  • The theory of representation, which has been an important topic of epistemology, has long history of study. But it has diverse meaning according to the fields of argument. In this paper the author set the meaning of mathematical representation as the interrelation of internal and external representations. With this concept, the following items were studied. 1. Survey on the concepts of mathematical representations. 2. Investigation of pedagogical significance of the mathematical representations, taking into account the characteristics of school mathematics. 3. Recommendation of principles for teaching representation to cope with the problems that are related with cause of disliking each domain of the secondary school mathematics. This study is expected to enable the development of teaching methods to help students strengthening their ability to comprehend mathematical sentences.

  • Flipped Learning is being suggested which is well known as a teaching method which lets students learn the contents they will learn in advance through the advance online video and have a discussion through the team interaction in the main class for them to solve the assignment through the cooperation in a self-initiated way. Therefore, this study was intended to confirm if the flipped learning class could improve the students' learning ability and raising the interest in math by complementing the problem on the lecture-type class by applying the flipped learning class to the college basic math subject. As a result, in the unit test result, the average score of the experimental group was more than 20 higher than one of the control group indicating that Flipped Learning had a great effect on improving the learning ability, and as for the introspection journal analysis, many subjects from the experimental group showed the positive attitude toward math they felt difficult unlike ones from control group indicating that it was effective in improving the interest level.

  • Problem solving in math education is of great importance. The interest on problem solving in math education is growing all over the world. Problem solving ability is important throughout the fourth-sixth national curriculum in Korea and this is also necessary in the seventh national curriculum. The writer has implemented a proper model for problem posing and this is also necessary in the seventh national curriculum that emphasizes self-leading for improvement in the classroom. This model has advantages to cultivate a good habit of students who tries to solve the problems with concrete strategies, to take part in the problem solving activity and to change their mathematical attitude.

  • In this information-oriented society of the 21st century, our education should combine the knowledge from the past and present in order to have students be ready to solve “the problems in the future”. But nowadays, our social situation makes much importance of the “cramming” education just for the College Scholastic Ability Test rather than the “whole man” education for making creative citizens of the future society. So does mathematics education. In a high school, mathematics education should be toward these aims: recognizing the value of math, applying mathematical principles to actual lives, promoting students' thinking ability. Also, it should focus on teaching higher level of mathematical knowledge which includes more logical and abstract idea so that students can prepare for the global society of the future. This study is about development and utilization of the teaching materials for mathematics class which usually deviates from the routine right after the Scholastic Ability Test finished. These materials are the result of a complete survey of the 3rd graders and their teachers and designed to use for 30 periods of class from after-the-test-finished to graduation. The materials consist of a history of mathematics, puzzles, magic number squares, and so on. Remarkably different from the current textbooks which deal with sets, equations, functions, these materials proved to be useful for their variety and attraction. Consequently, the materials are considered to keep the 3rd graders from forgetting mathematics even after the Scholastic Ability Test, and to help them recognize that mathematics is a kind of basic and cultural study and a tool of daily lives.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of classes using AlgeoMath on fifth grade elementary students' mathematical problem-solving skills and mathematical attitudes. For this purpose, the 'cuboid' section of the 5th grade elementary textbook based on AlgeoMath was reorganized. A total of 8 experimental classes were conducted using this teaching and learning material. And the quantitative data collected before and after the experimental lesson were statistically analyzed. In addition, by presenting instances of experimental lessons using AlgeoMath, we investigated the effectiveness and reality of classes using engineering in terms of mathematical problem-solving ability and attitude. The results of this study are as follows. First, in the mathematical problem-solving ability test, there was a significant difference between the experimental group and the comparison group at the significance level. In other words, lessons using AlgeoMath were found to be effective in increasing mathematical problem-solving skills. Second, in the mathematical attitude test, there was no significant difference between the experimental group and the comparison group at the significance level. However, the average score of the experimental group was found to be higher than that of the comparison group for all sub-elements of mathematical attitude.

  • This study was conducted with the aim to develop and improve the assessment literacy of teachers which enables it to develop and utilize the assessment items using a wide range of contexts on the basis of an understanding of math contents and mathematical process specified in the math curriculum and to analyze the results in an effective way. To analyze the changes in the development and improvement of the assessment literacy of preservice math teachers, the author of this study, using PISA items and assessment framework, analyzed the changes through the 1st and 2nd development of assessment items. The results showed the assessment literacy of preservice math teachers and their ability have been improved, implying that there is the necessity to develop a wide range of programs to improve the assessment literacy of preservice math teachers and provide such programs on a regular basis, which will facilitate effective math teaching and learning.

  • In modern mathematic education, the development of mathematical ability based on the understanding of mathematical concepts has been emphasized in curriculum and teaching methodology. Also, in schools, most math teachers stress the importance of mathematical concepts in doing math well. Thus, in this paper, we outlined the development of mathematical concepts through the literature survey. And then, based on the Sfard's definition of mathematical concepts, which classifies math concepts into the operational approach and structural approach, we analyzed the math concepts of exponential function and logarithmic function units in three highschool math textbooks. As the result, we found that the textbook authors used different approach for the same concepts, and, at the same time, they used both approaches to help develop the students' math concepts.

  • Positive attitude toward mathematics is gaining bigger recognition as an important contributing factor to mathematical ability. As a strategy for strengthening affective domain and betterment of mathematics teaching and loaming, classifying students by their causes for liking or disliking mathematics can be an effective way In this study the author tried to devise methods to classify students by their types of math disliking and investigate correlations between mathematical achievements and these math-disliking types from a sample group of 8th graders. To identify the types of reasons why 8th graders dislike mathematics, a questionnaire with 30 items was made firstly. Then by applying the 'Factor analysis' of SPSS, the 30 items were divided into five partitions. Through abstraction of each partition, five math-disliking types, 'Competences', 'Basics', 'Confidences', 'Usefulness', and 'Teachers' were defined. They are expected to help teachers for describing each student's tendency of math-disliking. Further, correlation coefficients between mathematical achievements and each of the five math-disliking type were investigated against 4 groups which were made from sample group by the discrimination of gender and two levels (high and low) of mathematical achievements in cognitive area. As results, the following facts were found. (i) The trends of correlations between cognitive achievement and the five math disliking types were different across the 4 groups at statistically meaningful degrees. (ii) Most of the male students who had math-disliking types were proved to be in the low achievement level. But for the female students, only 50% of students who had math-disliking types were in the low achievement level. (iii) Compared to male students, higher portion of female students had math-disliking types despite their high achievement in cognitive area.

  • Recently, worldwide attention has been placed on being able to develop a person with interdisciplinary abilities. Specifically, there has been an emphasis on the integration of the previous STEM education and the arts, as well as the role of IT in technology and engineering education. Therefore, for this study, our goal is to help pave the way for the increased use of the teaching-learning methods of the IT-based STEAM education in developing people with interdisciplinary abilities. Firstly, we searched through domestic and foreign papers for example related to the recent trend towards the STEAM and integrative IT education models. In this study, we also presented a realistic teaching model based on STEAM education, applied mainly in the U.S., and on the teaching-learning methods of science and technology. The method we suggested is rated by expert assessments as a highly effective teaching-learning method for science and math. The use of educational IT technology in the STEAM education method is also analyzed with positive results.
