  • There has been an increasingly high interest in gardens and garden design in Korea recently. However, the usage of the term 'garden' is extremely varied and complex, and there has been very little academic research made on the meaning of garden. Therefore, this research attempts to investigate the ideas of current gardens and to elucidate their changing patterns by means of extensive literature research and big data analysis. The notion of garden in the past was broad including not only private space such as Madang(마당) and Teul(뜰), but also even field and grass land as public outdoor space. Yet, the meaning has become smaller to merely private space due to the change of dwelling systems due to high industrial development of the 20th century. Furthermore, the introduction of urban parks as an interactive space between nature and humans, the similar spatial function of gardens, has blurred the boundary between garden and park, which created confusion in understanding the concept of a garden. After all, garden is a subject for humans. The meanings of garden need to be recognized from various points of view since garden itself is a creation by the sum of diverse fields such as natural and social sciences as well as culturology. This discussion on the meaning of garden in the present day will give a conceptual foundation for future research on gardens and garden design. Also, the big data analysis employed here as a research method can help other similar research topics, particularly semantics in landscape architecture.

  • TRIZ is a theory of inventive problem solving. Recently the importance of creative capabilities is being emphasized and many successful cases using TRIZ are being introduced, therefore interest in TRIZ has been increasing. But TRIZ is not easy to learn alone compared to other creative thinking tools. Although it is effective to learn TRIZ through various cases, it is not easy for beginners to experience those many cases. Therefore, we developed a software called Do-TRIZ for TRIZ learning. Do-TRIZ provides descriptions and various examples of key concepts to make it easier for beginners to learn TRIZ. Also, the learners can add new cases continuously on Do-TRIZ. Especially, process-based problem solving modules have been implemented on Do-TRIZ, in order to make it possible to solve problems based on technical contradiction, physical contradiction, and IFR(Ideal Final Result). The learners can use the modules to solve their problems and to share the results. Also, we implemented Do-TRIZ Memo app that works with Do-TRIZ.

  • While strong investments on startup and venture ecosystem prosper worldwide, growing interest on nurturing startup ecosystem in Korea is also on its way. However, korean entrepreneurial ecosystem currently results few successful business models with those continuous development of itself compared to the one in China, which is breeding more than 50% of unicorns internationally. Accordingly, this study examined how people in the venture ecosystem, especially in IT industry feel about themselves and startup itself and compared startup ecosystem in Seoul, Korea to the one in Chengdu, China considering each of economic, social and administrational environment. The study tried to provide an implication about the future orientation of Korea's starup and venture ecosystem to policy makers and the ones inside the environment to make a better one. Therefore, the study choose Seoul, Korea and Chengdu, China as geological specimens of startup ecosystem and conduct qualitative study by interviewing selected ones who work in startup incubator, accelerator specified to IT industry and started their own business in IT industry funded by startup reward program. The study categorize the result in social, economic, and administrative parts and screens whether the interviewees from both Korea and China have similar opinions toward each of questions and can be translated to have tendency or not in each part of study. According to the study, the national recognition of startup should be moved from means of maintenance such as restaurants, franchise business to IT startup especially based on software business for the sustainable flourish in Korean venture ecosystem. Investors including accelerator, Angel investors and VCs should be less risk-aversion and therefore prefer stake purchase to solely giving subsidies. The role of governors should be limited to be a middleman of the network, connecting each people in need inside the ecosystem and their reward program should focus on nurturing the growing ones, not just multiplying the numbers of startups to expand the size of entrepreneurial ecosystem. Since this study indicated that entire revision of startup ecosystem should be applied to make a better one, it could be used to design future entrepreneurial infrastructure and the ways of activating startup ecosystem elsewhere in Korea.

  • Developing Mathematical Thinking has been continually emphasized in the Korean curriculum and this emphasis has demonstrated its impact on math textbooks and classes in South Korean schools. This study intends to discover how the Developmental Mechanism of Mathematical Thinking should be reflected through School Mathematics regardless of subfields of Mathematics or its levels. Finally, this study concluded that the Developmental Mechanism of Mathematical Thinking is being reflected on School Mathematics. However, more research in certain areas needs to be done. Through analyzing textbooks, it is certain that the Developmental Mechanism of Mathematical Thinking is being reflected on School Mathematics. Moreover, it appears that students are able to develop new concepts using Developmental Mechanism of Mathematical Thinking. Mathematical Thinking is a subject that many scholars and mathematicians have taken an interest in. Especially with the math curriculum in Korea, designing and implementing classes that would help students develop their mathematical thinking are increasingly being emphasized. This study defines what mathematical development mechanism is, and based on this definition, it further analyzes the math textbook of the revised 2007 curriculum. As a result, textbook developers and math teachers should examine and analyze the concepts that learners need to acquire and how they develop. Further, this study not only presents the concepts students are expected to acquire, but also looks at the flow in which concepts have been introduced to students. It concludes that activities that can help students have an idea of what they are going to learn in the future should be provided during class time.

  • Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have generated a strong interest in the development of solid-state devices owing to their low cost and simple preparation procedures. Effort has been devoted to the study of electrolytes that allow light-to-electrical power conversion for DSSC applications. Several attempts have been made to substitute the liquid electrolyte in the original solar cells by using (2,2',7,7'-tetrakis (N,N-di-p-methoxyphenylamine)-9-9'-spirobi-fluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) that act as hole conductor [1]. Although efficiencies above 3% have been reached by several groups, here the major challenging is limited photoelectrode thickness ($2{\mu}m$), which is very low due to electron diffusion length (Ln) for spiro-OMeTAD ($4.4{\mu}m$) [2]. In principle, the $TiO_2$ layer can be thicker than had been thought previously. This has important implications for the design of high-efficiency solid-state DSSCs. In the present study, we have fabricated 3-D Transparent Conducting Oxide (TCO) by growing tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) nanowire (NWs) arrays via a vapor transport method [3] and mesoporous $TiO_2$ nanoparticle (NP)-based photoelectrodes were prepared using doctor blade method. Finally optimized light-harvesting solid-state DSSCs is made using 3-D TCO where electron life time is controlled the recombination rate through fast charge collection and also ITO NWs length can be controlled in the range of over $2{\mu}m$ and has been characterized using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Structural analyses by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-Ray diffraction (XRD) results reveal that the ITO NWs formed single crystal oriented [100] direction. Also to compare the charge collection properties of conventional NPs based solid-state DSSCs with ITO NWs based solid-state DSSCs, we have studied intensity modulated photovoltage spectroscopy (IMVS), intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) and transient open circuit voltages. As a result, above $4{\mu}m$ thick ITO NWs based photoelectrodes with Z907 dye shown the best performing device, exhibiting a short-circuit current density of 7.21 mA cm-2 under simulated solar emission of 100 mW cm-2 associated with an overall power conversion efficiency of 2.80 %. Finally, we achieved the efficiency of 7.5% by applying a CH3NH3PbI3 perovskite sensitizer.

  • The stereoselective synthesis of chiral terminal epoxide is of immense academic and industrial interest due to their utility as versatile starting materials as well as chiral intermediates. In this review, we investigate the research and development trend in the asymmetric ring opening reactions using cobalt salen catalysts. Hydrolytic kinetic resolution (HKR) technology is the very prominent way to prepare optically pure terminal epoxides among available methods. We have synthesized homogeneous and heterogeneous chiral dinuclear salen complexes and demonstrated their catalytic activity and selectivity for the asymmetric ring opening of terminal epoxides with variety of nucleophiles and for asymmetric cyclization to prepare optically pure terminal epoxides in one step. The resolved ring opened product combined with ring closing in the presence of base and catalyst afforded the enantioriched terminal epoxides in quantitaive yield. Potentially, these catalysts are using on an industrial scale to produce chiral intermediates. The experimental results of HKR technology applied to the synthesis of various chiral compounds are presented in this paper.

  • Ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) has attracted growing interest, as it is an effective method for the rapid extraction of bioactive compounds from plants with a high extraction efficiency comparable to the conventional extraction. In this study, UAE was used for the extraction of polyphenols from lipid extracted microalgae (Tetraselmis KCTC 12236BP) and the effects of five extraction variables on the total phenolic compounds (TPC) were studied. For the optimization of extraction parameters, particle size, solid-to-liquid (L/S) ratio, ethanol concentration, extraction temperature and extraction time have been examined as independent variables. All variables exhibited the significant effects on the extraction of TPC and extraction temperature showed the most significant effect among five variables. The optimal extraction conditions were the extraction using mixed particle, S/L ratio of 10%, ethanol concentration of 60%, extraction temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and extraction time of 30 min, which gave the 8.7 mg GAE/g DW for TPC. Compared with conventional hot-water extraction, TPC extraction under UAE was increased by up to 1.8 fold with same extraction condition. This study showed that UAE under low temperature and short extraction time was proven to be an effective extraction process for TPC production from LEA compared to conventional hot-water extraction process.
