• Aldose reductase (AR) is the key enzyme of the polyol pathway in the development of the diabetic complications. Sixty seven Chinese herbal medicines have been investigated for inhibitory activities on AR. Among them, 7 herbal medicines, Buddleja crispa (twigs and leaves), Taiwania flousiana (twigs and leaves), Sloanea hemsleyana (fruits), Euphorbia nemetocypha (whole plants), Photinia glomerata (twigs and leaves), Vitex yunnanensis (twigs and leaves) exhibited a significant inhibitory activity against AR. Particularly, S. hemsleyana and V. yunnanensis showed 1.2-4.5 times more potent inhibitory activity than the positive control, 3,3-tetramethyleneglutaric acid (TMG).

 • Objectives:In this study, we surveyed papers about Oriental herbal medicines(prescriptions and herbs) for dementia. Method:We collected 64 research papers on Oriental herbal medicines(prescriptions and herbs) for dementia in the internet site OASIS using the keyword dementia. Then we analysed them according to year, research method, etc. Result & Conclusion:The absolute majority of research papers on Oriental herbal medicines(prescriptions and herbs) for dementia was experimental papers. And there were not enough clinical papers. In the future, we have to perform more studies such as RCT(Randomized Controlled Trial) and research papers on combined medication of the oriental and the western medicines for dementia.

 • Objectives : The internet is the most common method to investigate information. It is showed that 75.2% of Internet users of 20s had health information search experience. So this study is aim to understanding of interest of public about the herbal medicine using internet search query volume data. Methods : The Naver that is the top internet portal web service of the Republic of Korea has provided an Internet search query volume data from January 2007 to the current through the Naver data lab (http://datalab.naver.com) service. We have collected search query volume data which was provided by the Naver in 606 herbal medicine names and sorted the data by peak and total search volume. Results : The most frequently searched herbal medicines which has less bias and sorted by peak search volume is 'wasong (와송)'. And the most frequently searched herbal medicines which has less bias and sorted by total search volume is 'hasuo (하수오)'.Conclustions : This study is showed that the rank of interest of public about herbal medicines. Among the above herbal medicines, some herbal medicines had supply issue. And there are some other herbal medicines that had very little demand in Korean medicine market, but highly interested public. So it is necessary to monitor for these herbal medicines which is highly interested of the public. • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to apply informations related to herbal medicines to IDMP (Identification of Medicinal Products), an ISO standards related to medicinal products substances, for systematic collection of data through the integration of informations on distribution, manufacturing, and management of herbal medicines. Methods : By analyzing ISO 11238 and ISO/TS 19844, elements that can be used in the information model of herbal medicine were derived from the identification of medicinal products information model on substances. The labeling specified in the safety and quality control regulations for herbal medicines was mapped to the IDMP information model, and ginseng was applied as an example. Results : Herbal medicine corresponded to substance in IDMP. Among the five types of substances specified by IDMP, herbal medicines were expressed as structurally diverse. Scientific name was used as an invariant property of herbal medicine, and the substance level included information about source material and modification, and specifically included information about the scientific name, medicinal part, fraction, and processing. In addition, the specified substance level had information on the constituents, characteristic attributes, manufacturing, and grade of the herbal medicine. Conclusions : It is necessary to establish a code system for identifying herbal medicines. In order to apply the IDMP standards, research on the development of standard terms is required to express the characteristics of herbal medicines. In addition, information for identification of herbal medicines is also required, and information from production to consumption should be systematically accumulated and managed for actual application.

 • Aldose reductase (AR) has been shown to play an important role in the development of the diabetic complications. To discover novel treatments for diabetic complications from natural sources, 59 Chinese herbal medicines have been investigated for inhibitory activities on AR. Among them, 10 herbal medicines, Catalpa fargesii (stem and leaf), Saussurea Laniceps(whole plant), Alnus nepalensis(stem and leaf), Swertia macrosperma (whole plant), Woodfordia fruticosa (stem and leaf), Elsholtzia bodinieri (whole plant), Elsholtzia fruticosa (whole plant), Rosa multiflora (fruit), Nardostachys chinensis (whole plant), Eurya groffii (stem and leaf) exhibited a significant inhibitory activity compared with 3,3-tetramethyleneglutaric acid (TMG) as positive control. Particularly, 4 herbal medicines, C. fargesii (stem and leaf), S. Laniceps (whole plant), A. nepalensis (stem and leaf), S. macrosperma (whole plant) showed two times more potent inhibitory activity than TMG ($5.37{\mu}g/ml$).

 • Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) contribute to the progression of micro and macrovsacular complication of diabetes and therefore present a promising target for therapeutic agents. In this study, 40 Korean herbal medicines have been investigated with an in vitro evaluation system using AGEs inhibitory activity. Of these, 21 herbal medicines $(IC_{50}<50{\mu}g/ml)$ exhibited an inhibitory activity against AGEs formation compared with anminoguanidine $(IC_{50}=72.12{\mu}g/ml)$. Particularly, 7 herbal medicines, Actinidia arguta (root and stem), Crataegus pinnatifida (twig), Camellia japonica (whole), Kalopanax pictus (bark), Lagerstroemia indica (leaf-stem), Reynoutria sachalinensis (root) showed more potent inhibitory activity (approximately 3-10 fold) than the positive control aminoguanidine.

 • In this study, 64 Korean herbal medicines have been investigated with an in vitro evaluation systems using glycation end products (AGEs) formation inhibitory activity. Of these, 30 herbal medicines ($IC_{50}<50{\mu}g/ml$) were found to have significant AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Of these, four herbal medicines ($IC_{50}<5{\mu}g/ml$) were found to have significant AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Particularly, Cornus controversa (branches and leaves), Acer ginnala (stems and leaves), Platycarya strobilacea (flowers) and Picrasma quassioides (stems), showed more potent inhibitory activity (approximately 17-27 fold) than the positive control aminoguanidine ($IC_{50}=77.04{\mu}g/ml$).

 • Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have been postulated to play a central role in the development of diabetic complications. A variety of different agents that inhibit AGEs have been under investigation. In this study, 54 herbal medicines from China have been investigated with an in vitro evaluation system using AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Of these, 6 herbal medicines ($IC_{50}<5{\mu}g/ml$) were found to have significant AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Particularly, herbal medicines Punica granatum (peels), Terminalia chebula (fruits), Rheum palmatum (roots), Oxyria digyna (stems and leaves), Anisodus luridus (roots) and Quercus schottkyana(stems and leaves) showed more potent inhibitory activity (approximately 9-43 fold) than the positive control aminoguanidine ($IC_{50}=77.04{\mu}g/ml$).
