This paper presents a vibration-rejection control design for a magnetic suspension system which has strong non-linearity, open-loop unstable characteristics, high-order flexible modes, and parameter variations. The target plant to be controlled consists of a U-core electromagnet and a flexible rail. We describe the test rig and formulate the mathematical model and then we set up a control problem as the mixed sensitivity problem where the augmented plant is constructed with frequency weighting functions and the feedback controller is designed by using the H$\infty$ controller. The effectiveness of the designed controller for the magnetic suspension system with high-order flexible modes is validated and justified using several simulations. These results show that the magnetic suspension system is robustly stable against disturbance and gives the well-damped tracking performance ...

In this study, we investigate the accuracy of higher order derivatives in the moving least square (MLS) difference method. An interpolation function is constructed by employing a Taylor series expansion via MLS approximation. The function is then applied to the mixed variational theorem in which the displacement and stress resultants are treated as independent variables. The higher order derivatives are evaluated by solving simply supported beams and cantilevers. The results are compared with the analytical solutions in terms of the order of polynomials, support size of the weighting function, and number of nodes. The accuracy of the higher order derivatives improves with the employment of the mean value theorem, especially for very high-order derivatives (e.g., above fourth-order derivatives), which are important in a classical asymptotic analysis.

In this pater, authors derive the state - space equiation about the patallel - type inverted pendulum which is adopted as control object, and constitute the control system by $H_\infty$control theory. The modeling error is unavoidably existed by linearization error, and so on. We regard this modeling error which is determined from the identification through frequency response as unstructured model uncertainty. An augmented state - space equiation with frequency weighting function is constructed for application of the $H_\infty$theory, and the mixed sensitivity problem is considered. The weighting functions are determined in consideration of the model uncertainty and the response of system in frequency region. The $H_\infty$controller is designed by using software package for controller design. From results of response simulation, the control system designed with $H_\infty$theory guarantees low sensitivity for disturbance as well as robustness against the model uncertainties.
The current study examined English-speaking adult learners' production and perception of L2 Korean stops (/t/ or /t'/ or /th/) to investigate whether the two modalities are linked in utilizing voice onset time (VOT) and fundamental frequency (F0) for the L2 sound distinction and how the learners' L2 proficiency mediates the relationship. Twenty-two English-speaking learners of Korean living in Seoul participated in the word-reading task of producing stop-initial words and the identification task of labelling CV stimuli synthesized to vary VOT and F0. Using logistic mixed-effects regression models, we quantified group- and individual-level weights of the VOT and F0 cues in differentiating the tense-lax, lax-aspirated, and tense-aspirated stops in Korean. The results showed that the learners as a group relied on VOT more than F0 both in production and perception (except the tense-lax pair), reflecting the dominant role of VOT in their L1 stop distinction. Individual-level analyses further revealed that the learners' L2 proficiency was related to their use of F0 in L2 production and their use of VOT in L2 perception. With this effect of L2 proficiency controlled in the partial correlation tests, we found a significant correlation between production and perception in using VOT and F0 for the lax-aspirated stop contrast. However, the same correlation was absent for the other stop pairs. We discuss a contrast-specific role of acoustic cues to address the non-uniform patterns of the production-perception link in the L2 sound learning context.

The present study investigated the effect of enzyme inclusion on silage quality using meta-analysis tool. A total of 16 research papers reporting the effect of enzyme application on silage quality were employed in the meta-analysis of this study. Mixed model for integrating quantitative results from multiple studies was used first to calculate the predicted error of each study. Individual error from the estimated model was the applied into standard deviation of each study to calculate the mean difference. Finally, summary effect was determined using standard mean difference (SMD) and inversed variance weighting. Mixed model analysis and SMD analysis showed the same effect patterns in all analysis items. Enzyme inclusion in silage significantly (p < 0.05) altered all silage quality characteristics investigated compared to control when enzyme was not included. Our results showed that enzyme treatment increased dry matter content, preserved crude protein effectively, and elevated water soluble carbohydrate content. However, the pH value, acetic acid, propionic acid, neutral detergent fiber, and acid detergent fiber contents in silage with enzyme inclusion were lower than those of the control.
An empirical predictive relationship correlating bracketed duration to earthquake magnitude, site-to-source distance, and local site conditions (i.e. rock vs. stiff soil) for stable continental regions of North America is presented herein. The correlation was developed from data from 620 horizontal motions for central and eastern North America (CENA), consisting of 28 recorded motions and 592 scaled motions. The bracketed duration data was comprised of nonzero and zero durations. The non-linear mixed-effects regression technique was used to fit a predictive model to the nonzero duration data. To account for the zero duration data, logistic regression was conducted to model the probability of zero duration occurrences. Then, the probability models were applied as weighting functions to the NLME regression results. Comparing the bracketed durations for CENA motions with those from active shallow crustal regions (e.g. western North America: WNA), the motions in CENA have longer bracketed durations than those in the WNA. Especially for larger magnitudes at far distances, the bracketed durations in CENA tend to be significantly longer than those in WNA.
This paper discusses an entire procedure for a robust controller design and its implementation of an AMB (active magnetic bearing) spindle, which is part II of the papers presenting details of system modeling and robust control of an AMB spindle. Since there are various uncertainties in an AMB system and reliability is the most important factor for applications, robust control naturally gains attentions in this field. However, tight evaluations of various uncertainties based on experimental data and appropriate performance weightings for an AMB spindle are still ongoing research topics. In addition, there are few publications on experimental justification of a designed robust controller. In this paper, uncertainties for the AMB spindle are classified and described based on the measurement and identification results of part I, and an appropriate performance weighting scheme for the AMB spindle is developed. Then, a robust control is designed through the mixed ${\mu}$ synthesis based on the validated accurate nominal model of part I, and the robust controller is reduced considering its closed loop performance. The reduced robust controller is implemented and confirmed with measurements of closed-loop responses. The AMB spindle is operated up to 57,600 rpm and performance of the designed controller is compared with a benchmark PID controller through experiments. Experiments show that the robust controller offers higher stiffness and more efficient control of rigid modes than the benchmark PID controller.

This article describes a new recognition algorithm using correlation coefficient for intelligent wheelchair to avoid collision for elderly or disabled people. The correlation coefficient can be used to represent the relationship of two different areas. The algorithm has three steps: Firstly, we extract an edge vector using the Histogram of Oriented Gradients(HOG) which includes gradient information and unique magnitude for each cell. From this result, the correlation coefficients are calculated between one cell and others. Secondly, correlation coefficients are used as the weighting factors for normalizing the HOG cell. And finally, these features are used to classify or detect variable and complicated shapes of two wheelers using Adaboost algorithm. In this paper, we propose a new feature vectors which is calculated by weighted cell unit to classify with multiple view-based shapes: frontal, rear and side views($60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$ and mixed angle). Our experimental results show that two wheeler detection system based on a proposed approach leads to a higher detection accuracy than the method using traditional features in a similar detection time.
The process of semiconductor(IC Package) manufacturing usually includes lots of complex and sequential processes. Many kinds of equipments are installed with the mixed concept of serial and parallel manufacturing system. The business environments of the semiconductor industry have been changed frequently, because new technologies are developed continuously. It is the main reason of new investment plan and layout consideration. However, it is difficult to change the layout after installation, because the major equipments are expensive and difficult to move. Furthermore, it is usually a multiple-objective problem. Thus, new investment or layout change should be carefully considered when the production environments likewise product mix and production quantity are changed. This paper introduces a simulation case study of a Korean company that produces packaging substrates(especially lead frames) and requires multi-objective decision support. $QUEST^{(R)}$ is used for simulation modelling and AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) and DEA(Data Envelopment Analysis) are used for weighting of qualitative performance measures and solving multiple-objective layout problem, respectively.
Survey research, data is commonly collected through a sample design with complex design features that allow the relative efficiency on the precision of an estimator to be measured using the concept of the design effect compared to simple random sampling as a reference design. This concept is most useful when the design effect can be expressed as a function of various design features. We propose a design effect formula suitable under a stratified multistage sampling by generalizing Gabler et al. (1999, 2006)'s approaches for multistage sampling. Its use can either guide improvement in the design efficiency when in design stage or enable the evaluation of the adopted design features afterwards.
