  • In the Taguchi parameter design, the product-array approach using orthogonal arrays is mainly used. However, it often requires an excessive number of experiments. An alternative approach, which is called the combined-array approach, was suggested by Welch et al (1990) and studied by Vining and Myers (1990) and others. In these studies, only single respouse variable was considered. We propose how to simultaneously optimize multiple responses when there are correlations among responses.

  • Sensitivity information has been used for linearization of nonlinear functions in optimization. Basically, sensitivity is a derivative of a function with respect to a design variable. Design sensitivity is repeatedly calculated in optimization. Since sensitivity calculation is extremely expensive, there are studies to directly use the sensitivity in the design process. When a small design change is required, an engineer makes design changes by considering the sensitivity information. Generally, the current process is performed one-by-one for design variables. Methods to exploit the sensitivity information are developed. When a designer wants to change multiple variables with some relationship, the directional derivative can be utilized. In this case, the first derivative can be calculated. Only small design changes can be made from the first derivatives. Orthogonal arrays can be used for moderate changes of multiple variables. Analysis of Variance is carried out to find out the regional influence of variables. A flow is developed for efficient use of the methods. The sensitivity information is calculated by finite difference method. Various examples are solved to evaluate the proposed algorithm.

  • Adaptive arrays have been proposed as an effective means of mitigating Multiple Access Interference (MAI) and improving the performance of existing and future wireless communication systems. In this paper, we apply the analytical method proposed to analyse the theoretical Mean Bit Error Rate (BER) of an uncoded IS-95 based CDMA system with an array antenna at the BS in a Ricean fading environment. We present a modified expression for the Signal to Interference plus Noise (SINR) ratio as a function of the number of users, number of antennas and noise levels. We also verify the analytical results by means of simulations by considering different user and channel scenarios.

  • The hydraulics of flow within the covered reach of urban streams is very complicated due to the accumulation and interference effect of eddies around the multiple piers supporting the covering slab. An extensive experimental study is done to quantitatively estimate the backwater rise effect caused by various arrays of multiple piers. The factors governing the backwater rise are found out to be the contraction ratio due to the piers, Froude number of the flow, longitudinal pier spacing, and the length of the covered reach. For a single section of lateral pier arrays the effect of contraction ratio and Froude number on the backwater rise is analyzed and a multiple regression equation is derived. The effect of multiple piers, arrayed in both lateral and longitudinal directions, on the backwater rise is analyzed in terms of the contraction ratio, Froude number, longitudinal pier spacing and the total length of the covered reach. A multiple regression equation for the backwater rise estimation is proposed based on the experimental data collected in the present study.

  • A hardware architecture is presented of a wavelet based multiple line addressing driving scheme for passive matrix displays using the FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Arrays), which will be integrated in the scalable video coding $architecture^{[1]}$. The incoming compressed video data stream will then directly be transformed to the required column voltages by the hardware architecture without the need of employing the video decompression.

  • Robust design in industry is an approach to reducing performance variation of quality characteristic values in products and processes. In the Taguchi type robust design, the product array approach using orthogonal arrays is mainly used. However, it often requires an excessive number of experiments. In this paper, for the combined array approach to assign control and noise factors, we propose how to simultaneously optimize multiple quality characteristics. Two examples are illustrated to show the difference between the product-array approach and the combined-array approach.

  • Compressive Sensing (CS) has been widely studied as a promising technique in many applications. The CS theory tells that a signal that is known to be sparse in a specific basis can be reconstructed using convex optimization from far fewer samples than traditional methods use. In this paper, we apply CS technique to Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems which employ uniform linear arrays (ULA). Especially, we investigate the problem of finding the direction-of-arrival (DOA) using CS technique and compare the performance with the conventional adaptive MIMO techniques. The results suggest the CS method can provide the similar performance with far fewer snapshots than the conventional adaptive techniques.
