Synthesis and Permeation Characteristics of Zeolite Membranes

  • Introduction : Membranes made from inorganic materials are generally superior to organo-polymeric materials in thermal and mechanical stability, and chemical resistance. Among inorganic materials zeolite is a promising candidate for a high performance membrane because of the unique characteristics of zeolite crystals such as molecular sieving, ion exchange, selective adsorption and catalysis. Although there are many recent reportsl on the preparation of zeolitc membranes and the gas permeation through the membranes, only a limited number of publications deal with pervaporation studies. Recently, we have reported a high pervaporation performance of NaA zeolite membrane for the separation of water/organic liquid mixtures. and of NaY zeolite menlbrane for the separation of methanol/MTBE. Here, preparation of zeolite (LTA, ZSM-5 and FAU) membranes and their permeation properties are discussed.

Stability and Electronic Properties of the Adsorption of Molecular Hydrogen on Metal-containing Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes

  • The binding ability and hydrogen storage capacity of nitrogen doped carbon nanotube with divacancy (4NDCNxNT) that is decorated with transition metals was investigated based on density functional theory calculations. Results indicate that scandium shows an ideal reversible hydrogen binding capability with promising system-weight efficiency compared with other transition metals when functionalized with 4ND-CNxNT. The (Sc/4ND)10-CNxNT can store up to 50H2 molecules, corresponding to a maximum gravimetric density of 5.8 wt%. Detailed structural stability and electronic properties were reported as hydrogen molecules were absorbed. It takes about 0.16 eV/H2 to add one H2 molecule, which assures reversible storage of H2 molecules under ambient conditions.

  • Multilayer films of inorganic analogues of Langmuir-Blodgett films have been prepared on silicon and gold substrates and characterized by ellipsometry, XPS, FT-IRRS, and electrochemical measurements. The deposition technique requires first covalent attachment or adsorption of a phosphonic acid anchoring agent; $HO(CH_3)(CH_2)_2Si(CH_2)_3PO_3H_2$ and $[-S(CH_2)_4PO_3H_2]_2$ were used with Si and Au, respectively. The functionalized substrates are exposed alternately to aqueous $ZrOCl_2$ and l,l0-decanediylbis(phosphonic acid) solutions to yield multilayer films. Surface-sensitive probes show that the films are compact and grow in an oriented fashion suggestive of good structural order.

Adsorption Property of Shrimp Shell Chitosan to Water Soluble Proteins (수용성 단백질에 대한 새우껍질 Chitosan의 흡착 특성)

  • 수산물 가공시 흘러나오는 폐수 중에 함유되어 있는 수용성 단백질을 chitosan에 흡착시키기 위하여 albumin과 hemoglobin, albumin-myoglobin 혼합단백질을 이용하여 chitosan과의 흡착 및 chitosan 제조조건에 따른 흡착효과와 chitosan의 수용성 단백질 흡착에 미치는 인자를 살펴본 결과는 다음과 같다. Chitosan위 탈아세틸화 조건을 60, 70, 80%로 달리하여, albumin, hemoglobin, albumin-myoglobin 혼합용액에 적용했을때 chitosan의 탈아세틸화도가 높을수록 chitosan과 단백질 사이의 흡착률은 높게 나타났다. 초음파 처리에 의하여 chitosan의 분자량이 작을수록 chitosan과 단백질 사이의 흡착률은 높게 나타났다. pH변화에 따른 chitosan과 수용성 단백질의 흡착률은 albumin 및 albumin-myoglobin 혼합용액에서는 pH 4.0에서, hemoglobin용액에서는 pH 7.0에서 흡착률이 높게 나타났다 chitosan과 수용성단백질과의 흡착에서 반응시간은 albumin및 albumin-myoglobin 혼합용액에서는 4시간, hemoglobin용액에서는 3시간까지 흡착률이 증가하였고, 그 이후의 시간이 경화하여도 흡착률의 증가는 거의 보이지 않았다. 수용성 단백질 용액에 NaCl 농도를 0.1M에서 1.0M로 증가시켜 첨가했을때 염의 농도가 높을수록 chitosan과 단백질 사이의 흡착이 잘 일어나지 않았다.

Binding Characteristics of Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for Ibuprofen Enantiomers (아이뷰프로펜 이성질체에 대한 molecularly imprinted polymers의 binding 특성)

  • The molecularly imprinted polymers(MIPs) synthesized at various polymerization conditions were examined as ibuprofen receptors in terms of binding characteristics. The 4-vinylpyridine polymers had 1.2 times higher adsorption capability for (S)-(+)-ibuprofen than the methacrylic acid polymers. The methacrylic acid polymers synthesized by UV radiation had 1.9 times higher selectivity for (S)-(+)-ibuprofen compared to those by thermal initiation. Effects of various solvents for binding were also examined in this research. According to the Scatchard analysis, the (S)-(+)-ibuprofen artificial receptors had two different kinds of binding sites for (S)-(+)-ibuprofen while having only single kind of binding site for ketoprofen. The binding sites of (S)-(+)-ibuprofen, n were calculated as 4.3~4.9 $\mu$mol/g and the dissociation constants, $K_D$ were 0.68 mM for the specific binding.

  • Ozone is ambient gas which is useful for the fabrication of metal oxide thin films under conditions of molecular beam epitaxy. Ozone is condensed by the adsorption method and its concentration is analyzed using the thermal decomposition method. The concentration of ozone exceeds 90 mol% and ozone is supplied for a sufficiently long time to grow oxide thin films. The ozone concentration is also evaluated using a quadrupole mass analyzer and the accuracy of this method is compared with the results of the thermal decomposition method.

  • Phthalocyanine, a water soluble porphyrin derivative and dye, is known to inhibit the mutagenic and carcinogenic actions of compounds having polycyclic structures, e.g. heterocyclic amines. There is evidence that this adsorbent effect shows by a complex formation between the porphyrin-like structure of phthalocyanine and the planar molecular surfaces of theses compounds. That phthalocyanine can form an insoluble material when mixed with chitosan, a polyglucosamine, and that the solid chitosan-phthalocyanine, named Eco-Blue, thus prepared can efficiently adsorb polycyclic mutagenic compounds. The adsorption was experimented by UV/VIS spectrometry. The adsorbent effects of mutagens and carcinogens was identified by Gas chromatography (GC) and Ames Test. The adsorbed polycyclic mutagens were elutable with buffer, but only to small extents. Chitosan-phthalocyanine may be expected to be useful as an adsorbent against polycyclic mutagens and carcinogens.

  • To improve the blood compatibility of chitosan membranes, 2-(methacryloyloxy)-ethyl-2-(trimethylammonium)ethyl phosphate(MTP), which is a methacrylate with phospholipid polar groups, was grafted on the surface of chitosan membranes and the biocompatibility of MTP-grafted chitosan membranes was investigated. The permeation coefficient gradually decreased with increasing in molecular weights of biocomponents below 10$^{4}$, and drastically decreased above 10$^{4}$. This result corresponds with the permeability of solutes in case of hemodialysis membranes. The MTP-grafted chitosan membranes displayed less blood cell adhesion than the chitosan membranes. This may due to the formation of biomembrane4ike surface by adsorption and arrangement of phospholipid molecules from serum onto the MTP copolymer surface.

  • Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed by the adsorption of alkanethiols, HS(CH2)nX, where X is an organic functional group, onto gold surfaces have attracted widespread interest as templates for the fabrication of molecular and biomolecular microstructures. Previously photopatterning has been thought of as being restricted to the micron scale, because of the well-known diffraction limit. So, we have explored a novel approach to nanofabrication by utilizing a femtosecond laser.

Characterization of an $\alpha$-Glucosidase Inhibitor Produced by Streptomyces sp. CK-4416

  • An $\alpha$-glucosidase inhibitor, CK-4416, was identified from the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. CK-4416. CK-4416, which had some specificity against intestinal disaccharidases, especially sucrase and matlase activities, was purified by adsorption and cationic ion exchange chromatographies. The molecular formula was determined to be $C_{37}H_{63}NO_{30}$ (MW 1001.31) by FAB-MS and NMR analyses. In vitro studies found CK-4416 to show a potent inhibitory activity against sucrase and maltase, but it had low inhibition against $\alpha$-amylase.
