The deformational response of plastic board drains installed to accelerate consolidation of soft soils, is examined as a problem of downdrag. The drain is modelled as a beam-column in which the axial load increases nonlinearly with depth. The soil response is represented by the Winkler medium whose coefficient of subgrade modulus increases linearly with depth. The governing equations for the drain-soil system are derived and solved as an eigenvalue problem. The critical buckling loads and the shape of the drain are obtained as functions of the normalized subgrade modulus of the soil at the top, the parameters signifying the variation of axial load along the length of the drain and the increase of subgrade modulus with depth. The derived deformed shapes of the drain are consistent with the observed ones.
Free vibration of symmetric angle-ply layered conical shell frusta of variable thickness is analyzed under shear deformation theory with different boundary conditions by applying collocation with spline approximation. Linear and exponential variation in thickness of layers are assumed in axial direction. Displacements and rotational functions are approximated by Bickley-type splines of order three and obtained a generalized eigenvalue problem. This problem is solved numerically for an eigenfrequency parameter and an associated eigenvector of spline coefficients. The vibration of three and five-layered conical shells, made up of two different type of materials are considered. Parametric studies are made for analysing the frequencies of the shell with respect to the coefficients of thickness variations, length-to-radius ratio, length-to-thickness ratio and ply angles with different combination of the materials. The results are compared with the available data and new results are presented in terms of tables and graphs.
We reconstruct the assembly pinwise flux using several types of boundary conditions and confirm that the reconstructed fluxes are the same with the reference flux if the boundary condition is exact. We test EPRI-9R benchmark problem with four boundary conditions, such as Dirichlet boundary condition, Neumann boundary condition, homogeneous mixed boundary condition (albedo type), and inhomogeneous mixed boundary condition. We also test reconstruction of the pinwise flux from nodal values, specifically from the AFEN [1, 2] results. From the nodal flux distribution we obtain surface flux and surface current distributions, which can be used to construct various types of boundary conditions. The result show that the Neumann boundary condition cannot be used for iterative schemes because of its ill-conditioning problem and that the other three boundary conditions give similar accuracy. The Dirichlet boundary condition requires the shortest computing time. The inhomogeneous mixed boundary condition requires only slightly longer computing time than the Dirichlet boundary condition, so that it could also be an alternative. In contrast to the fixed-source type problem resulting from the Dirichlet, Neumann, inhomogeneous mixed boundary conditions, the homogeneous mixed boundary condition constitutes an eigenvalue problem and requires longest computing time among the three (Dirichlet, inhomogeneous mixed, homogeneous mixed) boundary condition problems.
In this study, free vibration analysis of Reissner plates on Pasternak foundation is carried out by mixed finite element method based on the G$\hat{a}$teaux differential. New boundary conditions are established for plates on Pasternak foundation. This method is developed and applied to numerous problems by Ak$\ddot{o}$z and his co-workers. In dynamic analysis, the problem reduces to the solution of a standard eigenvalue problem and the mixed element is based upon a consistent mass matrix formulation. The element has four nodes and bending and torsional moments, transverse shear forces, rotations and displacements are the basic unknowns. The element performance is assessed by comparison with numerical examples known from literature. Validity limits of Kirchhoff plate theory is tested by dynamic analysis. Shear locking effects are tested as far as $h/2a=10^{-6}$ and it is observed that REC32 is free from shear locking.

This paper is concerned with the vibration analysis of a rectangular plate with multiple circular holes. On the contrary to the case of rectangular plate with multiple rectangular holes, it is very difficult to perform qualitative analysis on natural vibration characteristics because of geometrical inconsistency. In this paper, we applied the Independent Coordinate Coupling Method(ICCM) to the addressed problem, which was developed to compute natural vibration characteristics of the rectangular plate with a circular hole and proven to be computationally effective. The ICCM is based on Rayleigh-Ritz method but utilizes independent coordinates for each hole domain. By matching the deflection conditions for each hole imposed on the expressions, we can easily derive the reduced mass and stiffness matrices. The resulting equation is then used for the calculation of the eigenvalue problem. The numerical results show the efficacy of the Independent Coordinate Coupling Method.

This paper is concerned with the vibration analysis of a rectangular plate with a rectangular hole. Even though there have been many methods developed for the addressed problem, they suffer from computational time. In this paper, we developed a new methodology called Independent Coordinate Coupling Method which can couple two independent coordinate systems for the entire plate domain and the hole. By matching the deflection condition imposed on the expressions, the relationship between the global axes and the local axes is derived. This formula is then used for the calculation of the eigenvalue problem. The numerical results show the efficacy of the proposed method.

An analysis has been given for the effect of viscous dissipation on the thermal instability of plane Couette flow between two parallel plates maintained at different constant temperatures. Under the assumption that the principle of the exchange of stabilities holds, stationary disturbance quantities in the form of longitudinal vortices are considered. The magnitudes of disturbance quantities are then represented as fast convergent power series so that the eigenvalue problem for determining the onset conditions of the thermal instability may be reduced to a simplified problem of finding the roots of a $4{\times}4$ determinant. It is shown that as the magnitude of the visucous dissipation increases the flow becomes more susceptible to instabilities, which is in very good agreement with previous results obtained in some related researches.
Integrated finite difference method (IFDM) is used to solve one dimensional free oscillation problem in the coastal area. To evaluate the solution accuracy of IFDM in free oscillation analysis, two finite difference equations based on area discretization method and point discretization method are derived from the governing equations of free oscillation, respectively. The difference equations are transformed into a generalized eigenvalue problem, respectively. A numerical example is presented, for which the analytical solution is available, for comparing IFDM to conventional finite difference equation (CFDM), qualitatively. The eigenvalue matrices are solved by sub-space iteration method. The numerical results of the two methods are in good agreement with analytical ones, however, IFDM yields better solution than CFDM in lower modes because IFDM only includes first order differential operator in finite difference equation by Green's theorem. From these results, it is concluded that IFDM is useful for the free oscillation analysis in the coastal area.

Identification of communication channels is a problem of important current theoretical and practical concerns. Recently proposed solutions for this problem exploit the diversity induced by antenna array or time oversampling. The method resorts to an adaptive filter with a linear constraint. In this paper, an approach is proposed that is based on decomposition. Indeed, the eigenvector corresponding to the minimum eigenvalue of the covariance matrix of the received signals contains the channel impulse response. And we present an adaptive algorithm to solve this problem. Proposed technique shows the better performance than one of existing algorithms.
