  • $LiFePO_4$ has been received attention as a potential cathode material for the lithium secondary batteries. In our study, $LiFePO_4$ cathode active materials were synthesized by a solid-state reaction. It was modified by coating $TiO_2$ and carbon in order to enhance cyclic performance and electronic conductivity. $TiO_2$ and carbon coatings on $LiFePO_4$ materials enhanced the electronic conductivity and its charge/discharge capacity. For lithium polymer battery applications, $LiFePO_4$/solid polymer electrolyte (SPE)/Li and $LiFePO_{4}-TiO_{2}/SPE/Li$ cells were characterized by a cyclic voltammetry and charge/discharge cycling. The electrode with $LiFePO_{4}-carbon-TiO_{2}$ in PVDF-PC-EC-$LiClO_{4}$ electrolyte showed promising capacity of above 100 mAh/g at 1C rate.

  • Lithium-ion batteries with high energy density, long cycle life and other advantages, have been widely used to energy storage systems(ESS). But as ESS fires frequently occur, the safety concern has become the main obstacle that hinders the large-scale applications of lithium-ion batteries. Especially, thermal runaway is the key scientific problem in battery safety research. Therefore, in this study, we performed a numerical analysis on the thermal runaway phenomenon of NCM111, NCM523 and NCM622 batteries using a two-dimensional analysis model. The results show that the two-dimensional simulation results are generally matched with three-dimensional simulation. Also, In the case of NCM111 with a low Ni content in the temperature range used in this study, thermal runaway phenomenon does occurred very slowly, but as the Ni content is increased, the thermal runaway phenomenon occurs rapidly and the thermal stability tends to be decreased. And, in NCM523 and NCM622 batteries, chain reactions occur almost simultaneously, but in the case of NCM111 battery, it is found that after the SEI(Solid Electrolyte Interface) layer decomposition reaction, the cathode-electrolyte reaction is appeared sequentially. After that, the anodic decomposition reaction is increased and leads to the thermal runaway reaction.

  • To improve electronic conductivity of cathodic active materials of lithium ion battery, carbonaceous materials is usually added. New mixing method of abrasive milling has been investigated in mixing of graphite and $LiCoO_2$ powders. It would be expected that uniform mixing of graphite reduces capacity fading of cathode of lithium battery. Abrasion milled $LiCoO_2$ composite showed the best electrochemical performance as a cathode material with 1 wt% of graphite content, 300 rpm of milling speed, and 10 min of milling time. The improvement of the electrochemical performances such as cycleability and charge/discharge capacity retention would be mainly attributed to increase of the electronic conductivity and/or prevention of the active materials by uniform dispersion and coating of graphite on $LiCoO_2$.

  • The electrochemical properties of $LiFePO_4$ as a cathode for Li-ion batteries were improved by incorporating conductive carbon into the $LiFePO_4$. X-ray diffraction analysis and SEM observations revealed that the carbon-coated $LiFePO_4$ consisted of fine single crystalline particles, which were smaller than the bare $LiFePO_4$. The electrochemical performance of the carbon-coated $LiFePO_4$ was tested under various conditions. The carbon-coated $LiFePO_4$ showed much better performance in terms of the discharge capacity and cycling stability than the bare $LiFePO_4$. The improved electrochemical performances were found to be attributed to the reduced particle size and enhanced electrical conductivity of the $LiFePO_4$ by the carbon.

  • The importance of rechargeable lithium cells has been emphasized. So a large variety of materials has been discovered and evaluated for use as reversible cathodes and electroyltes. This paper examines the charge/discharge properties and the charge/discharge cycling life of Li$_2$O-P$_2$O-V$_2$O$_{5}$Li cells. In audition, DTA tests were carried out on Li$_2$O-P$_2$O-V$_2$O$_{5}$ glass. As a result the best performance was achieved when 0.3Li$_2$O-0.1P$_2$O$_{5}$-0.6V$_2$O$_{5}$Li cells was mixed with SP270. that is discharge capacity of 240mAh/g have been achieved. In addition this battery exhibited good cycling performance. Considering these results we expected utilization of the Li$_2$O-P$_2$O-V$_2$O$_{5}$ glass as a cathode material in a secondary battery.y battery.

  • The amorphous vanadium oxide as a cathode material is very preferable for fabricating high performance micro-battery. The amorphous vanadium oxide cathode is preferred over the crystalline form because three times more lithium ions can be inserted into the amorphous cathode, thus making a battery that has a higher capacity. The electrochemical properties of sputtered films are strongly dependent on the oxygen partial pressure in the sputtering gas. The effect of different oxygen partial pressure on the electrochemical properties of vanadium oxide thin films formed by r.f. reactive sputtering deposition were investigated. The stoichiometry of the as-deposited films were investigated by Auger electro spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy measurements were carried out to investigate structural properties and surface morphology, respectively. For high oxygen partial pressure(>30% ), the films were polycrystalline V$_2$O$_{5}$ while an amorphous vanadium oxide was obtained at the lower oxygen partial pressure(< 15%). Half-cell tests were conducted to investigate the electrochemical properties of the vanadium oxide film cathode. The cell capacity was about 60 $\mu$ Ah/$\textrm{cm}^2$ m after 200 cycle when oxygen partial pressure was 20%. These results suggested that the capacity of the thin film battery based on vanadium oxide cathode was strongly depends on crystallinity.y.

  • Nickel-rich lithium nickel-cobalt-manganese oxides (NCM) are viewed as promising cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs); however, their poor cycling performance at high temperature is a critical hurdle preventing expansion of their applications. We propose the use of a functional electrolyte additive, triphenyl phosphate (TPPa), which can form an effective cathode-electrolyte interphase (CEI) layer on the surface of Ni-rich NCM cathode material by electrochemical reactions. Linear sweep voltammetry confirms that the TPPa additive is electrochemically oxidized at around 4.83 V (vs. Li/Li+) and it participates in the formation of a CEI layer on the surface of NCM811 cathode material. During high temperature cycling, TPPa greatly improves the cycling performance of NCM811 cathode material, as a cell cycled with TPPa-containing electrolyte exhibits a retention (133.7 mA h g-1) of 63.5%, while a cell cycled with standard electrolyte shows poor cycling retention (51.3%, 108.3 mA h g-1). Further systematic analyses on recovered NCM811 cathodes demonstrate the effectiveness of the TPPa-based CEI layer in the cell, as electrolyte decomposition is suppressed in the cell cycled with TPPa-containing electrolyte. This confirms that TPPa is effective at increasing the surface stability of NCM811 cathode material because the TPPa-initiated POx-based CEI layer prevents electrolyte decomposition in the cell even at high temperatures.
