Unit Root Test for Temporally Aggregated Autoregressive Process

  • Unit root test for temporally aggregated first order autoregressive process is considered. The temporal aggregate of fist order autoregression is an autoregressive moving average of order (1,1) with moving average parameter being function of the autoregressive parameter. One-step Gauss-Newton estimators are proposed and are shown to have the same limiting distribution as the ordinary least squares estimator for unit root when complete observations are available. A Monte-Carlo simulation shows that the temporal aggregation have no effect on the size. The power of the suggested test are nearly the same as the powers of the test based on complete observations.

  • For autoregressive moving average (ARMA) models, robust unit root tests are developed using M-estimators. The tests are parametric in the sense ARMA parameters are estimated jointly with unit roots. A Monte-Carlo experiment reveals superiority of the parametric tests over the semipararmetric tests of Lucas (1995a) in terms of both empirical sizes and powers.

  • We consider the asymptotic results of the variance ratio statistic when the underlying processes have moving average(MA) unit roots. This degenerate situation of zero spectral density near the origin cause the limit of the variance ratio to become zero. Its asymptotic behaviors are different from non-degenerating case, where the convergence rate of the variance ratio statistic is formally derived.

ARMA Modeling for Nonstationary Time Series Data without Differencing

  • For possibly nonstationary autoregressive moving average, modeling based on the original observations rather than the differenced observations is considered. Under this scheme, sample autocorrelation functions, parameter estimates, model diagnostic statistics, and prediction are all computed from the original data instead of the differenced data. The methods and results established under stationarity of data are shown to naturally extend to the nonstationarity of one autoregressive unit root. The sample ACF and PACF can be used for ARMA order determination. The BIC order is strongly consistent. The parameter estimates are asymptotically normal. The portmanteau statistic has chi-square distribution. The predictor is asymptotically equivalent to that based on the differenced data.

Comparisons of RDII Predictions Using the RTK-based and Regression Methods (RTK 방법 및 회귀분석 방법을 이용한 RDII 예측 결과 비교)

  • In this study, the RDII predictions were compared using two methodologies, i.e., the RTK-based and regression methods. Long-term (1/1/2011~12/31/2011) monitoring data, which consists of 10-min interval streamflow and the amount of precipitation, were collected at the domestic study area (1.36 km2 located in H county), and used for the construction of the RDII prediction models. The RTK method employs super position of tri-triangles, and each triangle (called, unit hydrograph) is defined by three parameters (i.e., R, T and K) determined/optimized using Genetic Algorithm (GA). In regression method, the MovingAverage (MA) filtering was used for data processing. Accuracies of RDII predictions from these two approaches were evaluated by comparing the root mean square error (RMSE) values from each model, in which the values were calculated to 320.613 (RTK method) and 420.653 (regression method), respectively. As a results, the RTK method was found to be more suitable for RDII prediction during extreme rainfall event, than the regression method.

  • This paper develops a model to forecast container volumes of all Korean seaports using a Seasonal ARIMA (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average) technique with the quarterly data from the year of 1994 to 2010. In order to verify forecasting accuracy of the SARIMA model, this paper compares the predicted volumes resulted from the SARIMA model with the actual volumes. Also, the forecasted volumes of the SARIMA model is compared to those of an ARIMA model to demonstrate the superiority as a forecasting model. The results showed the SARIMA Model has a high level of forecasting accuracy and is superior to the ARIMA model in terms of estimation accuracy. Most of the previous research regarding the container-volume forecasting of seaports have been focussed on long-term forecasting with mainly monthly and yearly volume data. Therefore, this paper suggests a new methodology that forecasts shot-term demand with quarterly container volumes and demonstrates the superiority of the SARIMA model as a forecasting methodology.

  • This study develops a forecasting method to estimate air cargo demand from ICN(Incheon International Airport) to all airports in EU with Seasonal Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (SARIMA) Model using volumes from the first quarter of 2000 to the fourth quarter of 2009. This paper shows the superiority of SARIMA Model by comparing the forecasting accuracy of SARIMA with that of other ARIMA (Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average) models. Given that very few papers and researches focuses on air route, this paper will be helpful to researchers concerned with air cargo.

Short-term Forecasting of Power Demand based on AREA (AREA 활용 전력수요 단기 예측)

  • It is critical to forecast the maximum daily and monthly demand for power with as little error as possible for our industry and national economy. In general, long-term forecasting of power demand has been studied from both the consumer's perspective and an econometrics model in the form of a generalized linear model with predictors. Time series techniques are used for short-term forecasting with no predictors as predictors must be predicted prior to forecasting response variables and containing estimation errors during this process is inevitable. In previous researches, seasonal exponential smoothing method, SARMA (Seasonal Auto Regressive Moving Average) with consideration to weekly pattern Neuron-Fuzzy model, SVR (Support Vector Regression) model with predictors explored through machine learning, and K-means clustering technique in the various approaches have been applied to short-term power supply forecasting. In this paper, SARMA and intervention model are fitted to forecast the maximum power load daily, weekly, and monthly by using the empirical data from 2011 through 2013. $ARMA(2,\;1,\;2)(1,\;1,\;1)_7$ and $ARMA(0,\;1,\;1)(1,\;1,\;0)_{12}$ are fitted respectively to the daily and monthly power demand, but the weekly power demand is not fitted by AREA because of unit root series. In our fitted intervention model, the factors of long holidays, summer and winter are significant in the form of indicator function. The SARMA with MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) of 2.45% and intervention model with MAPE of 2.44% are more efficient than the present seasonal exponential smoothing with MAPE of about 4%. Although the dynamic repression model with the predictors of humidity, temperature, and seasonal dummies was applied to foretaste the daily power demand, it lead to a high MAPE of 3.5% even though it has estimation error of predictors.

  • The convenient techniques for predicting the bus arrival time have used the data obtained from the buses belong to the same company only. Consequently, the conventional techniques have often failed to predict the bus arrival time at the downstream bus stops due to the lack of the data during congestion time period. The primary objective of this study is to overcome the weakness of the conventional techniques. The estimation model developed based on the data obtained from Bus Information System(BIS) and Bus management System(BMS). The proposed model predicts the bus arrival time at bus stops by using the data of all buses travelling same roadway section during the same time period. In the tests, the proposed model had a good accuracy of predicting the bus arrival time at the bus stops in terms of statistical measurements (e.g., root mean square error). Overall, the empirical results were very encouraging: the model maintains a prediction job during the morning and evening peak periods and delivers excellent results for the severely congested roadways that are of the most practical interest.
