BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Hypertension is the major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, a leading cause of deaths in Korea. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of a nutrition education in reducing sodium intake and increasing potassium intake in hypertensive adults. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Subjects who participated in this study were 88 adults (28 males and 60 females) who were pre-hypertension or untreated hypertensive patients aged ≥ 30 yrs in Gyeonggi Province, Korea. These subjects were divided into 2 groups: a lowsodium education (LS) group and a low-sodium high-potassium education (LSHP) group. Nutrition education of 3 sessions for 12 weeks was conducted. Blood pressure, blood and urine components, nutrient intake, and dietary behavior were compared between the two education groups. RESULT: Blood pressure was decreased in both groups after the nutrition education (P < 0.05). In the LSHP group, levels of blood glucose (P < 0.05), total cholesterol (P < 0.01), and lowdensity lipoprotein-cholesterol (P < 0.05) were decreased after the program completion. Sodium intake was decreased in both groups after the nutrition education (P < 0.05). However, Na/K ratio was only decreased in the LS group (P < 0.05). Intake frequency of fish & shellfish was only significantly reduced in the LS group (P < 0.05), while intake frequencies of cooked rice, noodles & dumplings, breads & snacks, stew, kimchi, and fish & shellfish were reduced in the LSHP group (P < 0.05). Total score of dietary behavior appeared to be effectively decreased in both groups after the education program (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This education for reducing sodium intake was effective in reducing blood pressure and sodium intake. The education for enhancing potassium intake resulted in positive changes in blood glucose and serum cholesterol levels.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the components for the improvement of outdoor spaces in farmyards and to suggest guidelines for the planning of these spaces. The objects of this study were the general farmyards located around farmhouses which had government support for the construction of on-site gardens. The results were as follows: 1. Although over 50% of the general farmyards did not have gardens, most gardens of farmyards (90% and over) featured trees and/or flowers. This demonstrated that the residents of the farmyards thought positively about green spaces. 2. With the establishment of a garden, the self-image of the household improved along with the physical environment. Thus, the construction of the garden brought about psychologically and physically positive results. 3. Regarding the degree of satisfaction with green space and shade, the rate of farmyards with gardens was higher than those without. With more government support for developing such green spaces, satisfaction with them could increase. The same result was obtained regarding the degree of satisfaction towards visual harmony with nearby farmyards, indicating that neighboring farm households want to have positive relationships with one another. 4. The frequency of use of living space increased through the construction of gardens in farmyards, in spite of decreased working space. %is aspect could be used as data in the planning of gardens in farmyards. 5. The perceived necessity of gardens in the general farmyards and desire to construct new gardens rose. This preference was high in gardens with abundant greenery and a lot of rest facilities. This study suggests those reasons result from a poor farm economy. With government support, general farmyards without gardens could construct gardens. And we might infer that the residents' desire to construct a garden in general famyards had been influenced by a neighbor with a garden.
Fast food is popular among children and adolescents; however, its consumption has often been associated with negative impacts on nutrition and health. This study examined current fast food consumption status among middle school students and explored factors influencing fast food consumption by applying Theory of Planned Behavior. A total of 354 (52.5% boys) students were recruited from a middle school. The subjects completed a pre-tested questionnaire. The average monthly frequency of fast food consumption was 4.05 (4.25 for boys, 3.83 for girls). As expected, fast food consumption was considered to be a special event rather than part of an everyday diet, closely associated with meeting friends or celebrating, most likely with friends, special days. The Theory of Planned Behavior effectively explained fast food consumption behaviors with relatively high $R^2$ around 0.6. Multiple regression analyses showed that fast food consumption behavior was significantly related to behavioral intention (b = 0.61, P < 0.001) and perceived behavioral control (b = 0.19, P < 0.001). Further analysis showed that behavioral intention was significantly related to subjective norm (b = 0.15, P < 0.01) and perceived behavioral control (b = 0.56, P < 0.001). Attitude toward fast food consumption was not significantly associated with behavioral intention. Therefore, effective nutrition education programs on fast food consumption should include components to change the subjective norms of fast food consumption, especially among peers, and perceived behavioral control. Further studies should examine effective ways of changing subjective norms and possible alternatives to fast food consumption for students to alter perceived behavioral control.

We performed this study to determine the effect of Korean favorite teas (green tea, ginseng tea, coffee and barley tea) on jejunal crypt survival, endogenous spleen colony formation and apoptosis in jejunal crypt cells of mice irradiated with high and low dose of ${\gamma}$-radiation. Jejunal crypts were protected by pretreatment of green tea (P.O.: 1.25% water extract, for 7 days before irradiation., I.P.: 50 mg/kg of body weight, at 12 and 36 hours before irradiation, p<0.01) or ginseng (I.P.: 50 mg/kg of body weight, at 12 and 36 hours before irradiation, p<0.05). Green tea (p<0.05) or ginseng (p<0.05) administration before irradiation (I.P. at 12 and 36 hours before irradiation) resulted in an increase of t formation of endogenous spleen colony. The frequency of radiation-induced apoptosis was also reduced by pretreatment of green tea (P.O.: p<0.005, I.P.: p<0.05), pretreatment of ginseng (P.O.: p<0.005, I.P.: p<0.005) or posttreatment of ginseng (I.P.: 50 mg/kg of body weight, at 30 minutes after irradiation, p<0.05). Treatment with coffee or barley tea showed no significant modifying effects on the radiation-induced damages. These results indicated that green tea and ginseng might be a useful radioprotector, especially since it is a relatively nontoxic natural product. Further studies are needed to characterize better the promotion nature of green tea, ginseng and its components.
This study was performed to determine the effect of Phyllostachys nigra var. henenis Strapf leaf extract on jejunal crypt survival, endogenous spleen colony formation and apoptosis in jejunal crypt cells of mice irradiated with high and low dose of gamma-radiation. Phyllostachys nigra var. henenis Strapf administration before irradiation (I.P.: 125 mg/kg of body weight, at 24 hours before irradiation) resulted in an increase of the formation of endogenous spleen colony (p<0.01). The frequency of radiation-induced apoptosis was also reduced by pretreatment of Phyllostachys nigra var. henenis Strapf (I.P.: 280 mg/kg or 28 mg/kg of body weight, at 24 hours before irradiation, p<0.01). These results indicated that Phyllostachys nigra var. henenis Strapf might be a useful radioprotector, especially since it is a relatively nontoxic natural product. Further studies are needed to characterize better the promotion nature of Phyllostachys nigra var. henenis Strapf and its components.
The chemical structures of perfluorinated compounds(PFCs) have unique properties such as thermal and chemical stability that make them useful components in a wide variety of consumer and industrial products. Two of these PFCs, perfluorooctane sulfonate(PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA), have received attention and were the most commonly detected. In this study it was analyzed the concentrations of 8 PFCs in samples were collected from drinking water treatment plants for 5 years(2012-2016). PFOS and PFOA were also high concentration and frequency. The mean concentrations of PFOA and PFOS were detected $0.0026-0.0069{\mu}g/L$ and $0.0009-0.0024{\mu}g/L$ in samples from drinking water treatment plants. These were relatively lower or similar compared to PFOS concentrations in Osaka(Japan). In general, these levels are below health-based values set by international authoritative bodies for drinking water. These results will be serve as the first monitoring data for PFCs in drinking water and be useful for characterizing the concentration distribution and management of PFCs in future studies.

If typical contrast enhancement algorithms for natural images are applied to X-ray images, they may cause artifacts such as overshooting or produce unnatural visual quality because they do not consider inherent characteristics of X-ray images. In order to overcome such problems, we propose a locally adaptive block-based contrast enhancement algorithm for X-ray images. After we derive a weighted cumulative distribution function for each block, we apply it to each block for contrast enhancement. Then, we obtain images that are removed from block effect by adopting block-based overlapping. In post-processing, we obtain the final image by emphasizing high frequency components. Experimental results show that the proposed block-based contrast enhancement algorithm provides at maximum 5-times higher visual quality than the exiting algorithm in terms of quantitative contrast metric.

This paper presents a 14-band LO generator architecture for MB-OFDM UWB systems using 3.1 GHz~10.6 GHz frequency band. The proposed LO generator architecture has been consisted of only one PLL and the fewest nonlinear components to generate 14 LO signals with high purity while consuming low dc power consumption. In addition, major spurious generated from the LO generator have been located in the out of UWB band. The proposed LO generator has been implemented in a $0.13-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology and consumes a dc power consumption of 93~103 mW from a 1.5 V supply. The simulation results show an in-band spurious suppression ratio of more than 41 dBc and a band-switching time of below 3 nsec.
The structure and environments of the molecular clouds near the SNR $HB3(G132.7\pm1.3)$ are studied. The molecular complex which is located at the southern rim of HB3 was proposed by former investigators as the one interacting with HB3. This complex region of $2^{\circ}\times2^{\circ}\;at\;l=133^{\circ}$ has been observed at $^{12}CO,\;^{13}CO,\;J=1-0\;at\;a\;1'$, resolution with the 14-m radio telescope at Taeduk Radio Astronomy Observatory. We have reached to the following four conclusions. The possibility that these molecular complex and HB3 are interacting with each other cannot be supported with any of our data. The morphologies of the two show no similarities. Neither particular features for the interaction are found in the CO lines. The hypothetical 'Molecular wall' which was expected to exist on the northwestern rim of HB3 as a cause for the noncircular morphology of HB3 is turned out to be nonexistent in CO. The molecular complex which resembles a 'bar' at a low resolution is now resolved into a U-shaped shell. It seems that the U-shape is consist of two independent components. No peculiarities, such as unseen masses or bright stars capable of forming HlI regions, are found within the U-shape region. The total mass included in the complex is estimated to be $M_{total}\;=\;2.9\~8.4\times10^5\;M_\bigodot$, which is in good agreement with previous observations within errors. Considering about 12 clumps distinguishable within the complex, the total mass implies that masses of each of clumps are on the order of $10^4\;M_\bigodot$, which makes these good objects for further studies in relation to star-formation. Especially the clumps associated with W3 are worthy for more high resolution observations for better understanding of astrophysical phenomenon ongoing in them.

We propose a retouching method that converts a photography taken by smartphone to a watercolor painting image using bilateral filtering and mean shift segmentation which are mostly used in image processing. The first step is to convert an input image to fit the screen resolution of smartphone. And next step is to weaken high frequency components of the image, while preserving the edge of image using the bilateral filtering. And after that we perform mean shift segmentation from the bilateral filtered image. We apply parameters of mean shift segmentation considering the processing speed of smartphone. Experimental result shows that our method can be applied to various types of image and bring better result.
