Single and few-layer graphene nanosheets (GNs) have successfully synthesized by a modified Hummer's method followed by chemical reduction of exfoliated graphene oxide (GO) in the presence of hydrazine monohydrate. GO and GNs were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffractions (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Atomic force microscopy (AFM), Optical microscopy (OM) and by electrical conductivity measurements. The result showed that electrical conductivity of GNs was significantly improved, from $4.2{\times}10^{-4}$ S/m for GO to 12 S/m for GNs, possibly due to the removal of oxygen-containing functional group during chemical reduction. In addition, the $NO_2$ gas sensing characteristics of GNs are also discussed.

Copper oxide is a multi-functional material being used in various research areas including catalysis, electrochemical materials, oxidizing agents etc. Among these areas, we have synthesized and utilized graphene based copper oxide nanocomposites (CuOx/Graphene) for the catalytic applications (C-N cross coupling reaction). Briefly, Cu precursors were anchored on the graphite oxide(GO) sheets being exfoliated and oxidized from graphite powder. Two different crystalline structures of Cu2O and CuO on graphene and GO were prepared by annealing them in Ar and O2 environments, respectively. The morphological and electronic structures were systemically investigated using FT-IR, XRD, XPS, XAFS, and TEM. Here, we demonstrate that the catalytic performance was found to depend on oxidative states and morphological structures of CuOx graphene nanocomposites. The relationship between the structure of copper oxides and catalytic efficiency toward C-N cross coupling reaction will be discussed.
As the fossil fuels are depleted nowadays, development of alternative energies is absolutely required in the world. Efficient production of hydrogen by water-splitting using solar energy can be one of the methods to solve the global energy and environmental problems. But this method has a problem of low conversion efficiency. The application of graphene can be one method to help increase the conversion efficiency. For this reason, mass production of high quality graphene is required. In this study, we prepared graphene using the chemical exfoliation method. We applied the Hummer's method and Tour's method to oxidize the graphite and could get the different Graphene Oxide(GO) from different process conditions. We also tried to convert the GO to graphene by thermal reduction and could remove functional group of GO effectively. The control of oxidation conditions was quite important to obtain the high quality graphene.
A simple method of depositing titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) nanoparticles onto graphene oxide (GO) as a catalytic support was devised for photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB). Thiol groups were utilized as linkers to secure the $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. The resultant GO-supported $TiO_2$ (GO-$TiO_2$) sample was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements, revealing that the anatase $TiO_2$ nanoparticles had effectively anchored to the GO surface. In the photodegradation of MB, GO-$TiO_2$ exhibited remarkably enhanced photocatalytic efficiency compared with thiolated GO and pure $TiO_2$ nanoparticles. Moreover, after five-cycle photodegradation experiment, no obvious deactivation was observed. The overall results showed that thiolated GO provides a good support substrate and, thereby, enhances the photodegradation effectiveness of the composite photocatalyst.
The size and the physical properties of graphene oxide sheets were controlled by changing the oxidation temperature of graphite. Graphite oxide (GO) samples were prepared at different oxidation temperatures of $20^{\circ}C$, $27^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$ using a modified Hummers' method. The carbon-to-oxygen (C/O) ratio and the average size of the GO sheets varied according to the oxidation temperature: 1.26 and 12.4 ${\mu}m$ at $20^{\circ}C$, 1.24 and 10.5 ${\mu}m$ at $27^{\circ}C$, and 1.18 and 8.5 ${\mu}m$ at $35^{\circ}C$. This indicates that the C/O ratio and the average size of the graphene oxide sheets respectively increase as the oxidation temperature decreases. Moreover, it was observed that the surface charge and optical properties of the graphene oxide sheets could be tuned by changing the temperature. This study demonstrates the tunability of the physical properties of graphene oxide sheets and shows that the properties depend on the functional groups generated during the oxidation process.

Thermomechanical and surface chemical properties of composite films of poly(D, L-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) were significantly improved by the addition of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets as nanoscale fillers to the PLGA polymer matrix. Enhanced thermomechanical properties of the PLGA/GO (2 wt.%) composite film, including an increase in the crystallization temperature and reduction in the weight loss, were observed. The tensile modulus of a composite film with increased GO fraction was presumably enhanced due to strong chemical bonding between the GO nanosheets and PLGA matrix. Enhanced hydrophilicity of the composite film due to embedded GO nanosheets also improved the biocompatibility of the composite film. Improved thermomechanical properties and biocompatibility of the PLGA composite films embedded with GO nanosheets may be applicable to biomedical applications such as scaffolds.

SnO2 has the wide bandgap which allows it to be used as the photocatalyst. There are many studies to enhance the photocatalytic properties of SnO2. In this study, 3-dimensional SnO2 aerogel was synthesized using epoxide-initiated sol-gel method for the optimal specific surface area. Also, graphene oxide (GO) was added before the gelation process of the aerogel to maximize the specific surface area. Addition of 0.5 wt% of GO would possibly enhance the specific surface area by 1.7 times compared with the bare tin oxide aerogel. Furthermore, enhanced specific surface area could degrade 67.3% of initial Rhodamine B in 120 minutes. To compare with the bare SnO2 aerogel, 0.5 wt% GO addition to SnO2 could double the reaction rate of the photocatalytic degradation.

Composite material of the graphene ball (GB) inserted graphene oxide (GO) sheet for a supercapacitor electrode was studied. Chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process used to make GBs on the silicon oxide nanoparticles. The GBs mixed into the GO sheets to make GOGB and reduced it to create a reduced GOGB(RGOGB) composite. The RGOGB composite electrode had a large surface area and improved electrochemical properties. Specific capacitance of the RGBGO composite electrode was higher over 20 times than a pure GO and GOGB electrode in cyclic voltammetry(CV) tests, and the Z' and Z" impedance measured by an electrochemical impedance spectrometry(EIS) also low. So, the RGBGO composite electrode would use effectively to expand a performance of supercapacitor.

This study has utilized self-assembled monolayers technology to improve electrical property of graphene-oxide, which has been seperated graphine powder through a chemical exfoliation. Aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3) was applied on graphene-oxide as a reactant, and the fundamental research was carried out to apply on the self-sensing of cement-based construction structures. Electric resistance measurement result has shown that cement-composites with GO and Al-GO can be used as a conductor, electric resistance of GO and Al-GO contained composites improved by 10.2% and 15.9% respectively when compared to the standard cement-composite. Microstructure analyzation shown the formation of Al(OH)3 gel when Al-GO was added, which is speculated to result the smooth flow of current by improving the density of cement-composite. This implies that graphene-oxide has a possibility to be utilized as smart building materials and construction structure itself rather than just a structure.
The aluminum (Al)/copper oxide (CuO) complex is known as the most promising material for thermite reactions, releasing a high heat and pressure through ignition or thermal heating. To improve the reaction rate and wettability for handling safety, nanosized primary particles are applied on Al/CuO composite for energetic materials in explosives or propellants. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) is adopted for the Al/CuO composites as the functional supporting materials, preventing a phase-separation between solvent and composites, leading to a significantly enhanced reactivity. The characterizations of Al/CuO decorated on GO(Al/CuO/GO) are performed through scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy mapping analysis. Moreover, the functional bridging between Al/CuO and GO is suggested by identifying the chemical bonding with GO in X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The reactivity of Al/CuO/GO composites is evaluated by comparing the maximum pressure and rate of the pressure increase of Al/CuO and Al/CuO/GO. The composites with a specific concentration of GO (10 wt%) demonstrate a well-dispersed mixture in hexane solution without phase separation.
