The Effect of the Use of Smart Devices by the Elderly on Life Satisfaction : Focusing on the Mediating Effects of Self-esteem (노인의 스마트기기 활용이 삶의 만족도에 미치는 영향 : 자아존중감의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • This study is to verify the mediating effect of self-esteem on the effect of the elderly's smart device use on life satisfaction. To this end, secondary data analysis was conducted using the Korea Media Panel Survey conducted by the Information and Communication Policy Institute in 2021. The responses of 3,211 people in their 60s or older who are the subjects of this study were utilized. For analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple regression analysis were performed using SPSS, and the Sobel test was conducted to verify mediating effects. As a result, smart device utilization averaged 2.13 points out of 5, indicating that the actual utilization level was less than half. The use of smart devices, an independent variable, had a positive effect on the dependent variable, life satisfaction. Self-esteem, which is a parameter, has been verified as a partial mediating effect in that smart device use affects life satisfaction. Based on the results of this study, various policy and practical measures were proposed to increase the smart device utilization rate of the elderly in Korea, improve self-esteem and life satisfaction, so that they can spend a happy old age.

A Study on Movie Consumption and Concentration Trends in Theaters and Online (극장과 온라인의 영화 소비와 소비집중도 추세에 관한 연구)

  • In the theater-based movie industry, it is known that the diversity of movie consumption is hindered due to concentrated consumption. This study extends the existing discussions on the concentration of movie consumption in theaters to the concentration of online movie consumption. In addition, the study analyzes the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on movie consumption and the concentration thereof. For analysis, panel data for the period from 2012 through 2021 were collected by utilizing the box office data of the Korean Film Council. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the concentration of consumption by movie, country, and genre was higher in theaters than online. Further, the concentration of movie consumption has increased both in theaters and online until the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic. During the Covid-19 pandemic period, the size of consumption has decreased both in theaters and online, while the concentration of consumption by movie online has increased. The result of this study implies a need for policy-level efforts to convert the trend of consumption concentration for long-term development of the movie industry with secured diversity of movie consumption, and for this, the study suggests that the use of online media would be useful.

Market Performance and Strategy of Program Providers (방송채널사용사업자의 시장 성과와 전략)

  • This study examines the performance of program providers(PP) considering various factors. This study employs the panel regression models with the dataset from 2014 to 2019. This study analyzes how various market structural factors and behavioral factors have impact on the performance. The results show that the high proportion of retransmission fees to broadcasting revenue is negatively associated with total media revenue and operating income while advertising revenue is positively associated with these factors. The results imply PPs that have heavily depended on the fees have not showed a superior performance. Current PP markets are evaluated to have low average revenue per users and thus the size of retransmission fees cannot be enlarged. Under such market conditions, PPs focusing on raising advertising revenue show better performance. This study also suggests that PPs that own diverse channel assets have improved their performances.

An Analysis of the Impact of Digital Content Usage on Smart TV Usage (디지털 콘텐츠 이용이 스마트TV 이용에 미치는 영향 연구)

  • As digital content services, especially OTT(over-the-top) video services, diffuse rapidly, so do smartTVs. Based on the indirect network effect theory and the complementarity theory, this study explores the relationship between digital content services and smartTV. Using the Media panel dataset, this study analyzes how the usage of digital content service (OTT usage, OTT usage volume, the usage of various OTT service types, and online game/music/education/news service) affects smartTV usage. This study shows that OTT usage and its usage volume is positively associated with smartTV usage, and that the usage of various OTT service types is positively associated with smartTV usage compared with non-OTT users. As for online content services, the usage of online education service is positively associated with smartTV usage while the usage of online news service is associated negatively. These results support the indirect network effect theory and the complementarity theory.

Moderating Effect of Internet Activity on Privacy Attitude and Expectations of the fourth Industrial Revolution

  • In this study, we explored consumers' the privacy attitudes and Internet activities on the expectations of the fourth industrial revolution. Furthermore, we examined the moderating effect of Internet activities between the privacy attitudes and the expectations of the fourth industrial revolution. Research data are 2018 Korea media panel survey provided by Korea Information Society Development Institute. As a result, concerns about privacy were negative on the expectations of the fourth industrial revolution. Consumer's internet activities had a positive effect on the expectations of the fourth industrial revolution. Concerns about privacy have a negative effect on the expectations of the fourth industrial revolution, but active internet activities have mitigated it or turned it into a positive. This study will contribute as basic data for more active responses in the economic structure facing the 4th industrial revolution.

Moderating Effect of Security Ability on the Relation between Privacy Concern and Internet Activities

  • This study explored the moderating effects of security ability on the influence of privacy concerns on internet activity using Korea media panel survey data. To this end, we applied between-subjects factorial design between 2 (privacy concern high / low) × 2 (security ability high / low) groups and compared five types of internet activity among four groups by variance analysis. As a result, privacy concerns have a main effect on internet activity, and security ability have a moderating role in this relationship. Despite the privacy concerns, people do their internet activities in order to enjoy the benefit from the internet. This study have academic implication in that it focus on the issue of privacy paradox in terms of the type of internet activity. In addition, practical implications are that, in order to activate online activities of individuals in an internet-connected society, efforts for enhancing their security abilities are necessary.

A Study on the Characteristics of Panels and the Correlations between Partisanships of Political Parties and Talks of Panels in Public Affair Talk Programs of General Programming Channels (종합편성채널 시사대담 프로그램의 출연 패널 특성 및 패널 발언과 정당 입장간의 상관성에 관한 연구)

  • The political influences of general programming channels have grown with the help of the current affairs talk programs for years but also these channels have been criticized as politically biased media. This study investigates the characteristics of the panels who had appeared for 6 months since July of 2017 and examines the relationship between the panels' talk and the position of political parties. The results show that jobs of the casting panels were introduced as neutral ones which are not related to politics. However, after reclassifying them in terms of their political careers, most panels were more likely to be involved in political parties. In addition, they tend to support the positions of the ruling or opposition parties. The more the association with the political party, the stronger the panel's comments. The partisanship of the panels should be clearly presented in the broadcasting programs. It is necessary to distinguish genres of current affair programs by consistent standards to ensure consistency of deliberation. Lastly self-regulation of program producers should be more strengthened.

The effects of poverty on school maladjustment and academic achievement mediated by parental monitoring and types of internet use (빈곤은 인터넷 활용에도 영향을 미치는가?: 빈곤이 부모의 지도감독과 청소년의 인터넷 활용유형을 매개로 학교부적응과 학업성취에 미치는 영향)

  • One of the most popular keywords in 21th century is "Information Society". Information Society improves the overall quality of human life, but increases the negative aspects such as internet addiction and digital divide. The purpose of this study is to understand the vicious cycle between socio-economic disparities and digital divide. This study analyzed the effects of poverty on school maladjustment and academic achievement and mediation effects by using parental monitoring and internet use types as mediators. Data were obtained from the Korea Youth Panel Survey(KYPS). Structural equation modeling was employed for statistical analyses. The result showed that poverty reduced parental monitoring and information-oriented type of internet use. Youth who used less information-oriented type showed more school maladjustment and less academic achievement. However, the relationship between poverty and entertainment-oriented type was non-significant. Thus, parental monitoring and the internet use types were one of the main pathways which can affect school maladjustment and academic achievement among youth in poverty. There was the possible vicious cycle between poverty and digital divide. Based on this study, we strongly suggest improvement of the media competence to solve the problem of digital divide among youth in poverty.

In vitro and In vivo Activities Studies of Chois Mastic Using Self-microemulsifying Drug Delivery System (SMEDDS) against Helicobactor pylori (자가미세유화시스템을 이용한 매스틱의 헬리코박터파일로리 대한 In vitro 및 In vivo 활성 연구)

  • Mastic is a bleed resin formed in pistacia lentiscus tree extract form the anacatdiaceae family. Mastic is used as a food ingredient in the Mediteraanean resin, and has been used by local inhabitants as a traditional medicine for relief of upper abdominal discomfort, dyspepsiaand peptic ulcer. Clinically, mastic has been effective in the treatment of benign gastric and duodenal, ulcers, giving symptomatic relief and endoscopically proven healing. In this study, to enhance activiteies of poorly water soluble Mastic with oils, surfactants and cosurfactants and then the mixure was microemulsified in aqueous media under condition of gentle agitation and digestive motility that would be encountered in the gastrointestinal tract. Formulation development and screening were based on phase diagrams and characteristics of resultant microemulsion. For optimum mastic formulation, microemulsions with various ratio (w/w%) of mastics, oils, surfactants and cosurfactants were prepared and their solubility was evaluated by monitoring particles size in their buffer through visual asessment and electrophoretic light scattering spectrophotomerter (ELS). In vitro activity of self microemulsified mastic (SME mastic) was determined by minimum ingibition concentration (MIC) test against a panel of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) clinical strains. Additionally, in vivo activity of SME masitc was investigated us mouse infected by CH275 of H. pylori. The mean diameter of SME mastic was less then 100 nm in water and SME mastic was showed similar antiboisis effect compared to tometronidazole, clarithromycin and omeproazole. Consequently, SME mastic would be effective system to exterminate H. pylori. If mastic were dose with combined treatment, mastic might augur well for effect of H. pylori eradication as good remedy.

Effects of Online Engagement on Uses of Digital Paid Contents (온라인 관여가 디지털 유료 콘텐츠 이용에 미치는 영향)

  • This study aims to empirically investigate how users' online engagement behaviors predict their uses of paid contents. To this end, the data from the 2016 Korean Media Panel Survey, which has been conducted annually by the Korea Information Society Development Institute(KISDI), were analyzed. Major findings(N=8.313) were as follows. First, the active type of online engagement(e.g., posting, commenting), which contributes to direct creation of online contents, was the most powerful predictor to explain the DV. On the other hand, relatively passive actions of user engagement(e.g., sharing, endorsing, voting) turned out to have no significant effects on the uses of paid contents, just as personality traits and online privacy concerns did. Based on these results, it is recommended that online contents or platform service providers should try to establish clearly-targeted marketing strategies, after thoroughly collecting and analyzing the data of users' various online behaviors.
