  • In this study, Bumwoo KIM Chi Young's (1916.12.24~1995.4.22) papers, essays and books on mathematics education were collected and classified. Bumwoo KIM Chi Young was the most important person on the New Math Movement (Modernization for Mathematics Education), and in 1973, he led the Third Reformation of National School Mathematics Curriculum in Korea. Bumwoo emphasized mathematical structure in mathematics education, and he was a strong advocate of importance of set theory, creativity and the type of spiral learning.

  • Intuition has played an important role in process of invention of mathematics and given understanding of mathematical truth and the direction of solution. So, I review about intuition in history of mathematical philosophy and mathematics because we need systematic research about intuition for search of the methods for enhancement of intuition in mathematics education. According to the research of scholars who emphasize intuitive education, intuition is common feature which everybody hold and is not special feature which particular person hold. In addition, intuition is universal ability that can enhance by proper instruction. So, we have to emphasize the importance of the development of intuition and education which emphasize creative thought via intuition.

  • This study is aimed at the improvement of the teaching mathematics via the use of the mathematical history based on the learning stages which are understanding the problem, seeking after and solving the problem, application and development, and understanding the homeworks. General questions of this study are as follows according to the purpose of this study: First, we develop materials to use the teaching and learning stages which are understanding the problem, seeking after and solving the problem, application and development, and understanding the homeworks. Second, we search the effective methods for using materials which are developed in this study. Third, we apply materials to the teaching and learning mathematics. To answer the problems, 1 class students of the 4th grade in Gwangju participated in this study. Teaching and learning which uses mathematical history based on the learning stages is performed. The following results were obtained in this research. First, the teaching and learning using materials which is related to mathematical history is effective in improvement of students' mathematical ability. Second, the teaching and learning using material which is related to mathematics history is effective in improvement of students' mathematical attitude. In special, mathematical attitude of students who are involved in learning using materials which is related to mathematical history is more positive than that of general students using traditional teaching methods. Lastly, generalization of newly developed materials should be done to get more development and upgrade.

  • It is very important to study the history of text books for the present and the future study of text books. In this paper, we study the history of compilation of arithmetic text books on Gwangmu-Yunghee periods in Korea. Also we investigate some arithmetic text books on those periods and introduce some contents and some problems and solutions in those books.

  • Statistics was not recognized until the early 20th century as an independent science, and statistical education research came to an international milestone in the late 1940s. The purpose of this study is to investigate the historical development of statistics education research, focusing on the activities of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and the International Association for Statistical Education (IASE). Statistics education in Korea is considered with regard to the history of international research on statistics education in this study. It implies for the direction of statistical education research to domestic mathematics education researchers and statistical researchers related to statistical education research.

  • As teachers need to understand how to select and use technology in mathematics education, analysis on history, characteristics, and effects of various technology used in school mathematics will facilitate effective use of technology. This thesis aims to analyze through literary studies the history, characteristics, and effects of using spreadsheets Excel, dynamic geometry softwares GSP, Cabri and CAS, the most commonly used technology in teaching and learning mathematics in Korea. And we also study the current trends on using technology in mathematics education in Korea by investigating research trend, secondary mathematics curriculums past and present in Korea, mathematics textbooks, and classroom environments.

  • We briefly survey the history of Chinese mathematics which concerns the resolution of right triangles. And we analyse the problems Yucigugosulyodohae(劉氏勾股述要圖解) which is the mathematical book of Chosun Dynasty and contains the 224 problems about right triangles only. Among them, 210 problems are for resolution of right triangles. We also present the methods for generating the Pythagorean triples and constructing polynomial equations in Yucigugosulyodohae which are needed for resolving right triangles.

  • Tianyuanshu and Zengcheng Kaifangfa introduced in the Song-Yuan dynasties and their contribution to the theory of equations are one of the most important achievements in the history of Chinese mathematics. Furthermore, they became the most fundamental subject in the history of East Asian mathematics as well. The operations, or the mathematical structure of polynomials have been overlooked by traditional mathematics books. Investigation of GuIlJib (九一集) of Joseon mathematician Hong JeongHa reveals that Hong's approach to polynomials is highly structural. For the expansion of $\prod_{k=11}^{n}(x+a_k)$, Hong invented a new method which we name Hong JeongHa's synthetic expansion. Using this, he reveals that the processes in Zhengcheng Kaifangfa is not synthetic division but synthetic expansion.

  • In the nineteenth century was Augustus De Morgan, British mathematician, a great mathematics teacher. Although his name is well known to everybody who is interested in set theory, his major mathematical legacy would arise from his novel research in logic. In this article, we first investigate De Morgan's life briefly; we then consider his precious philosophy of mathematics education based on his students' remarks and his works. Finally, by considering his teaching style, we highlight some of the ingredients that go into making a great mathematics teacher.

  • The aims of the study were to analyze the San-Sul-Kwa textbook under the rule of Japanese Imperialism(1909~1945). It was analyzed that the contents of San-Sul-Kwa were selected for the purpose of national interests of Japanese as a ruling country through four times of amendment of education and many kinds of drill and practice in terms of number and operations were emphasized toward entire grades. However, some parts of textbook over the period seem to have had significant affects on mathematics education of Korea since the period.
