  • The modified arc-length algorithms for the automatic incremental solution of nonlinear finite element equations proposed by Riks are presented, which comprise the cylindrical arc-length method and the normal arc-length method. These methods are developed to trace the nonlinear path of large displacement problems such as a pre and post bucking/collapse response of general structures. These methods are applied to analyse the nonlinear behavior of arch and shell problems in parallel with the standard and modified Newton-Raphson method.

  • A solution method is presented to solve the eigenvalue problem arising in the dynamic analysis of nonclassicary damped structural systems with multiple eigenvalues. The proposed method is obtained by applying the modified Newton-Raphson technique and the orthonormal condition of the eigenvectors to the linear eigenproblem through matrix augmentation of the quadratic eigenvalue problem. In the iteration methods such as the inverse iteration method and the subspace iteration method, singularity may be occurred during the factorizing process when the shift value is close to an eigenvalue of the system. However, even though the shift value is an eigenvalue of the system, the proposed method provides nonsingularity, and that is analytically proved. Since the modified Newton-Raphson technique is adopted to the proposed method, initial values are need. Because the Lanczos method effectively produces better initial values than other methods, the results of the Lanczos method are taken as the initial values of the proposed method. Two numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and the results are compared with those of the well-known subspace iteration method and the Lanczos method.

  • In most boundary estimation algorithms estimation in EIT (Electrical Impedance Tomography), anomaly boundaries can be expressed with Fourier series and the unknown coefficients are estimated with proper inverse algorithms. Furthermore, the number of anomalies is assumed to be available a priori. The prior knowledge on the number of anomalies may be unavailable in some cases, and we need to determine the number of anomalies with other methods. This paper presents an algorithm for the boundary estimation in EIT (Electrical Impedance Tomography) using the prior information from the conventional Newton-Raphson method. Although Newton-Raphson method generates so poor spatial resolution that the anomaly boundaries are hardly reconstructed, even after a few iterations it can give general feature of the object to be imaged such as the number of anomalies, their sizes and locations, as long as the anomalies are big enough. Some numerical experiments indicate that the Newton-Raphson method can be used as a good predictor of the unknown boundaries and the proposed boundary discrimination algorithm has a good performance.

  • In boundary estimation in Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT), conventional method is the modified Newton Raphson (mNR) method .The mNR is famous for good method since has good convergence and robustness against noisy data. But the mNR is low efficiency to get and update Jacobian matrix. So, the mNR become very slow algorithm. We propose the Quasi Newton (QN) method to improve efficiency which will lead to speed up in boundary estimation. The QN can improve a low efficiency by using estimated Jacobian matrix contrary to using exactly calculated Jacobian matrix, this used by the mNR. And finally, we propose the modified Quasi Newton (mQN) method because the QN has some problems such as bad early convergence rate and instability of 'divided by zero'. For the verification of the propose method, numerical experiments are conducted and the results show a good performance.

  • In this study, a usefulness of the iterative solution procedures is reviewed for the elasto-plastic large deflection analysis of imperfect plates by finite element method. Three typical solution techniques such as simple incremental(SI) method, Newton-Raphson(NR) method and modified Newton-Raphson (mNR) method are compared. It is concluded that for thin plates which are given rise to the large deflection, iteration for the convergence of the unbalance force should be performed and in this case mNR method is more useful than NR method since the computing time of the former becomes to be a half of the latter, in which the accuracy of the result remains same. For thick plates or thin plates with large initial deflection, however, the use of SI method is quite better since the unbalance force may be negligible.

  • In EIT(electrical impedance tomography), the internal resistivity(or conductivity) distribution of the unknown object is estimated using the boundary voltage data induced by different current patterns using various reconstruction algorithms. In this paper, we present a regularized modified Newton-Raphson(mNR) scheme which employs additional a priori information in the cost functional as soft constraint and the weighting matrices in the cost functional are selected based on the exponentially weighted least square criterion. The computer simulation for the 32 channels synthetic data shows that the reconstruction performance of the proposed scheme is improved compared to that of the conventional regularized mNR at the expense of slightly increased computational burden.

  • This paper presents a new eigenvalue calculation methods in AESOPS algorithm. The source program of the AESOPS algorithm is modified to practice in PC environment. Window95 is used as an operating system of PC and MicroSoft Power Station is used to compile the fortran source program. The heuristically approximated eigenvalue calculation method of the AESOPS algorithm is transformed to the Newton Raphson Method which is largely used in the nonlinear numerical analysis. The new methods are developed from the AESOPS algorithm and thus only a few calculation steps are added to practice the proposed algorithm.

  • The plastic deformation behavior of additively manufactured anisotropic structures are analyzed using the finite element method (FEM). Hill's quadratic anisotropic yield function is used, and a modified return-mapping method based on dual potential is presented. The plane stress biaxial loading condition is considered to investigate the number of iterations required for the convergence of the Newton-Raphson method during plastic deformation analysis. In this study, incompressible plastic deformation is considered, and the associated flow rule is assumed. The modified return-mapping method is implemented using the ABAQUS UMAT subroutine and effective in reducing the number of iterations in the Newton-Raphson method. The anisotropic tensile behavior is computed using the 3-dimensional FEM for two tensile specimens manufactured along orthogonal additive directions.

  • In this study, validity and limitation of the estimation of roughness coefficient using the measured field data are investigated and the errors of the calculated roughness coefficient are analyzed. The assumption of uniform flow led to much difference of the computed results in low flow, and this is due to change of the cross-section informations such as flow area and hydraulic radius rather than the difference of velocity head. From the comparison between the estimations of average roughness coefficient in the reach which is relatively long, the calculation using the modified Newton-Raphson method is very efficient and accurate. In the measured roughness coefficient, the errors of measured flow and stage are included and the lower flow is, the larger the magnitude of error of measured roughness coefficient is. But the error of depth and velocity associated with uncertainty of roughness coefficient is less than about 5% in the both of low and high flow, and it shows the validity of measured roughness coefficient.
