples with x ${\leq}$ 0.3 and a linear decrease for samples with x > 0.3. The variation of saturation magnetization and coercivity of the samples were then studied.

Nickel ferrite ($NiFe_2O_4$) powder was prepared through the ceramic route by calcination of a stoichiometric mixture of nickel oxide (NiO) and iron oxide ($Fe_2O_3$). The pressed pellets of $NiFe_2O_4$ were isothermally reduced in pure hydrogen at 800, 900, 1000 and $1100^{\circ}C$. Based on thermogravimetric analysis, the reduction behavior and the kinetic reaction mechanisms of the synthesized ferrite were studied. The initial ferrite powder and various reduction products were characterized by XRD, SEM, reflected light microscope and VSM to reveal the effect of hydrogen reduction on the composition, microstructure, magnetic properties and reaction kinetics of the produced Fe-Ni alloy. Complete reduction of the $NiFe_2O_4$ was achieved with synthesis of homogeneous nanocrystalline Fe-Ni alloys. Arrhenius equation with the approved mathematical formulations for a gas-solid reaction was applied for calculating the activation energy ($E_a$) values and detecting the controlling reaction mechanism.
The base metal and weld metal of alloy designed austenitic stainless steels were electrochemically tested in artificial sea water. Pitting resistance of 14 different stainless steels was evaluated by measuring pitting potential. The effect of alloy element to pitting potential was evaluated by changing chromium, nickel, sulfur content. The site of pitting initiation was observed by optical microscope. As a result of electrochemical test, pitting resistance of weld metal was higher than base metal, and rapidly cooled weld metal has higher pitting potential than slowly cooled weld metal. In case of primary δ-ferrite solidification, pitting potential was increased, but residual δ-ferrite was detrimental to pitting resistance. Chromium was more effective to pitting resistance than nickel, and sulfur was very detrimental element to pitting resistance.

The deposited Cu film on the ferrite magnet was more deposited comparing with that on the plastic magnet. The Cu film became thicker on the S pole comparing with that on the N pole in the both of magnets. The thickness and texture coefficient of deposited copper film affected with direction of line of magnetic force. The difference of pole had little or no effect to the texture coefficient of deposited nickel film. The reaction rate on ferrite magnet and S pole was faster comparing with that on plastic magnet and N pole.
The ferromagnetic resonance and other magnetic properties dependence on $Ni^{2+}/Fe^{3+}$ ratio and crystallite size were investigated for nano nickel ferrite ($NiFe_2O_4$). The crystallite size was controlled by controlling the nickel content in the starting material solution. The XRD and TEM were utilized to measure the crystallite size through Scherrer formula and particle size respectively. The most frequent particle sizes were lower than crystallite size, which ranged from 16.5 to 44.65 nm. The general behavior of M-H loop shapes and parameters showed superparamagnetic one. The saturation magnetization had a maximum value at $Ni^{2+}/Fe^{3+}$ molar ratio equal to 0.186. The FMR signals showed, generally, broad linewidths, where the maximum width and minimum resonance field were for the sample of the lowest crystalline size. Furthermore, FMR resonance field shows linear dependence on crystalline size. The fitting relation was estimated to express this linear dependency on the base of behavior coincidence between particle size and the inverse of saturation magnetization. The given interpretations to understand the intercept and the slope meanings of the fitted relation were based on Larmor equation, and inhomogeneous in the anisotropy constant.

Nickel cobalt ferrite($Ni_{0.5}Co_{0.5}Fe_2O_4$) powder was prepared through the ceramic route by the calcination of a stoichiometric mixture of NiO, CoO and $Fe_2O_3$ at $1100^{\circ}C$. The pressed pellets of $Ni_{0.5}Co_{0.5}Fe_2O_4$ were isothermally reduced in pure hydrogen at $800{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$. Based on the thermogravimetric analysis, the reduction behavior and the kinetic reaction mechanisms of the synthesized ferrite were studied. The initial ferrite powder and the various reduction products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, reflected light microscope and vibrating sample magnetometer to reveal the effect of hydrogen reduction on the composition, microstructure and magnetic properties of the produced Fe-Ni-Co alloy. The arrhenius equation with the approved mathematical formulations for the gas solid reaction was applied to calculate the activation energy($E_a$) and detect the controlling reaction mechanisms. In the initial stage of hydrogen reduction, the reduction rate was controlled by the gas diffusion and the interfacial chemical reaction. However, in later stages, the rate was controlled by the interfacial chemical reaction. The nature of the hydrogen reduction and the magnetic property changes for nickel cobalt ferrite were compared with the previous result for nickel ferrite. The microstructural development of the synthesized Fe-Ni-Co alloy with an increase in the reduction temperature improved its soft magnetic properties by increasing the saturation magnetization($M_s$) and by decreasing the coercivity($H_c$). The Fe-Ni-Co alloy showed higher saturation magnetization compared to Fe-Ni alloy.
