The statement, 'Taking more mathematics would result a better mathematics teacher.' sounds plausible. However, it is questionable that how much of taking university level of mathematics such as abstract algebra and real analysis would affect to teach elementary mathematics well. Would a mathematician be a better teacher for elementary students to teach mathematics than who has been prepared to teach elementary mathematics? This paper reports the effects of opportunities to learn tertiary level mathematics and school level mathematics on pre-service primary school teachers' mathematics pedagogical content knowledge. The study analyzed Teacher Education and Development Study in Mathematics 2008 (TEDS-M 2008) database using multiple regression. Prospective primary teachers who have been prepared as generalist were the focus of the study. The results support future elementary teachers might need to have opportunities to revisit school mathematics they are going to teach.
Since elementary school students are in the concrete operational stages, they have to learn mathematics using intuitive methods. So teachers have to have knowledge on the intuition. In this paper we investigated specialized content knowledge on the intuition which have 8 elementary school teachers in problem solving process. They were asked to solve 8 problems in the questionnaire which were provided by the www.mathlove.net. As a result we found that 7 elementary school teachers have a lack of understand on the intuition in problem solving process.
Problem Based learning(PBL) is a teaching and learning method to increase mathematical ability and help achieving mathematical concepts and principles through problem solving using the learner's mathematical prerequisite knowledge. In addition, the recent instructional situations or environments have focused on the learner's self construction of his learning and its process. In spite of such a quite attention, it is not easy to apply and execute PBL program actually in class. Especially, there are some difficulties in actually applying and practicing PBL in the areas of mathematics education in not only secondary school but also in college. Its reason is that in order to conduct PBL instruction constantly in real or experimental class there is no more concrete and detailed instructional content during the consistent and long period. However, to whom is related to mathematics education including instructors called scaffolders, investigation and recognition on the degree of the learner's acquisition of mathematical thinking skills and strategies is an very important work. By the reason, in this study, the instructional content was to be explored and developed to be conducted during 15 weeks in one semester, which was based on Problem Based Learning environment by the subject of the theories relevant to mathematics education in the college of education.
The purpose of this study is to develop and implement an alternative elementary mathematics curriculum to enhance creative problem solving ability. The curriculum consisting of three main elements was developed. The three elements are content knowledge, process knowledge and creative thinking skills. The curriculum contents and the units were developed by mathematics educators, elementary educators, psychologists, elementary school teachers and curriculum specialists for 3 years. In order to test the effectiveness of the developed curriculum, the 5 units based on a problem-based-learning (PBL) method were implemented in a 5th grade class as an experimental group during the second semester. For the comparison group the ordinary lesson based on the 6th national mathematics curriculum was implemented during the same period. Performance assessment was developed and used for the pre and post test. T-est was use to testify that the effect of the curriculum is statistically signigicant. The results of the test showed that the experimental group progressed significantly in the creative problem solving ability, but the comparison group did not.
In the present reflective study, the research findings of professional development in mathematics education are reviewed and significant ideas that emerged are addressed in ter ms of (1) building on collaborative effort; (2) focusing on content knowledge; (3) centering on students' learning and bringing forth teacher knowledge; (4) perception-based and conception-based perspective; 5) situating in the context of teaching and sustained over ti me. Then it is followed by suggesting what components a desirable professional develop ment program needs to include and a possible direction toward which future research on professional development in mathematics education heads.
For any thought and knowledge, its growth and development has close relation with the society where it is developed and grow. As Feuerbach says, the birth of spirit needs an existence of two human beings, i. e. the social background, as well as the birth of body does. But, at the educational viewpoint, the spread and the growth of such a thought or knowledge that influence favorably the development of a society must be also considered. We would discuss the goal and the function of mathematics education in relation with the prosperity of a technological civilization. But, the goal and the function are not unrelated with the spiritual culture which is basis of the technological civilization. Most societies of today can be called open democratic societies or societies which are at least standing such. The concept of rationality in such societies is a methodological principle which completes the democratic society. At the same time, it is asserted as an educational value concept which explains comprehensively the standpoint and the attitude of one who is educated in such a society. Especially, we can considered the cultivation of a mathematical thinking or a logical thinking in the goal of mathematics education as a concept which is included in such an educational value concept. The use of the concept of rationality depends on various viewpoints and criterions. We can analyze the concept of rationality at two aspects, one is the aspect of human behavior and the other is that of human belief or knowledge. Generally speaking, the rationality in human behavior means a problem solving power or a reasoning power as an instrument, i. e. the human economical cast of mind. But, the conceptual condition like this cannot include value concept. On the other hand, the rationality in human knowledge is related with the problem of rationality in human belief. For any statement which represents a certain sort of knowledge, its universal validity cannot be assured. The statements of value judgment which represent the philosophical knowledge cannot but relate to the argument on the rationality in human belief, because their finality do not easily turn out to be true or false. The positive statements in science also relate to the argument on the rationality in human belief, because there are no necessary relations between the proposition which states the all-pervasive rule and the proposition which is induced from the results of observation. Especially, the logical statement in logic or mathematics resolves itself into a question of the rationality in human belief after all, because all the logical proposition have their logical propriety in a certain deductive system which must start from some axioms, and the selection and construction of an axiomatic system cannot but depend on the belief of a man himself. Thus, we can conclude that a question of the rationality in knowledge or belief is a question of the rationality both in the content of belief or knowledge and in the process where one holds his own belief. And the rationality of both the content and the process is namely an deal form of a human ability and attitude in one's rational behavior. Considering the advancement of mathematical knowledge, we can say that mathematics is a good example which reflects such a human rationality, i. e. the human ability and attitude. By this property of mathematics itself, mathematics is deeply rooted as a good. subject which as needed in moulding the ability and attitude of a rational person who contributes to the development of the open democratic society he belongs to. But, it is needed to analyze the practicing and pursuing the rationality especially in mathematics education. Mathematics teacher must aim the rationality of process where the mathematical belief is maintained. In fact, there is no problem in the rationality of content as long the mathematics teacher does not draw mathematical conclusions without bases. But, in the mathematical activities he presents in his class, mathematics teacher must be able to show hem together with what even his own belief on the efficiency and propriety of mathematical activites can be altered and advanced by a new thinking or new experiences.
Recently there has been a high request for support for teachers' professional development and quality control to meet the demand of educational policy to introduce teacher evaluation, master teacher status, incentives for teacher competency, etc. It has been suggested that reeducation and support for professional development would be more effective to beginning teachers with a high developmental potential than to experienced teachers with routinized instruction. Since 2005, KICE-TLC has conducted research on the development of teacher supporting programs such as teaching consultation and pedagogical content knowledge(PCK) in school subjects. In line with the current education policy and previous research by KICE, this research has been conducted to meet the need for novice teacher induction by developing consulting program focused on PCK. The goal of this research was to (1) explore the in-depth meaning of PCK in light of teaching consultation, (2) conduct a preliminary study on how to develop teaching consulting programs for secondary beginning teachers, (3) develop teaching consulting programs focused on pedagogical content knowledge(PCK), and (4) suggest implications for educational policy regarding pre-service and in-service teachers' continuing professional development and support.

Because the role of the teacher is important for the education to actualize the goals of the curriculum, the interest about the teacher's knowledges has been addressed as an important research topic. Among them, the pedagogical content knowledge is the knowledge that can emphasize the professionalism of the teacher. In this study, I analyzed the elementary pre-service teachers' the problem solving strategies that they imagined the methods that elementary school students can think about fraction division. Pre-service teachers who participated in this study were completed all of the mathematics education courses in the pre-service teachers' education courses. The research was conducted using the four type-problems of fraction division. The results showed that elementary pre-service teachers responded in the order of equal sharing problem-measurement division-partitive division-context of determination of a unit rate problem. They presented significant responses not only with typical algorithms but also with pictures or expressions. On the basis of this research, we have to take an interest in the necessity of sharing and recognizing various methods of fraction division in pre-service teachers education.
