  • In this paper we propose a microfluidic chip that measures the mechanical stiffness of cell membrane using impedance measurement. The microfluidic chip is composed of PDMS channel and a glass substrate with electrode. The proposed device uses patch-clamp technique to capture and deform a target cell and measures impedance of deformed cells. We demonstrated that the impedance increased after the membrane stretched and blocked the channel.

  • Piezoelectric underwater acoustic transducer is a kind of device for underwater detection working as not only an actuator but also a sensor. The technique that can predict acoustical characteristics of transducer is important for robust design of transducer in harsh underwater environment. This paper represents the dynamic analysis of piezoelectric acoustic transducers based on finite element method through USAP software. Two dimensional model of Tonpilz transducer and three dimensional model of Flextensional transducer are generated for the dynamic analysis and some results obtained by USAP are compared with those by ANSYS.

  • This paper presents a new concept of a 1-DOF elbow exoskeleton driven by a twisted strings-based actuator. A novel joint actuation mechanism is proposed and its kinematic model is presented along with its experimental evaluation, and guidelines on how to choose the strings suitable for such an exoskeleton are given. We also proposed and experimentally verified a human intention detection method which takes advantage of intrinsic compliance of the mechanism. The study showed that the developed twisted strings-driven elbow exoskeleton is light, compact and have a high payload-to-weight ratio, which suggests that the device can be effectively used in a variety of haptics, teleoperation, and rehabilitation applications.

  • A two dimensional Darrieus-type turbine has been proposed for the hydropower utilization of extra-low head less than 2m. In a practical use of Darrieus-type hydro-turbine, head and flow rate may be varied temporally and seasonally. Considering that the cost advantage is required for the low head hydro turbine system, the Darrieus turbine should be operated with high efficiency in the wider range of flow rate possibly by using an additional device with simpler mechanism. In the present paper, an adjustment of inlet nozzle section by lowering the inlet nozzle height is proposed to obtain the preferable inlet velocity in low flow rate conditions. Effects of resulting spanwise partial inlet flow are investigated. Finally, an effective modification of inlet nozzle height over flow rate variation is shown.

  • Chemical mechanical polishing(CMP) process has been widely used to planarize dielectric layers, which can be applied to the integrated circuits for deep sub-micron technology. The reverse moat etch process has been used for the shallow trench isolation(STI)-chemical mechanical polishing(CMP) process with conventional low selectivity slurries. Thus, the process became more complex, and the defects were seriously increased. In this paper, we studied the direct STI-CMP process without reverse moat etch step using high selectivity slurry(HSS). As our experimental results show, it was possible to achieve a global planarization without the complicated reverse moat process, the STI-CMP process could be dramatically simplified, and the defect level was reduced. Therefore the throughput, yield, and stability in the ULSI semiconductor device fabrication could be greatly improved.

  • The mechanical floating-mass which is analogous to an electrical floating- capacitance may not come across because a mass element in a mechanical network must be attracted to rho ground which is the reference point. In this study the mechanical floating-mass is fonstructed by employing two simple support levers, one link, one mass, and four frictionless hearings. It also shows that the mechanical device can be used to give various equivalent masses by altering the arm ratio of the levers.

  • This paper relates to develop the human-mobile interface system using saccadic eye movements as an aid to the disabled. EOG(ElectroOculoGraphy) method is used to measure the potentials of rapid eye movements because the method is not expensive and the device is simple. But because the resolution and accuracy of this signal are not good, the algorithm to remove the drifting, using ideal velocity shape, is applied to process the signals. The mobile robot (POSTUR-II) used in this system was developed in Robot & Bio-mechatronics laboratory in POSTECH and has the tele-operation system for the tele-communication with a main computer. Our Research is to help the physically disabled except his eye movements to operate some works with the mobile. Our Results about the system's possibility will be showed by some experimental tests giving the point information to the mobile by eye-gaze.

  • In order to raise productivity of the OLED and realization of the OLED TV, it is required to improve the design of the board size glass panel. The large-size glass substrate has some difficulties regarding its deflection during handling operation due to its small thickness (0.7t) which is not even enough to stand its mass itself. This paper is demonstrating a new solution of this difficult through clamping and bending end condition, which helps to minimize the deflection of the glass substrate.

  • In this study, a variable capacitive pressure sensor is fabricated for TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System). This study is for developing sensors which consecutively measure the tire pressure given as 30 psi from the industrial standard. For improving non-linearity of the prior capacitive pressure sensors, it is suggested that touch mode capacitive pressure sensor be applied. In addition, initial capacitance is designed as small as possible for the conformity to the wireless sensor. ANSYS, commercial FEA package, is used for designing and simulating the sensor. The device is progressed by MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) fabrication and packaged with PDMS. The result is obtained sensitivity, 1 pF/psi, through a pressure test. The simulation result is discrepant from experiment one. Wafer's uniformity is presumed as the main reason of discrepancy.

  • The best method of measuring wood diameter is a contact-type device: however, obtaining an accurate result can be problematic under certain circumstances. In this study, we used a laser beam and a CCD camera that did not require contact with wood. The wood is illuminated by the laser beam, and the CCD camera captures this illumination. The measurement results were determined by processing of the captured image sequences. This paper explains the use of image processing and laser systems for measurement of wood under circumstances in which physical contact is impossible.
