  • Yellow sea bream contains comparatively larger amount of fat among white muscle fishes, so that rancidity might easily occur during drying and storage. For the purpose of the protection of rancidity, the effect of some antioxidants was studied when yellow sea bream was sun-dried after dipping in the solutions and packed in PVC film$0.3mm\times12cm\times30cm $ for storage at room temperature. The inhibitory effect of additives was in order of Tenox-II, BHA, Sustane and NDGA, while EDTA, potassium sorbate, CTC and $\alpha-naphthylamine$ were ineffective. The results suggest that the treatment of $0.1\%$ Tenox-II solution and packing in PVC film is better condition to improve the quality of product and during drying and storage.

  • This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of mulching materials on root growth characteristics and weed occurrence of Platycodon grandiflorum transplants (3 years old) in organic farming. After transplanting, roots were mulched with one of three mulching materials (biodegradable film, sawdust, or rice husks) or a control (no mulching). The average root diameter of all mulching groups was 28.1 mm, which was 5.1 mm thicker than the no-mulching treatment. Roots with the biodegradable film treatment were the thickest at 30.9 mm. Root length was the shortest, 22.0 cm, with rice husk mulching. The number of rootlets was the highest with film mulching (36.0 rootlets/root) and the lowest with no mulching. For root fresh weight, which directly affects yield, the average of treated and untreated roots was 100 and 56 g/root, respectively. The highest fresh weight was in the biodegradable film plot (130 g/root). The mulching treatment groups showed a weed inhibition effect compared with the no-mulching treatment. The dominant weeds with the no-mulching treatment were Setaria viridis and Digitaria ciliaris, and that with the mulching treatment was Setaria viridis. Average annual weed occurrence across all treatments was 72%. Weed occurrence was the highest with the no-mulching treatment ($125weeds/m^2$), and there were no weeds with the biodegradable film treatment.

  • To investigate the effect of grapefruit seed extract pretreatment and packaging materials on the quality of dried persimmon, dried persimmons were stored for $60{\sim}100$ days at room temperature $(15^{\circ}C)$ after dipping in grapefruit seed extract and then packing with LDPE (low density polyethylene) film and Nylon/LDPE film pouch $(30{\times}30cm^2)$. Weight loss of dried persimmon packaged with Nylon/LDPE film was not exceeded 86% of control. 60% mold occurrence and 50% browness were observed compared to control. There were no significant differences in the firmness, soluble solid content and color between grapefruit seed extract pretreatment and control. Grapefruit seed extracts pretreatment had an effect on the inhibition of color change in Hunters value.

  • Plasma polymerized organic thin films were deposited on Si(100) glass and Copper substrates at 25 ∼ 100 $^{\circ}C$ using cyclohexane and ethylcyclohexane precursors by PECVD method. In order to compare physical and electrochemical properties of the as-grown thin films, the effects of the RF plasma power in the range of 20∼50 W and deposition temperature on both corrosion protection efficiency and physical properties were studied. We found that the corrosion protection efficiency (P$\_$k/), which is one of the important factors for corrosion protection in the interlayer dielectrics of microelectronic devices application, was increased with increasing RF power. The highest P$\_$k/ value of plasma polymerized ethylcyclohexane film (92.1% at 50 W) was higher than that of the plasma polymerized cyclohexane film (85.26% at 50 W), indicating inhibition of oxygen reduction. Impedance analyzer was utilized for the determination of I-V curve for leakage current density and C-V for dielectric constants. To obtain C-V curve, we used a MIM structure of metal(Al)-insulator(plasma polymerized thin film)-metal(Pt) structure. Al as the electrode was evaporated on the ethylcyclohexane films that grew on Pt coated silicon substrates, and the dielectric constants of the as-grown films were then calculated from C-V data measured at 1㎒. From the electrical property measurements such as I-V ana C-V characteristics, the minimum dielectric constant and the best leakage current of ethylcyclohexane thin films were obtained to be about 3.11 and 5 ${\times}$ 10$\^$-12/ A/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and cyclohexane thin films were obtained to be about 2.3 and 8 ${\times}$ 10$\^$-12/ A/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

  • The blue-light effect on the grown as well as on the physiological activity of some major horticultural plants in Korea has been investigated. The light quality used for the work was obtained from sunlight filtered by an orangecolored polyethylene film which removed about 70% of visible light in the spectral region of $350㎚{\sim}500㎚$. The film was developed in this laboratory especially for the work and named BCR film meaning blue color-removing film. The light environment in the plastic house which was built with BCR film provided plants with the blue color-deficient sunlight. Thus, the photobiological effect of blue light could be examined conversely by comparing with the effect of white sunlight in a conventional plastic house built with colorless polyethylene film. In a sense of applicability to horticulture, two remarkable effects of the blue color-deficient sunlight on plant physiology were observed: First, it enhanced to a great extent the growth activity of plants-pepper, cucumber, zucchini, tomato, and leaf lettuce at the vegetative stage as well as at the reproductive stage, as demonstrated by their yield which were in average $40{\sim}50%$ increased compared with the control (under white sunlight). Second, it improved significantly the cold tolerance of plants, as exhibited with their resistance to chilling during treatment in a cold chamber maintained at a temperature which caused chilling injury to the plants of control. The visualized effects were reflected on the physiological activity of cells on organelle level. Chloroplast isolated from the plant leaves grown under BCR film showed considerably stronger photosynthetic activity, as judged by the increased electron transport rate of illuminated chloroplast, than that from leaves grown under white PE film. Mitochondria from leaves grown under BCR film maintained normal respiration activity until temperature decreased to a few degree($^{\circ}C$) lower than the temperature which caused respiratory inhibition to mitochondria obtained from leaves of the control.

  • Recently, requirement for the ultra thin copper foil increases with smaller and miniaturized electronic components. In this study, we evaluated the surface morphology, crystal phase ana surface roughness of the copper film electrodeposited by pulse method without using additives. Homogeneous and dense copper crystals were formed on the titanium substrate, and the optimum condition was 25% duty cycle. Moreover, the surface roughness(Ra), $0.295{\mu}m$, is the smallest value in this condition. It is thought that this copper foil is good for electromigration inhibition due to the preferential crystal growth of Cu (111)

  • Currently, most of the chlorine dioxide gas is processed at the beginning of storage or distribution. It has the disadvantage of not being able to continuously process gas since there is no system that can continuously process it during the distribution process. Therefore, in order to minimize changes in freshness and quality during the distribution process of agrifood, there is a need for a sustained-release chlorine dioxide gas treatment technology that can be continuously released. Therefore, in this study, the film to be used was examined so that the chlorine dioxide gas can be continuously released for a certain period of time, the concentration of the reactant and the viscosity at the time of the reaction were determined, and a chlorine dioxide gas gel pack was manufactured using this optimal condition. In addition, the gel pack was used to measure the amount of chlorine dioxide gas released and the sterilization effect of food poisoning bacteria.

  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of iron-nickel oxide ($Fe_2O_3$.NiO) nanopowder (FeNi) as an anti-corrosion pigment for a different application. The corrosion protection ability and the mechanism involved was determined using aqueous solution of FeNi prepared in a corrosive solution containing 3.5 wt.% NaCl. Anti-corrosion abilities of aqueous solution were determined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) on line pipe steel (API 5L X-80). The protection mechanism involved the adsorption of metallic cations on the steel surface forming a protective film. Analysis of EIS spectra revealed that corrosion inhibition occurred at low concentration, whereas higher concentration of aqueous solution produced induction behavior.

  • Silk fibroin films incorporated with tetracycline was prepared and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer and differential scanning calorimeter and examined antibacterial effect. The conformation of silk fibroin was changed from random coil to $\hat{a}$ sheet structure with incorporation of tetracycline. Antibacterial activity of the materials was evaluated against Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus epidermis, and Staphylococcus aures) using agar plate method showing clear inhibition zone around tetracycline silk film. It is concluded that tetracycline-incorporated SF films are highly effective against bacteria.
