  • Modified titanate nanotubes (TNT) were tested for their adsorption of methylene blue (MB) from water solutions. They were obtained from the $TiO_2$ nanopowder using a standard alkaline hydrothermal method but in the stage of acid washing, when the titanate flakes begin to roll into nanotubes, magnetite nanoparticles were added. The $Fe_3O_4$ magnetic nanoparticles with diameter of around 2 nm and 12 nm were used in the tests. Significantly stronger adsorption of MB was observed when smaller nanoparticles were used compared to using larger nanoparticles and compared to the case of unmodified nanotubes. It was shown that the increased adsorption of MB is associated with a more negative value of ${\zeta}$-potential for titanates modified by the ultra-small nanoparticles. In the adsorption experiment, pH 7 was selected. These results may prove to be of great importance in the case of potential applications corresponding to the use of such material for wastewater purification.

  • Recently, crushed fine aggregates are being widely used due to the shortage of natural sand. In Korea, the amount of fine particles under 0.08 mm contained in crushed fine aggregates is restricted to be less than 7%, which is similar to the regulations of ASTM but is still very strict compared to the regulations of the other nations. In addition, the crushed aggregates already have in them about 20% of fine particles under 0.08 mm which occurs while they are crushed. The fine particles are not easy to wash out, and also to maximize the use of resources it is deemed necessary to review the possibility of enhancing the limit of the amount of fine particles. Therefore, this study conducted experiments to analyze the characteristics of fine particles under 0.08mm and their influence on the properties of concrete. Experiments using silt and cohesive soil were also done for comparison. In the experiments on fine particles, the methylene blue value was more in the soil dust contained in silt and cohesive soil than in the stone powder contained in crushed fine aggregates. Also, the methylene blue value had a close correlation with packing density and liquid & plastic limit. In the experiments done with concrete, the quantity of high range water reducing agent demanded to obtain the same slump increased as the fine particle substitution rate heightened. However, in the experiment which used stone powder testing the compressive strength and tensile strength of concrete in the same water-cement ratio, there was little change in strength with less than 20% addition of fine particles among the fine aggregates, and no meaningful difference in the amount of drying shrinkage of concrete.

  • Leather waste discharged from Shinpyung Changrim Industrial Complex contained 46.3 percent of carbon, and weight loss of leather waste about 50 percent was observed at $500^{\circ}C$ by thermogravimetric analysis. Chemically activated carbon [LW4AC] was made at activation temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ during 30 minutes in electric furnace. Iodine value and decoloration of methylene blue was 968 mg/g and 158 mL/g, respectively. We found that pore volume was more developed according to the increase in the ratio of $K_2CO_3/LW$.

  • $TiO_2/CuS$ nanocomposites were fabricated by precipitation of nanosized CuS via sonochemical method on electrospun $TiO_2$ nanofibers, and their structure, chemical bonding states, optical properties, and photocatalytic activity were investigated. In the $TiO_2/CuS$ nanocomposite, the position of the conduction band for CuS was at a more negative than that of TiO; meanwhile, the position of the valence band for CuS was more positive than those for TiO, indicating a heterojunction structure belonging to type-II band alignment. Photocatalytic activity, measured by decomposition of methylene blue under visible-light irradiation (${\lambda}$ > 400 nm) for the $TiO_2/CuS$ nanocomposite, showed a value of 85.94% at 653 nm, which represented an improvement of 52% compared to that for single $TiO_2$ nanofiber (44.97% at 653 nm). Consequently, the photocatalyst with $TiO_2/CuS$ nanocomposite had excellent photocatalytic activity for methylene blue under visible-light irradiation, which could be explained by the formation of a heterojunction structure and improvement of the surface reaction by increase in surface area.

  • Adsorption is one of the best methods for wastewater purification. The fact that water quality is continuously decreasing requires the development of novel, effective and cost available adsorbents. Herein, a simple procedure for the preparation of a magnetic adsorbent from agricultural waste biomass and ferrofluid has been introduced. Specifically, ferrofluid mixed with wheat straw was directly pyrolyzed either by microwave irradiation (900 W, 30 min) or by conventional heating ($550^{\circ}C$, 90 min). Magnetic biochars were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy, textural analysis and tested as adsorbents of As(V) oxyanion and cationic methylene blue, respectively. Results showed that microwave pyrolysis produced char with high adsorption capacity of As(V) ($Q_m=25.6mg\;g^{-1}$ at pH 4), whereas conventional pyrolysis was not so effective. In comparison to conventional pyrolysis, one-step microwave pyrolysis produced a material with expressive microporosity, having a nine times higher value of specific surface area as well as total pore volume. We assumed that sorption properties are also caused by several iron-bearing composites identified by $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy ([super] paramagnetic $Fe_2O_3$, ${\alpha}-Fe$, non-stoichiometric $Fe_3C$, ${\gamma}-Fe_2O_3$, ${\gamma}-Fe$) transformed from nano-maghemite presented in the ferrofluid. Methylene blue was also more easily removed by magnetic biochar prepared by microwaves ($Q_m=144.9mg\;g^{-1}$ at pH 10.9) compared to using conventional techniques.

  • This research was to investigate the adsorption characteristics of charcoals of major Korean wood species (thinned trees) and wood-based materials. As carbonization time and temperature increased, methylene-blue adsorption (MBA) of charcoals of thinned trees and wood-based materials increased. Pinus koraiensis charcoal showed the highest MBA. MBA of softwoods was higher than that of hardwoods. There was a negative correlation between air-dried specific gravity before carbonization and MBA of carbonized thinned trees. The MBA of wood-based materials showed similar value, but wood-based materials in MBA was lower than thinned woods. Surface area and total pore volume of thinned trees and wood-based materials increased as carbonization temperature increased. The species showing highest MBA appeared to have the highest surface area at the carbonization temperature of 600℃ as well. There was a positive correlation between surface area, total pore volume and MBA of charcoals. The charcoal of wood-based materials generally exhibited micro pores.

  • The sapwood portion of fast-growing teak is mostly ignored due to its inferior quality. One of the possibilities for utilizing sapwood waste is to convert it into activated carbon that has good adsorption capabilities. The raw materials used in this research were sapwood of 14-year-old fast-growing teak sapwood (FTS) waste, which was taken from three trees from community forests in Wonosari, Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta Special Region. FTS waste was taken from the bottom of the tree up to a height of 1.3 m. The activation process is conducted with an activation temperature of 750℃, 850℃, and 950℃. The heating duration consists of three variations: 30 min, 60 min, and 90 min. The quality evaluation parameters of activated carbon include yield, moisture content, volatile matter content, ash content, fixed carbon content, adsorption capacity of benzene, adsorption capacity of methylene blue, and adsorption capacity of iodine. The results showed that the activated carbon produced had the following quality parameters: yield of 75.61%; moisture content of 1.27%; volatile matter content of 9.98%; ash content of 5.43%; fixed carbon content of 84.58%; benzene absorption capacity of 8.58%; methylene blue absorption capacity of 87.73 mg/g; and iodine adsorption capacity of 948.19 mg/g. It can be concluded that activated carbon from FTS waste has good iodine adsorption, which fulfilled the SNI 06-3730-1995 quality standard. Due to the iodine adsorption ability of FTS waste activated carbon, the conversion of FTS waste to activated carbon is categorized as a potential method to increase the value of this material.

  • In order to improve water quality of the water system contaminated with dyes, biochars prepared using discarded waste resources were applied in this study. Biochars with a large specific surface area were manufactured using street tree pruning products or waste wood, and were applied to remove an organic dye in synthetic water. Biochars were made by pyrolysis of typical street tree porch products (Platanas, Ginkgo, Aak) and waste wood under air-controlled conditions. Methylene blue (MB), which is widely used in phosphofibers, paper, leather, and cotton media, was selected in this study. The adsorption capacity of Platanas for MB was the highest and the qmax value obtained using the Langmuir model equation was 78.47 mg/g. In addition, the adsorption energy (E) (kJ/mol) of MB using the Dubinin-Radushkevich (D-R) model equation was 4.891 kJ/mol which was less than 8 kJ/mol (a criteria distinguishing physical adsorption from chemical adsorption). This result suggests a physical adsorption with weak interactions such as van der Waals force between the biochar and MB. In addition, the physical adsorption may resulted from that Platanas-based biohar has the largest specific surface area and pore volume. The ∆G value obtained through the adsorption experiment according to temperature variation was -3.67 to -7.68, which also suggests a physical adsorption. Considering these adsorption results, the adsorption of MB onto Platanas-based biochar seems to occur through physical adsorption. Overall, it was possible to suggest that adsorption capacity of the biochr prepared from this study was equal to or greater than that of commercial activated carbon reported in other studies.

  • In order to reuse the photocatalyst and enhance the photolysis efficiency, we have used atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge (APDBD) to clean and activate $TiO_2$ powder. The photocatalytic activity of the $TiO_2$ powder before and after APDBD treatment was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. The apparent reaction rate constant of photolysis of the first sample of reused $TiO_2$ cleaned by APDBD improved to a level up to 0.32h-1 higher than the 30 % value of the initial $TiO_2$ powder. As the number of photolysis reactions and APDBD cleanings increased, the apparent rate constants gradually decreased; however, the fourth photolysis reaction still showed a value that was greater than 10% of the initial value. In addition, APDBD treatment enhanced the process by which $TiO_2$ effectively adsorbed MB at every photolysis stage.
