Objectives: We took breast milk samples and analyzed them using HPLC and LC/MS/MS, to evaluate the effects of taking Saenghwa-tang during breastfeeding on breast milk. Methods: The study participants were 20 lactating women who admitted in Korean medical postpartum care center. Breast milks were collected from paticipants who have been administrated Saenghwa-tang for more than 3 days. We used HPLC and LC/MS/MS for the determinations of amygdalin, liquiritins, 6-gingerol, decursin and decursinol angelate in Saenghwa-tang. Results: 1. Participants' $Mean{\pm}S.D$ (standard deviation) of age is $31.05{\pm}1.96$, and 15 participants had normal delivery and 5 participants had cesarean delivery. 12 participants were primipara and 8 participants were multipara. $Mean{\pm}S.D$ of lactating date is $9.4{\pm}0.94$. 2. Using HPLC, we learned LOQ level peak that matches the peak retention time of standard components of Saenghwa-tang was not detected from 20 breast milk samples. 3. Using LC/MS/MS, decursin of Angelicae Gigantis Radix was detected from HMSP 02, HMSP 04, HMSP 06, HMSP 11, and the each concentrations are 16, 2, 64, 11 ppb. Liquiritin of Glycyrrhizae Radix was not detected from HMSP 13~HMSP 18. Conclusions: Data obtained by this approach shows that this method is reliable and suitable for determining the safety of taking Saenghwa-tang during breastfeeding.
Breast milk production and factors related to milk production were examined by test-weighting method in the part of Kangwon Province longitudinally from 0.5 to 5 months of postpartum. Milk production of total mothers averaged 639, 789, 871, 843, 848 and 851g/day at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 months of postpartum respectively. Mean Milk production of multiparae appeared significantly higher than those of primiparac. The number of feed per day showed decreasing trend from 9.6 to 8.4 during the lactation. Mature milk production had a correlation with transitional milk production and no correlation with infants weight at birth, gestational period and weight gain during pregnancy of mothers. The energy, protein and lipid consumption of total mothers had a positive correlation with breast milk production.
The longitudinal change of vitamin E($\alpha$-Tocopherol) content and secretion in transitional milk of 32 Korean lactating women and vitamin E intake of infants was studied 7, 10 and 15 days postpartum, Vitamin E content of the milk decreased at 7, 10 and 15 days postpartum with the respective amount of 784, 633 and 539$\mu\textrm{g}$/100ml. The average vitaimin E secretion in the milk of mothers appeared 350$\mu\textrm{g}$/days. The average vitamin E intake in the milk was 3033 and 2424$\mu\textrm{g}$/day in boys and girls respectively and was 174.7% for infants of the recommended lower limit for vitamin E in infant formular of 0.5mg/100㎉. Vitamin E intake per body weight of infants in the milk were 929.731 and 676$\mu\textrm{g}$/kg/day respectively.
The longitudinal changes on contents of calcium, phosphorous and magnesium of breast milk of 23 Korean lacto-ovo-vegetarians(primiparae=11, multiparae=12) at 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 months postpartum have been studied. The mean ash content of breast milk per 100ml was 0.21g in total lactating women(n=23), and it decreased significantly during lactation(p<0.05). The mean calcium, phosphorous and magnesium contents of breast milk per 100ml were 26.83mg, 14.01mg and 2.72mg, respectively. Body calcium and phosphorous contents decreased significantly during lactation(p<0.05), but magnesium content tended to increase during lactation. There were no significant differences in ash, calcium, phosphorous and magnesium contents between primiparae and multiparae. The ratio of calcium to phosphorus was about 1.95:1 in breast milk and 0.62 : 1 in maternal dietary intake. In calcium and phosphorous, no correlation was found between maternal dietary intake and the concentration in breast milk. This study suggests that the contents of calcium, phosphorous and magnesium in lacto-ovo-vegetarian breast milk are not different from the concentrations of those in non-vegetarian.
The longitudinal changes in the transitional milk yields of Korean lactating women(14 primiparae, 11 multiparae) have been studied by test-weighing method in the part of Kangwon Province form 7 day to 15 days postpartum. The transitional milk yields at 7, 10, 15 days postpartum were 531$\pm$148,598$\pm$156 and 639$\pm$169g, respectively. The mean milk yield was 589$\pm$162g from 7 to 15 days postpartum. The transitional milk yields between primiparae and multiparae appeared not significantly different but significantly different between mothers of boys and girl(p<0.05). The distribution of individual transitional milk yields were found 550-649g(28.0%), 450-549g(24.0%), 650-749g(13.3%) and 750-849g(13.3%). The transitional milk yields were not affected by mother's age, weight gain during pregnancy, gestational period and infant's weight at birth but affected by maternal height(p<0.05). Maternal weight reduction during the lactation had no correlation with the transitional milk yeilds.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the kinds and way of using traditional foods for korean traditional days, and to identify prohibitive foods for pregnant and lactating women, and sick people taking into account the cultural aspects and the belief of korean housewives in Yanbian. The data were collected from August to December of 1995 in Yanbian area of China. The questionaire was designed to find traditional and prohibitive foods for them. The results provide some implications regarding the impact of cultures in understanding the perceptions to traditional foods as well as prohibitive foods. The perception on the development of traditional fast food and traditional food and menu is higher in Yanbian area than in korea but the frequency to use traditional fast food is similar in two areas.
The longitudinal changes on human milk intake of exclusively breast-fed infants(boys=15, girls=12) from 0.5 to 6 months after parturition have been studied by test-weighing method in Cheongju and Anseong area. Infant milk intake per day tended to increase during lactation. The mean intake at 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 months were 532, 695, 734, 756, 785, 767, and 710g, respectively. The average intakes were 752 and 660g for boys and girls, respectively. The overall mean intake was 711g/day. The milk intake between boys and girls at 1, 2, 4 months, and mean value was significantly different(p<0.05). Infant milk intake had a significant positive correlation with human milk volume of lactating women, but no correlation with maternal age, weight before delivery, height, and birth weight.
The purpose of this study was to describe perimenstrual symptom severity levels and perimenstrual distress patterns of women. The study performed the discriminant analysis in which included seven factors : age, pariety, social support, menstrual socialization(mother's symptom, sister's symptom, and menstrual effect), attitude of sex role and depression. The subjects were 283 women that they were not pregnant or lactating, had at least one period in past three months, would understand the purpose of study and willingly accepted the participation. The data analysis was done by pc-SAS program after data collection from Nov. 20, 1997 to Dec. 18, 1997. The descriptive analysis was done to explore general characteristics of the subjects and the stepwise discriminant analysis was done to verify factors in relation to perimenstrual symptom severity levels(severe vs mild menstrual symptom group) and perimenstrual distress patterns(spasmodic vs congestive menstrual symptom group). The instruments were selected for this study from Interpersonal Support Evaluation List(ISEL) by Cohen and Hoberman(1983), Center for Epidemic Studies Depression(CES-D) by Radloff(1977), and Sex Role Attitude Scale by Yunok Suh(1995), Mother's symptom and sister's symptom measurements by Woods, Mitchell & Lentz(1995), and menstrual effect by Brooks-Gun & Ruble(1980). The major findings of this study are as follows : 1. Of the 283 women, 93 women(32.9%) were assessed to severe perimenstrual symptom group and 190 women(67.1%) were assessed to mild perimenstrual symptom group. Results from the stepwise discriminant analysis showed three factors, such as depression, menstrual effect, and age, significantly related to perimenstrual symptom severity and they explained 20% of the total variance. The linear discriminant equation included three factors related to perimenstrual symptom groups was showed(Z=1.445 depression+0.174 menstrual effect-0.054 age). The cutting score(Z) was 2.809. We classified the severe perimenstrual symptom group by more than the cutting score 2.809 and the mild perimenstrual symptom by less or equal than the cutting score 2.809. The correctedness of posterior probability from discriminant equation was 72% as two perimenstrual symptom group classifications. 2. Of the 264 women, 139 women(52.7%) were assessed to spasmodic perimenstrual distress group and women(47.3%) were assessed to congestive perimenstrual distress group. Results from the stepwise discriminant analysis showed two factors, such as depression, age, significantly related to perimenstrual distress groups and they explained 8% of the total variance. The linear discriminant equation included two factors related to perimenstrual distress group was showed(Z=-0.084 age-0.776 depression). The cutting score(Z) was -3.759. We classified the spasmodic perimenstrual distress group by more than cutting score -3.759 and the congestive perimenstrual distress group by less or equal than cutting score -3.759. The correctedness of posterior probability from discriminant equation was 65% as two perimenstrual distress group classifications.
