  • Generally speaking, because of complexity of engineering process, the systems engineering may be not easy to understand clearly and not easy to perform also. The status of systems engineering infrastructure of the some Korean industry is not matured yet, i.e., the systems engineering process, method, tool and environment is not implemented consistently within the steel making industry. These difficulties are more severe at the concept and basic design phase than the detail design phase relatively. Korean industry has lots of development project for the precedented systems and usually has matured domain knowledge for the precedented systems. Even though there is a mature domain knowledge of the precedented systems, the development project will lead to failure under the condition of engineering system is not well equipped. For the project success, it is very important to have a proper engineering execution system especially for the concept design and basic phase, which has a high abstraction and a large influence on the whole project. This paper proposes a minimized design process that can be easily applied to the concept and basic design phase of the precedented systems, instead of complex system engineering processes. This paper also proposes the application case of the minimized design process and methods for a Blast Furnace System.

  • This paper presents a methodology for classifying left and right motor imagery using a neural network with weighted fuzzy membership functions (NEWFM) and wavelet-based feature extraction. Wavelet coefficients are extracted from electroencephalogram(EEG) signal by wavelet transforms in the first step. In the second step, sixty numbers of initial features are extracted from wavelet coefficients by the frequency distribution and the amount of variability in frequency distribution. The distributed non-overlap area measurement method selects the minimized number of features by removing the worst input features one by one, and then minimized six numbers of features are selected with the highest performance result. The proposed methodology shows that accuracy rate is 86.43% with six numbers of features.

  • This paper proposes the direct detection method of phase angle for the power source, which is based on the PLL method. The proposed method using a bidirectional photo-coupler is used to directly detect the zero crossing of phase voltage and calculate the angular frequency in the controller based on a M/T algorithm. Through the method, the additional installation space in the traditional method using a potential transformer can be minimized and it can be easy to design. The paper presents straightforward schematic circuits, design and experimental results.

  • An efficient method to predict the convection heat transfer coefficients on the top surface of the engine piston is proposed. The method is based on the inverse method of the thermal conduction problem and uses a numerical optimization technique. In the method, the heat transfer coefficients are numerically obtained so that the difference between analyzed temperatures from the finite element method and measured temperatures is minimized. The method can be effectively used to analyze the temperature distribution of engine pistons in case when application of prescribed-temperature boundary condition is not reasonable because of insufficient number of measured temperatures. A hollow sphere problem with an analytic solution is taken as a simple example and accuracy and efficiency is demonstrated. The method is applied to a practical large liquid petroleum gas(LPG) engine piston and the heat transfer coefficients on the top surface of the piston is successfully calculated. Resulting analyzed temperature favorably coincides with measured temperature.

  • Vibration of a non-linear system under random parametric excitations was evaluated by probabilistic methods. The non-linear characteristic terms of a system structure were quasi-linearized and excitation terms were remained as they were An analytical method where the square mean of error was minimized was used An alternative method was an energy method where the damping energy and restoring energy of the linearized system were equalized to those of the original non-linear system. The numerical results were compared with those obtained by Monte Carlo simulation. The comparison showed the results obtained by Monte Carlo simulation located between those by the analytical method and those by the energy method.

  • In many instances a concise form of logic is often required for building today's complex systems. The method described in this paper can be used for a wide range of industrial applications that requires Boolean type of logic minimization. Unlike some of the previous logic minimization methods, the proposed method can be used to better gain insights into the logic minimization process. Based on the decimal valued matrix, the method described here can be used to find an exact minimized solution for a given Boolean function. It is a visual based method that primarily relies on grouping the cell values within the matrix. At the same time, the method is systematic to the extent that it can also be computerized. Constructing the matrix to visualize a logic minimization problem should be relatively easy for the most part, particularly if the computer-generated graphs are accompanied.

  • In repairing and reinforcing modem architecture, altering the features must be minimized. We concluded that inserting CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforcement Polymer) plate method is the most appropriate reinforcing method that minimize altering the features. This study focuses on the effect of reinforcement by inserting CFRP plate in the timber beam of the modem architecture's roof truss. We concluded that inserting CFRP plate method is highly influenced by its parent material, however, it is obvious that materials had reinforced by this method in general. We guess that this method is applicable to reinforcement in the modern architecture's roof truss in various ways.

  • In this paper, a new pitch extraction method, the area comparison method, is proposed. By the speech production model, the area of the first peak on a pitch interval of speech signals is emphasized. By using the above characteristics, this method have more advantages than the others for pitch extraction. The defective decision caused by an impulsive noise is minimized and the pre-filtering is not necessary for this method, because the intergration of signals takes place in the process.
