  • The intra prediction technique is the one of the key factors to the success of H.264. There are nine optional prediction modes for each $4{\times}4$ luma block and 4 modes for each $16{\times}16$ luma block. To reduce the intra mode bits efficiently, the most probable mode (MPM) is estimated by using the intra modes of the adjacent blocks, since intra modes for neighboring $4{\times}4$ luma blocks are correlated. In this paper, a new method for estimating the MPM is proposed by using the statistical distribution of intra modes of adjacent intra blocks. Experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve a coding gain of about 0.1dB.

  • This paper introduces a method for calculation of dynamic stress occurring in flexible bodies of a moving multibody system by using commercial softwares DADS for dynamic analysis and MSC/NASTRAN for finite element analysis. Three methods for model transient response analysis of a flexible body are summarized. Elastic deformation of a flexible body can be described with normal modes and static modes composed of constraint modes and residual attachment modes. The deformation modes divided into fixed-interface modes and free-interface modes can be determined by using MSC/NASTRAN and selected for dynamic analysis. The dynamic results obtained from DADS are utilized to calculate dynamic stress by using mode-displacement method or mode-acceleration method of MSC/NASTRAN. As a numerical example of the analysis, we used a three dimensional slider-crank model with a flexible connecting rod.

  • Shaping an input command through considering the resonant modes of multi degrees of freedom system, it is possible to realize the wanted motion, without exciting the uncontrollable modes of the flexible system. But, an increase of modes to be considered brings inevitably about the time delay due to an excessive rising time. On the purpose of reducing the rising time, only the interesting and dominant modes can be considered to determine the timing pulses of input shaper. In this paper, an effect of shaper by the partial modes is analysed for a specific system and the input shapers by the partial modes are analysed for three d.o.f damped system, using Matlab simulation.

  • This paper investigates the linear stability of wakes with special emphasis on the difference of velocity and density. Velocity and density profiles for laminar flows have gaussian profiles. Incompressible wakes have two generalized inflection points and two unstable modes-sinuous and varicose modes. Sinuous modes are more unstable than varicose modes irrespective of density variation, which shows wakes will be destabilized by sinuous modes. Large velocity difference and density difference leads to more unstable wakes due to large momentum difference.

  • Directional emission of light exiting a photonic crystal waveguide by a coherent action of radiative surface modes was recently demonstrated, and subsequently the substantial enhancement of the directional emission was achieved by engineering the surface and adjusting relevant parameters. Here we present the analysis of surface modes causing the enhanced emission by the plane wave expansion method and the finite-difference time-domain method. In particular, surface band structures are calculated for nonradiative and radiative surface modes, respectively, and intensity profiles of some representative modes for nonradiative and radiative cases are given.

  • It is shown, in nonlinear two-degree-of freedom system, that the bifurcating modes are created by the stability changes of normal modes. There are four types of stability criterion, each of which gives rise to a distinct functional form of bifurcating modes; the bifurcating mode is born in the form of eigenfunction through which the stability is changed. Then a procedure is formulated to compute the bifurcating mode by the method of harmonic balance. Application of bifurcating mode to forced vibrations is introduced.

  • In the present paper nonlinear normal modes of a rotor system is studied. The methodology to obtain the nonlinear normal modes is based on center manifold reduction technique. It also provides a way of nonlinear coordinate transform from the physical cordinates to the modal coordinates and an idea of individual nonlinear modal dynamics. In order to apply the present method to a rotor dynamics a single mass rotor system on nonlinear elastic supports is employed and the nonlinear normal modes of the system are obtained.

  • It is shown that the two mode representations, one with vector modes and the other with scalar modes, for the cross spectral density matrices of electromagnetic beams are equivalent to each other. In particular, we suggest a method to find the vector modes from the scalar modes and formulate the cross spectral density matrix as a correlation matrix.

  • This paper investigates and compares the natural modes and static reponses of moduled and one-bodied floating structures. Equations for calculating natural modes and static responses are formulated by finite element method and the natural modes are solved by subspace iteration method. A floating parking place whose length is 120 m and width 60 m is considered as an example structure.

  • Longitudinal vibration of an axially moving material is investigated by using the assumed modes method. To circumvent a difficulty in choosing the comparison functions which satisfy the boundary conditions, the assumed modes method is adopted by which equations of motion are discretized. Based on the discretized equations, the complex eigenvalue problem is solved and then the effects of the translating velocity on the natural frequencies and modes are analyzed.
