In this paper, we review the latest technical progress and commercialization of stretchable interconnectors, stretchable strain sensors, and stretchable substrates for stretchable electronics. The development of stretchable electronics can pave a way for new applications such as wearable devices, bio-integrated devices, healthcare and monitoring, and soft robotics. The essential components of stretchable electronic devices are stretchable interconnector and stretchable substrate. Stretchable interconnector should have high stretchability and high electrical conductivity as well as stability under severe mechanical deformation. Therefore several nanocomposite-based materials using CNT, graphene, nanowire, and metal flake have been developed. Geometric engineering such as wavy, serpentine, buckled and mesh structure has been well developed. Stretchable substrate should also pose high stretchability and compatibility with stretchable sensing or interconnecting material. We summarize the recent research results of new materials for stretchable interconnector and substrate as well as strain sensors. The Important challenges in development of the stretchable interconnector and substrate are also briefly discussed.
In this research, we developed a biosensor to detect lung cancer-specific biomarker using Anodic Aluminum Oxide (AAO) chip based on interference and nano surface plasmon resonance (nanoSPR). The nano-porous AAO chip was fabricated $2{\mu}m$ of pore-depth by two-step anodizing method for surface uniformity. NanoSPR has sensitivity to the refractive index (RI) of the surrounding medium and also provides simple and label-free detection when specific antibodies are immobilized to the Au-deposited surface of nano-porous AAO chip. To detect the lung cancer-specific biomarker, antibodies were immobilized on the surface of the chip by Self Assembled Monolayer (SAM) method. Since then lung cancer-specific biomarker was applied atop the antibodies immobilized layer. The specific reaction of the antigen-antibody contributed to the change in the refractive index that cause shift of resonance spectrum in the interference pattern. The Limit of Detection (LOD) was 1 fg/ml by using our nano-porous AAO biosensor chip.
Recently, genetic engineering techniques have been used to display various heterologous peptides and proteins (enzyme, antibody, antigen, receptor and fluorescence protein, etc.) on the yeast cell surface. Living cells displaying various enzymes on their surface could be used repeatedly as 'whole cell biocatalysts' like immobilized enzymes. We constructed a yeast based whole cell biocatalyst displaying T. reesei cellobiohydrolase I (CBH I ) on the cell surface and endowed the yeast-cells with the ability to degrade cellulose. By using a cell surface engineering system based on ${\alpha}-agglutinin,$ CBH I was displayed on the cell surface as a fusion protein containing the N-terminal leader peptide encoding a Gly-Ser linker and the $Xpress^{TM}$ epitope. Localization of the fusion protein on the cell surface was confirmed by confocal microscopy. In this study, we report on the genetic immobilization of T. reesei CBH I on the S. cerevisiae and hydrolytic activity of cell surface displayed CBH I.
Finite element analysis(FEA) has been extensively applied in the analyses of biomechanical properties of stents. Geometrically, a closed-cell stent is an assembly of a number of repeated unit cells and exhibits periodicity in both longitudinal and circumferential directions. This study concentrates on various parameters of the FEA models for the analysis of drug-eluting biodegradable polymeric stents for application to the treatment of coronary artery disease. In order to determine the mechanical characteristics of biodegradable polymeric stents, FEA was used to model two different types of stents: tubular stents(TS) and helicoidal stents(HS). For this modeling, epigallocatechin-3-O-gallate (EGCG)-eluting poly[(L-lactide-co-${\varepsilon}$-caprolactone), PLCL] (E-PLCL) was chosen as drug-eluting stent materials. E-PLCL was prepared by blending PLCL with 5% EGCG as previously described. In addition, the effects of EGCG blending on the mechanical properties of PLCL were investigated for both types of stent models. EGCG did not affect tensile strength at break, but significantly increased elastic modulus of PLCL. It is suggested that FEA is a cost-effective method to improve the design of drug-eluting biodegradable polymeric stents.

This paper presents the effect of fusion procedure on the fusion performance of the thermal butt fusion in the safety class III buried HDPE piping per various tests performed, including high speed tensile impact, free bend, blunt notched tensile, notched creep, and PENT tests. The suitability of fusion joints and qualification procedures was evaluated by comparing test results from the base material and buttfusion joints. From the notched tensile test result, it was found that the fused joints have much lower toughness than the base material. It was also identified that the notched tensile test is more desirable than the high speed tensile impact and free bend tests presented in the ASME Code Case N-755-3 as a fusion qualification test method. In addition, with regard to the single low-pressure fusion joint performances, the procedure given by the ISO 21307 was determined to be better that the one specified in the Code Case N-755-3.

Colloids are a heterogeneous system in which particles of a few nanometers to hundreds micrometers in size are finely dispersed in liquid medium, but show homogeneous properties in macroscopic scale. They have attracted much attention not only as model systems of natural atomic and molecular self-assembled structures but also as novel structural materials of practical applications in a wide range of areas. In particular, recent advances in colloidal science have focused on nano-bio materials and devices which are essential for drug discovery and delivery, diagnostics and biomedical applications. In this review, first we introduce nano-bio colloidal systems and surface modification of colloidal particles which creates various functional groups. Then, various methods of fabrication of colloidal particles using holographic lithography, microfluidics and virus templates are discussed in detail. Finally, various applications of colloids in metal inks, three-dimensional photonic crystals and two-dimensional nanopatterns are also reviewed as representative potential applications.
Apoptosis (programmed cell death) is a cellular self-destruction mechanism that is essential for a variety of biological events, such as developmental sculpturing, tissue homeostasis, and the removal of unwanted cells. Mitochondria play a crucial role in regulating cell death. $Ca^{2+}$ has long been recognized as a participant in apoptotic pathways. Mitochondria are known to modulate and synchronize $Ca^{2+}$ signaling. Massive accumulation of $Ca^{2+}$ in the mitochondria leads to apoptosis. The $Ca^{2+}$ dynamics of ER and mitochondria appear to be modulated by the Bcl-2 family proteins, key factors involved in apoptosis. The number and morphology of mitochondria are precisely controlled through mitochondrial fusion and fission process by numerous mitochondria-shaping proteins. Mitochondrial fission accompanies apoptotic cell death and appears to be important for progression of the apoptotic pathway. Here, we highlight and discuss the role of mitochondrial calcium handling and mitochondrial fusion and fission machinery in apoptosis.
Sulfur-substituted $LiMn_{0.9}Cr_{0.1}O_{2-x}S_x$$(0\;\leq\;x\;\leq\;0.1)$ layered oxides have been prepared by solid state reaction under inert atmosphere. From powder X-ray diffraction analyses, all the present lithium manganates were found to be crystallized with monoclinic-layered structure. Electrochemical measurements clearly demonstrated that, in comparison with the pristine $LiMn_{0.9}Cr_{0.1}O_2$, the sulfur-substituted derivatives exhibit smaller discharge capacities for the entire cycle range but the recovery of discharge capacity after the initial several cycles becomes faster upon sulfur substitution. The effect of the sulfur substitution on the chemical bonding nature of $LiMn_{0.9}Cr_{0.1}O_{2-x}S_x$has been investigated using X-ray absorption spectroscopic (XAS) analyses at Mn and Cr K-edges. According to Mn K-edge XAS results, the trivalent oxidation state of manganese ion remains unchanged before and after the substitution whereas the local structure around manganese ions becomes more distorted with increasing the substitution rate of sulfur. On the other hand, the replacement of oxygen with sulfur has negligible influence on the local atomic arrangement around chromium ions, which is surely due to the high octahedral stabilization energy of $Cr^{+III} $ ions. Based on the present experimental findings, we have suggested that the decrease of discharge capacity upon sulfur substitution is ascribable to the enhanced structural distortion of $MnO_6$ octahedra and/or to the formation of covalent Li-S bonds, and the accompanying improvement of cyclability would be related to the depression of Mn migration and/or to the pillaring effect of larger sulfur anion.

We have found out the relationship of nanoemulsion containing nano vitamin C, E and propolis and gingival disease. We've confirmed effect of nanoemulsion through the experiment of in vivo and in vitro. We tested cell viability of gingival fibroblast cells by MTT assay and mRNA appearance of interleukin-$1{\beta}$, using mouse that was guided inflammation. Anti-microbacterial activity for Antibacterial effect's experiment was carried out by using S.aureus and E.coli. In addition, inflammation tissue has been observed with scanning electrical microscopy. In this study, expression of interleukin-$1{\beta}$ was decreased after adding nanoemulsion containing nanovitamin C, E and propolis. We've also obtained good results from the test of Antibacterial effect against S.aureus and E.coli. Also, swelling of inflammation tissues observed by scanning electrical microscopy has gone down. In conclusion, we have gained confidence that nanoemulsion containing nano vitamin C, E and propolis has very high Antibacterial effect against bacteria in oral. And it made us guess that inflammation of gingival reduces after decreasing interleukin-$1{\beta}$. Thus, we expect that nanoemulsion containing nano vitamin C, E and propolis gives good effects to patient having gingival disease.
The aim of this study was to investigate antifungal activity of a range of different molecular weight (MW) chitosan against Penicillium italicum. Our results demonstrate that the antifungal activity was dependent both the MW and concentration of the chitosan. Among a series of chitosan derived from the hydrolysis of high MW chitosan, the fractions containing various sizes of chitosan ranging from 3 to 15 glucosamine units named as chitooligomers-F2 (CO-F2) was found to show the highest antifungal activity against P. italicum. Furthermore, the effect of CO-F2 toward this fungus was significantly reduced in the presence of $Ca^{2+}$, whereas its effect was recovered by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, suggesting that the CO-F2 acts via disruption of $Ca^{2+}$ gradient required for survival of the fungus. Our results suggest that CO-F2 may serve as potential compounds to develop alternatives to synthetic fungicides for the control of the postharvest diseases.
