  • To understand natural or social phenomena, we need various information, knowledge, and thought skills. In this context, mathematics and sciences provide us with excellent tools for that purpose. This explains the reasons why there is always significant emphasis on mathematics and sciences in school education; some of the general goals in school education today are to illustrate physical phenomena with mathematical tools based on scientific consideration, to encourage students understand the mathematical concepts implied in the phenomena, and provide them with ability to apply what they learned to the real world problems. For the mentioned goals, we extract six fundamental principles for the integrated mathematics and science education (IMSE) from literature review and suggest a instructional design model. This model forms a fundamental of a case study we performed to which the IMSE was applied and tested to collect insights for design and practice. The case study was done for 10 students (2 female students, 8 male ones) at a coeducational high school in Seoul, the first semester 2009. Educational tools including graphic calculator(Voyage200) and motion detector (CBR) were utilized in the class. The analysis result for the class show that the students have successfully developed various mathematical concepts including the rate of change, the instantaneous rate of change, and derivatives based on the physical concepts like velocity, accelerate, etc. In the class, they described the physical phenomena with mathematical expressions and understood the motion of objects based on the idea of derivatives. From this result, we conclude that the IMSE builds integrated knowledge for the students in a positive way.

  • This thesis is a research to develop mathematical problems related to every day life, and to apply to mathematical extracurricular activity. The conclusions are as followings; (1) The materials of mathematical extracurricular activity totaling 34 hours' class time were developed and its theaching methods were thought out. (2) Through studying the mathematical problems related to everyday life, we could create a lively atmosphere in the classroom. (3) Through studying the mathematical problems related to everyday life, we could change the learning attitude of students affirmatively and make the students solve the problems for themselves. (4) We could try to build up to the management of mathematical extracurricular activity.

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the possibility of whether learning using a math learning platform can be used to expand students' conceptual structure and to consider how to use it. To this end, first-year middle school students studied using a math learning platform. Then, the concept map created was compared and analyzed with the concept map created before learning to examine the change in the concept structure. The results of analyzing the concept map are as follows. First, the change in the hierarchical structure of the concept appeared as the division of the upper concept was subdivided. However, it has also been changed to comprehensively integrate and simplify higher concepts. The term-centered concept structure has changed to content-centered superordinate and subordinate concepts. In the concept structure, subordinate concepts linked to one higher concept were expanded and differentiated. Second, changes in the integrated structure did not form a linkage structure. The expansion of the integrated structure of concepts through learning using the learning platform was influenced by the composition of the learning contents designed in the learning platform.

  • Most machines lose a lot of energy due to friction. Wear due to friction also reduces performance. Therefore, it is important to reduce friction on the surface to improve energy efficiency and decrease wear. Surface texturing refers to making patterns on the surface for reducing friction. There are many surface texturing methods, such as using lasers, abrasive jet machining, and so on. Recently, mechanical manufacturing methods, such as cutting and grinding, have been highlighted. Among them, the grinding method has the advantage of making patterns in large areas quickly. Therefore, it is appropriate for surface texturing on large machines. This paper is a study on the slope change of the surface texturing pattern using grinding. Therefore, we researched the slopes of the patterns corresponding to "spindle speed and feed rate" and "curvature of workpiece surface" using a mathematical model and experiment. As a result, we made a proper mathematical model concerning our research. Therefore, using the mathematical model in this paper, we could predict the slope change of the pattern according to grinding conditions.

  • One of the essential factors for successful college mathematics class is to provide a strong motivation for learning to students. In this respect, this paper attempted to find out how the letter-writing assignment can change students' learning attitude and enhance their motivation for further mathematical investigation. The process is to have all students write up letters containing a summary of the major points covered during the semester, and to find out how valuable is the letter-writing assignment. The major finding of this research is that the letter-writing assignment makes a notable contribution to the desirable change of students' learning attitude. From this finding, we suggest that the letter-writing assignment be adopted by more math classes and expect that such expansion of the letter-writing assignment would have a positive influence on the students' learning attitude.

  • In this paper, we consider a boundary value problem for a sixth order difference equation. We prove the monotone behavior of the eigenvalue of the problem as the coefficients in the difference equation change values and the existence of a positive solution for a class of problems.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the mathematical disposition and mathematical communication level of elementary school students in the process of applying mathematical journal writing activities. For this study, 21 third grade students in elementary school were observed when they participated in mathematical journal writing activities while studying number and operation area. According to the Mathematical disposition pre-test and post-test results, mathematical confidence, mathematical flexibility, mathematical will, and mathematical reflection increased and it was statistically proved. Expression and explanation level of the mathematical communication writing area also increased as the mathematical journal writing activity continued. Thus, mathematical journal writing activities can help to enhance the core competencies of the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum while make students 'to develop and transform mathematical expressions' and 'to express oneself'. Also, it provides implications of including active writing activities such as mathematical journal writing activities into mathematics classroom. Furthermore, the change in mathematical communication level according to mathematical disposition level was not statistically significant. Therefore, when providing active writing activities including mathematical journal writing activities into classroom, it is necessary to understand students' individual characteristics and to encourage communication to be active rather than giving feedback based on one's mathematical disposition level.
