  • An incomplete factorization method for preconditioning symmetric positive definite matrices is introduced to solve normal equations. The normal equations are form to solve linear least squares problems. The procedure is based on a block incomplete Cholesky factorization and a multilevel recursive strategy with an approximate Schur complement matrix formed implicitly. A diagonal perturbation strategy is implemented to enhance factorization robustness. The factors obtained are used as a preconditioner for the conjugate gradient method. Numerical experiments are used to show the robustness and efficiency of this preconditioning technique, and to compare it with two other preconditioners.

  • The Nyquist robust stability margin is proposed as a measure of robust stability for systems with Affine TFM(Transfer Function Matrix) parametric uncertainty. The parametric uncertainty is modeled through a Affine TFM MIMO (Multi-Input Multi-Output) description with dead-time, and the unstructured uncertainty through a bounded perturbation of Affine polynomials. Gershgorin's theorem and concepts of diagonal dominance and GB(Gershgorin Bands) are extended to include model uncertainty. Multiloop PI/PID controllers can be tuned by using a modified version of the Ziegler-Nichols (ZN) relations. Consequently, this paper provides sufficient conditions for the robustness of Affine TFM MIMO uncertain systems with dead-time based on Rosenbrock's DNA. Simulation examples show the performance and efficiency of the proposed multiloop design method for Affine uncertain systems with dead-time.

  • The second order effective valence shell Hamiltonian ($H^v$), which is based on quasidegencrate many-body perturbation theory, is applied to determining the potential energy surfaces and the dipole moment functions of the various valence states of $NH_2$. The $H^v$ calculated values are found to be in good agreement with those of other ab initio calculations or experiments. It signifies the fact that the $H^v$ is a good ab initio method to describe the energies and properties of various valence states with a same chemical accuracy. Furthermore, it is shown that the lowest (second order for energy and the first order for property) order $H^v$ method is very accurate for small molecules like $NH_2$ and the matrix elements of Hv which are computed only once are all we need to accurately describe all the valence states simultaneously.

  • This paper demonstrates how ambient vibration measurements at a limited number of locations can be effectively utilized to estimate parameters of a finite element model of a large-scale structural system involving a large number of elements. System identification using ambient vibration measurements presents a challenge requiring the use of special identification techniques, which ran deal with very small magnitudes of ambient vibration contaminated by noise without the knowledge of input farces. In the present study, the modal parameters such as natural frequencies, damping ratios, and mode shapes of the structural system were estimated by means of appropriate system identification techniques including the random decrement method. Moreover, estimation of parameters such as the stiffness matrix of the finite element model from the system response measured by a limited number of sensors is another challenge. In this study, the system stiffness matrix was estimated by using the quadratic optimization involving the computed and measured modal strain energy of the system, with the aid of a sensitivity relationship between each element stiffness and the modal parameters established by the second order inverse modal perturbation theory. The finite element models thus identified represent the actual structural system very well, as their calculated dynamic characteristics satisfactorily matched the observed ones from the ambient vibration test performed on a large-scale structural system subjected primarily to ambient wind excitations. The dynamic models identified by this study will be used for design of an active mass damper system to be installed on this structure fer suppressing its wind vibration.

  • In this paper, we propose the use of stochastic finite element method, that is popularly employed in mechanical structure analysis, for more practical designing purpose of RF device. The proposed method is formulated based on the vector finite element method cooperated by pertubation analysis. The method utilizes sensitivity analysis algorithm with covariance matrix of the random variables that represent for uncertain physical quantities such as length or various electrical constants to compute the probabilities of the measure of performance of the structure. For this computation one need to know the variance and covariance of the random variables that might be determined by practical experiences. The presenting algorithm has been verified by analyzing several device with different be determined by practical experiences. The presenting algorithm has been verified by analysis several device with different measure of performanes. For the convenience of formulation, two dimensional analysis has been performed to apply it into waveguide with dielectric slab. In the problem the dielectric constant of the dielectric slab is considered as random variable. Another example is matched waveguide and cavity problem. In the problem, the dimension of them are assumed to be as random variables and the expectations and variances of quality factor have been computed.

  • A time domain finite element based method is employed to analyze wave radiation by multiple cylinders. The nonlinear free surface and body surface boundary conditions are satisfied based on the perturbation method up to the second order. The first- and second-order velocity potential problems at each time step are solved through a finite element method (FEM). The matrix equation of the FEM is solved through an iteration and the initial solution is obtained from the result at the previous time step. The three-dimensional (3D) mesh required is generated based on a two-dimensional (2D) hybrid mesh on a horizontal plane and its extension in the vertical direction. The hybrid mesh is generated by combining an unstructured grid away from cylinders and two structured grids near the cylinder and the artificial boundary, respectively. The fluid velocity on the free surface and the cylinder surface are calculated by using a differential method. Results for various configurations including two-cylinder and four-cylinder cases are provided to show the mutual influence due to cylinders on the first and second waves and forces.

  • System identification is the field of modeling dynamic systems from experimental data. As a modeling technique, we can mention finite element method (FEM). In addition, we are able to measure modal data as the experimental data. The system can be generally categorized into a gray box and black box. In the gray box, we know mathematical model of a system, but we don't know structural parameters exactly, so we need to estimate structural parameters. In the black box, we don't know a system completely, so we need to identify system from nothing. To date, various system identification methods have been developed. Among them, we introduce system realization theory which uses Hankel matrix and Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) that enable us to identify modal parameters from noisy measurement data. Although we obtain noise-free data, however, we are likely to face difficulties in identifying a structure with hidden modes. Hidden modes can be occurred when the input or output position comes to a nodal point. If we change a system using a mode decoupling controller, the hidden modes can be revealed. Because we know the perturbation quantities in a closed loop system with the controller, we can realize an original system by subtracting perturbation quantities from the closed loop system. In this paper, we propose a novel method to identify a structure with hidden modes using the mode decoupling controller and the associated example is given for illustration.

  • The problem of the structural identification becomes important, particularly with relation to the rapid increase of the number of the damaged or deteriorated structures, such as highway bridges, buildings, and industrial facilities. This paper summarizes the recent studies related to those problems by the present authors. The system identfication methods are generally classified as the time domain and the frequency domain methods. As time doamin methods, the sequential algorithms such as the extended Kalman filter and the sequential prediction error method are studied. Several techniques for improving the convergences are incorporated. As frequency domain methods, a new frequency response function estimator is introduced. For damage estimation of existing structures, the modal perturbation and the sensitivity matrix methods are studied. From the example analysis, it has been found that the combined utilization of the measurement data for the static response and the dynamic (modal) properties are very effictive for the damage estimation.
