  • The urban is possessing of various landuses such as commercial, industrial, residential and official areas. All of these landuses is including the paved areas that are roads and parking lots. The NPS (nonpoint sources) pollutants are generally originated from pavement areas in urban by human activities. Especially the roads are stormwater intensive landuses because of high vehicle activities and high imperviousness. The main NPS pollutants from roads are particulates and metals from vehicles and pavements. The Korea MOE (Ministry of Environment) is developing the NPS control program to reduce the NPS pollutants from the basins. However, it is not easy to control the NPS because it has high uncertainty by characteristics of rainfalls and watersheds. Therefore, this research was conducted on characterizing the runoff and providing mean EMC from roads. The monitoring were performed for total 16 rainfall events from a road in Youngin City since 2006. The results show that the TSS is highly correlated with other pollutant parameters. The statistical regression models using TSS EMC have been developed to easily determine the EMC of other pollutant parameters.

  • This study aims at making a HACCP(Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point)plan to be applied to soybean curd and verifing its effectiveness. First, we develped a general model of HACCP according to the guidelines of Codex (FAO/WHO). And we applied the model to 4 soybean curd workshops for 3 months. The HACCP model is composed of these procedures; HACCP team organization, production description, work flow chart, hazatd analysis, CCP (critical control point) decision, CL (critical limit) establishment, monitoring method decision, correction, verification and documentation. CCP were selection procedure and refrigeration procedure in non-wrapped soybean curd. CCP were selection procedure, heat-sterilizing and refrigeration in wrapped soybean curd. The result of bacterial experiment after apling the model for 3 months, the bacterial numbers of soybean curd box, wrapper, and soybean curd production were lower after appling than before appling, the model. We could verify that the appications of the HACCP model were effective to the soybean curd workshops.

  • The monitoring of pesticide residues was performed on 33 fruit commodities collected in Gyeonggi-do, Korea from 2006 to 2010. Pesticide residues were detected in 431 samples (16.8%) of total 2,558 samples and violated in 12 samples (0.5%). Annual detection rate showed 6.9%~19.4% with the rate of violation of 0.3%~0.9%. Twenty three samples (69.7%) of 33 commodities were detected and 4 samples (12.1%) were violated. Eight pesticides (EPN, dicofol, carbaryl, procymidone, methidathion, prothiofos, fenitrothion and phenthoate) were violated and 62 pesticides were detected. Chloropyrifos was detected most frequently. The rate of detection and violation of citrus fruits in fruits showed the highest level. Organophosphorus pesticides (35%) and insecticide (57%) were detected most frequently. The hazard index (%ADI) of chronic dietary risk assessment by deterministic approach showed that the lower limit value and upper limit value for the whole population were 0.0000~0.7526 and 0.0000~1.3237 respectively. For the only consumer group, the lower limit value and upper limit value were 0.0006~9.7801 and 0.0058~15.9258 respectively. Therefore the hazard index for the whole population and the only consumer group were evaluated as a safe level.

  • With the aim to develop the monitoring technology on background atmosphere and climate change over Korean Peninsula, observations and studies on chemical, physical and optical properties of the atmospheric aerosols are made. Aerosol number concentration are measured with Optical Particle Counter from 2001 to 2003 at Gosan for 8 size intervals from 0.3 to $25{\mu}m$ diameter range. For the seasonal variation, the number concentration of coarse particles in spring at Gosan was higher than other seasons due to the influence of sand storm in spring. There is no significant correlations between fine particles ($0.3{\sim}0.5{\mu}m$) and meteorological parameters, such as relative humidity, wind speed and visual range, while the correlation between the number concentration of small particles ($0.5{\sim}2.23{\mu}m$) and relative humidity showed a positive value. This trend was inversed for the case of wind speed: aerosol number concentration showed a small decreasing tendency with increasing wind speed for small particles but the high wind speed in winter season increased coarse particle concentration. Finally, Particles most efficient in light extinction were found to be at the size of about $0.5{\sim}1{\mu}m$.

  • Background: This paper deals with the study of natural radioactivity in rocks from Ogun State in Southwestern Nigeria. The aim is to determine radiation emissions from rocks in order to estimate radiation hazard indices. Objectives: The following objectives were targeted: 1. To determine radiation emissions from each type of rocks; 2. To estimate radiation hazard indices based on the rocks; 3. To correlate the activity concentrations of radionuclides with major oxides. Methods: The samples were analyzed using a NaI (Tl) gamma ray spectrometric detector and PerkinElmer AAnalyst 400 AAS spectrometer. Results: The activity of 40K, 226Ra, and 232Th were found in order of decreasing magnitude from pegmatite>granite>migmatite. In contrast, lower concentrations were found in shale, phosphate, clay stone, sandstone and limestone. The mean absorbed doses were 125±23 nGyh-1 (migmatite), 74±13 nGy/h (granite), 72±13 nGyh-1 (pegmatite), 64±09 nGyh-1 (quartzite), 45±16 nGyh-1 (shale), 41±09 nGyh-1 (limestone), 41±11 nGyh-1 (clay stone), 24±03 nGyh-1 (phosphate), and 21±10 nGyh-1 (sandstone). The outdoor effective dose rates in all rock samples were slightly higher than the world average dose value of 0.34 mSvy-1. The percentage composition of SiO2 in the rock samples was above 50 wt% except for in the limestone, shale and phosphate. Al2O3 ranged from 4.10~21.24 wt%, Fe2O3 from 0.39~7.5 wt%, and CaO from 0.09-46.6 wt%. In addition, Na2O and K2O were present in at least 5 wt%. Other major oxides, including TiO2, P2O5, K2O, MnO, MgO and Na2O were depleted. Conclusions: The findings suggest that Ogun State may be described as a region with elevated background radiation. It is recommended that houses should be constructed with good cross ventilation and residences should use home radiation monitoring instruments to monitor radon emanating from walls.

  • The Korean peninsula is located at the edge of the East Asian active margin. The seismic activity in the Korean Peninsula is relatively low compared with the neighboring countries China and Japan. According to the available Seismic information, the Korean Peninsula is not totally safe from the Earthquake disaster. Moreover, the area is surrounded by varies tectonic forces which is resulted from the relative movements of the surrounding tectonic plates "Pacific, Philippine Sea, Eurasian and South China". Nowadays South Korea has 65 GPS stations belong to 5 governmental organizations "each organization figure out its own GPS stations for different requirements" In order to minimize the seismic hazard in the Korean Peninsula a program for monitoring the recent crustal movement has been designed considering the uses of the available GPS station "some selected stations from the previously mentioned stations" and the tectonic settings in and around the Korean Peninsula. This program is composed of two main parts, the first part to monitor the crustal deformation around the Korean Peninsula with the collaboration of the surrounding countries "China and Japan" this part is composed of two phases "East Sea Phase and Yellow Sea Phase". These phases will be helpful in determining the deformation parameters in the East Sea and the Yellow Sea respectively While the Second part of this program, is designed to determine the deformation parameters id and around the main faults in the Korean Peninsula and the relative movement between the Korean Peninsula and the Cheju Island. Through out this study the needs of crustal movement center rose up to collect the data from the previously mentioned stations and Organizations in order to use such reliable data in different geodynamical application.

  • Objectives: This study intends to evaluate the ecological risk of lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and their compounds according to the 2010 action plan on inventory and management for national priority chemicals and provide calculations of risks to the environment. By doing so, we aim to inform risk management measures for the target chemicals. Methods: We conducted species sensitivity distribution (SSD) analysis using the collected ecotoxicity data and obtained predicted no effect concentrations (PNECs) for the in-water environment using a hazardous concentration of 5% (HC5) protective of most species (95%) in the environment. Based on the calculated PNECs for aquatic organisms, PNEC values for soil and sediment were calculated using the partition coefficient. We also calculated predicted exposure concentration (PEC) from nation-wide environmental monitoring data and then the hazard quotient (HQ) was calculated using PNEC for environmental media. Results: Ecological toxicity data was categorized into five groups and five species for Pb and four groups and four species for As. Based on the HC5 values from SSD analysis, the PNEC value for aquatic organisms was calculated as 0.40 ㎍/L for Pb and 0.13 ㎍/L for As. PNEC values for soil and sediment calculated using a partition coefficient were 77.36 and 350.50 mg/kg for Pb and 24.20 and 112.75 mg/kg for As. The analysis of national environmental monitoring data showed that PEC values in water were 0.284 ㎍/L for Pb and 0.024 ㎍/L for As, while those in soil and sediment were respectively 45.9 and 44 mg/kg for Pb, and 11.40 and 19.80 mg/kg for As. Conclusions: HQs of Pb and As were 0.70 and 0.18 in water, while those in soil and sediment were 0.59 and 0.13 for Pb and 0.47 and 0.18 for As. With HQs <1 of lead and arsenic in the environment, their ecological risk levels are found to be low.

  • Jeju Island is mainly composed of basaltic lava flows and subordinate amounts of volcaniclastic sedimentary rocks. Jeju Province operates the monitoring wells for seawater intrusion problems around Jeju Island to evaluate of groundwater resources in coastal area. Various surveys and monitoring have been performed in boreholes, and also conventional geophysical well loggings conducted to identify basalt sequences and assess seawater intrusion problems. Various conventional geophysical well logs, including radioactive logs, electrical log, caliper log, and temperature and conductivity log and heat-pulse flowmeter log were obtained in 29 boreholes. The results of geophysical well loggings for saturated rocks are interesting and consistent. Natural gamma logs are useful in basalt sequences to sedimentary interbeds, unconsolidated U formation, and seoguipo formation with higher natural gamma log regardless of saturated or unsaturated basalts. Neutron logs are very effective to discriminate among individual lava flows, flow breaks, and sedimentary interbeds in saturated formation. In hyalocastite, porosity is high and resistivity is low, and we think that hyalocastite is a major pathway of fluid flow. In trachybasalt, porosity has a wide range and resistivity is high. In sedimentary interbeds, unconsolidated U formation and seoguipo formation, porosity is high and resistivity is low. The temperature logs in eastern area in Jeju are useful to interpret the hydrogeological unit and evaluate seawater intrusion in Suan area.

  • Adverse weather (e.g. strong winds, snow and ice) will probably appear as a more serious and frequent threat to road traffic than in clear climate. Another consequence of climate change with a natural disastrous on road traffic is respond to traffic accident more the large and high-rise bridge zone, tunnel zone, inclined plane zone and de-icing zone than any other zone, which in turn calls for continuous adaption of monitoring procedures. Accident mitigating measures against this accident category may consist of intense winter maintenance, the use of road weather information systems for data collection and early warnings, road surveillance and traffic control. While hazard from reduced road friction due to snow and ice may be eliminated by snow removal and de-icing measures, the effect of strong winds on road traffic are not easily avoided. The purpose of the study described here, was to design of amber information the relationship between traffic safety, weather, user information on road weather and driving conditions in local-scale Geographic. The most applications are the optimization of the amber information definition, improvements to road surveillance, road weather monitoring and improved accuracy of user information delivery. Also, statistics on wind gust, surface condition, vehicle category and other relevant parameters for wind induced accidents provide basis for traffic control, early warning policies and driver education for improved road safety at bad weather-exposed locations.
