  • Free vibration analysis of multi-directional porous functionally graded (FG) sandwich plate has been performed for two cases namely: FG skin with homogeneous core and FG core with homogeneous skin. Hamilton's principle was employed and the solution was obtained using Navier's technique. This theory imposes traction-free boundary conditions on the surfaces and does not require shear correction factors. The results obtained are validated with those available in the literature. The composition of metal-ceramic-based functionally graded material (FGM) changes in longitudinal and transverse directions according to the power law. Imperfections in the functionally graded material introduced during the fabrication process were modeled with different porosity laws such as evenly, unevenly distributed, and logarithmic uneven distributions. The effect of porosity laws and geometry parameters on the natural frequency was investigated. On comparing the natural frequency of two cases for perfect and imperfect sandwich plates a reverse trend in natural frequency result was seen. The finding shows a multidirectional functionally graded structures perform better compared to uni-directional gradation. Hence, critical grading parameters and imperfection types have been identified which will guide experimentalists and researchers in selecting fabrication routes for improving the performance of such structures.

  • The mode perturbation method (MPM) is suitable and efficient for solving the eigenvalue problem of a nonuniform soil deposit whose property varies with depth. However, results of the MPM do not always converge to the exact solution, when the variation of soil deposit property is discontinuous. This discontinuity is typical because soil is usually made up of sedimentary layers of different geologic materials. Based on the energy integral of the variational principle, a new mode perturbation method, the energy-based mode perturbation method (EMPM), is proposed to address the convergence of the perturbation solution on the natural frequencies and the corresponding mode shapes and is able to find solution whether the soil properties are continuous or not. First, the variational principle is used to transform the variable coefficient differential equation into an equivalent energy integral equation. Then, the natural mode shapes of the uniform shear beam with same height and boundary conditions are used as Ritz function. The EMPM transforms the energy integral equation into a set of nonlinear algebraic equations which significantly simplifies the eigenvalue solution of the soil layer with variable properties. Finally, the accuracy and convergence of this new method are illustrated with two case study examples. Numerical results show that the EMPM is more accurate and convergent than the MPM. As for the mode shapes of the uniform shear beam included in the EMPM, the additional 8 modes of vibration are sufficient in engineering applications.

  • Honeybee venom (BV) from Apis mellifera L. has been used as natural antimicrobial compounds in pigs, cows, dairy cattle and chicken farms in Korea. The purpose of this study was conducted to confirm homogeneity and stability of BV dissolved with distilled water or saline solution. Melittin was analyzed with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) for BV to secure the validation of analysis. BV at concentration of 1 mg/mL was dissolved with distilled water or saline solution at room temperature. Homogeneity of BV dissolved with distilled water or saline solution at upper, milddle, and lower layers all satisfied the accuracy and precision criteria. Stability of BV dissolved with distilled water or saline solution for 7 days all satisfied the criterion both light and dark storage condition. BV has satisfied with homogeneity and stability in distilled water or saline solution at room temperature under light or dark condition. The results of this study suggest that BV has a possibility as the substitute of natural antimicrobial agents for the animal drugs and feed additives.

  • Inhibition effects of cysteine(Cys), methionine(Met), and histidine(His) on the corrosion of cobalt were investigated in deaerated 0.5 M HCl and 0.5 M $H_2SO_4$ solution. All the inhibition efficiency (IE) in the amino acids for the cobalt corrosion depended on the mixed inhibition. However, IE in the solution of $H_2SO_4$ depended more on the anodic and in the solution of HCl on the cathodic inhibition. Amino acid adsorption process on cobalt surface in the solution can be explained by modified Langmuir isotherm. The molecules of histidine dissolved in both of the solution were physically adsorbed due to the electrostatic interaction between the surface of {$Co-Cl^{-{\delta}}$} and the {$-NH_3{^+}$} or {$-NH^+=$} of His. However the other cases of adsorption in this investigation can be explained by chemical adsorption between the empty d-orbital of Co and the lone pair of electron in S-atom in Cys and Met.

  • The antimicrobial effect of mixed solution of botanical antimicrobial agent-citrus product (BAAC) and such a natural additive as aloe, ginseng or Prunus mume extract on the spoilage microorganisms of soybean sprouts were investigated by paper disk method. The mixture (BAAG) of BAAC and ginseng extract showed the remarkable antimicrobial activity in the result of the experiment. Therefore, we used BAAG as pre-soaking and cultivating solution of soybean sprouts. Total bacterial and Escherichia coli cell count of soybean sprouts pre-soaked and cultivated in the BAAG-diluted solution (50 ppm) showed 2.5 ${\times}$ 10 CFU/mL and 1.3 ${\times}$ 10 cfu/mL in comparison with 3.5 ${\times}$ 10$^3$ cfu/mL and 5.8 ${\times}$ 10$^3$ cfu/mL of the control, respectively. BAAG-treated soybean sprouts also showed no slimy brown product and undesirable odor characterized in the control. It was confirmed that BAAG could be a proper pre-soaking and cultivating solution of soybean sprouts.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of vitrification solution(VS) on in vitro developmental competence of immature porcine oocytes. The immature porcine oocytes were exposed to the following vitrification solution, at RT. 1) EFS sol. : 20% ethylene glycol (EG) 3 min, 40% EG + 18%(w/v) Ficoll(MV70, 000) + 0.3 M sucrose 30 sec, 2) GE sol. : 10% glycerol 5 min, 10% G + 20% EG 5 min, 25% G +25% EG 30 sec, 3) EG sol : 1.5M EG 2.5 min, 5.5 M EG + 1.0 M sucrose 30 sec. Oocytes were immediately transferred into 1.0 M, 0.5 M, 0.25 M, 0125 M, 0 M sucrose solution for 2.5 min each at RT. After removal of VS, immature oocytes were matured in vitro and subsequently all oocytes were subjected to IVF followed in vitro culture for 7 days. Maturation rates of oocytes were 38.8%, 44.5%, 22.4% and 57.6%, in EFS, EG, GE and Control, respectively, maturation rates of oocytes in EG and Control was significantly higher than EFS and GE(P<0.01). Fertilization rates of oocytes in Control was significantly higher than other treated groups(P<0.05), but no difference were observed among treated groups. Polyspermic rates were no significant difference among four groups. Cleavage rates of oocytes were 21.9%, 47.1%, 19.0% and 65.9%, in EFS, EG, GE and Control, respectively, cleavage rates of oocytes in EG and Control was significantly higher than EFS and GE(P<0.05), but blastocyst formation rates were no significant difference among four groups. These results suggested that the use of EG solution could be a great challenge for reaching a successful vitrification of immature porcine oocytes.

  • Carbonate breccias occur sporadically in the Middle Cambrian Daegi Formation on the southern limb of the Baegunsan Syncline, Taebaeksan Basin. These carbonate breccias have been largely interpreted either as sedimentary breccias or as tectonic, fault-related breccias. Recent study, however, indicates that the majority of these breccias are a solution-collapse breccia which is causally linked to the paleokarstification. Extensive karstification is attributed to prolonged subaerial exposure of the carbonate platform. The exposed surface is a record of interruption in sedimentation on the carbonate platform. In the stratigraphic record, such karst-related post-depositional features are recognized as meteoric diagenetic features, paleosols, and solution-collapse breccias. Solution-collapse breccias are particularly well preserved and most profound in the carbonate rocks below the major unconformities, which also are evidence of prolonged subaerial exposure. The Middle Cambrian Daegi Formation provides an example of solution-collapse breccias. The formation and preservation of the solution-collapse breccias imply that a stratigraphic discontinuity surface (unconformity) can be designated within the Daegi Formation.

  • This paper presents an efficient numerical method for the computation of eigenpair derivatives for a real symmetric eigenvalue problem with distinct and multiple eigenvalues. The method has a very simple algorithm and gives an exact solution. Furthermore, it saves computer sotrage and CPU time. The algorithm preserves not only the symmetricity but also the band width of the matrices, allowing efficient computer storage and solution techniques. Results from the proposed method for calculating the eigenpair derivatives are compared with those from Rudisill and Chu's method and Nelson's method which is known efficient one in the case of distinct natural frequencies. As an example to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method in the case of distinct eigenvalues, a cantilever plate is considered. The design parameter of the cantilever plate is its thickness. For the eigenvalue problem with multiple natural frequencies, the adjacent eigenvectors are used in the algebraic equation as side conditions, lying adjacent to the multiplicity of multiple natural frequency distinct eigenvalues, which appear when design parameter varies. A cantilever beam is used to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method in the case of multiple natural frequencies. Results form the proposed method for calculating the eigenpair derivatives are compared with those from Dailey's method(an amendation of Ojalvo's work) which finds the exact eigenvector derivatives. The design parameter of the cantilever beam is its height. Data is presented showing the amount of CPU time used to compute the first ten eigenpair derivatives by each method. It is important to note that the numerical stability of the proposed method is proved.
